This is the thread to talk about the new New York Dolls album! Yay!

I've only heard it once this morning, so I can't say too much about it except that it's certainly not a disaster like some people worry about.

The best song for me is "Plenty of Music"

Sorry, it sucks. It really sucks (and I even like Too Much Too Soon).

Grand (grand), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 12:23 (nineteen years ago)

too much too soon rules! all the r&b covers are ace and human being is the apex of dolldom. agree the new record's bad, but the title's good (and fitting).

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 12:29 (nineteen years ago)

for a bunch of old men, i think it's not bad.

Aditya (dan138zig), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 14:48 (nineteen years ago)

Lots of it sounds like, um, the tenth David Johansen solo album or something (where his first solo LP was his best, then his second, etc.) (though maybe that early live solo album was better than the third, whatever). The song I dislike least is the one with "monkey" in the title, since it steals its rhythm from "Lust For Life."

xhuxk (xheddy), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 14:52 (nineteen years ago)

And for a bunch of old men, it's not as good as the last two Alice Cooper albums, the last ZZ Top album, the last three Deep Purple albums, or the new Def Leppard album (though they're less old) (well, less old than the Dolls guys, maybe not the Hanoi Rocks guys.)

xhuxk (xheddy), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 14:54 (nineteen years ago)

>I even like Too Much Too Soon<

Are there people who don't? (If so, they're idiots. But honestly, I never had any idea that people had anything against that album. If it's not as good as their first one, then it's pretty damn close.)

xhuxk (xheddy), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 14:56 (nineteen years ago)

David Johansen :
"There's so much negative bullshit being forced down people's throats in the marketplace, we really wanted to create a thing of beauty that will stand the test of time, and hopefully add something positive to people's lives..."

oh well, maybe next time...

emekars (emekars), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 15:46 (nineteen years ago)

both of the roots albums DJ made as David Johansen and the Harry Smiths were completely awesome, I wish he'd make more of them so that I and the five other people who bought them could be happy

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 16:29 (nineteen years ago)

I really like the title, though (almost insufferably pretentious but not quite). So much better than Brain Shampoo, which was Sylvain's idea according to Mojo.

mike a (mike a), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 16:59 (nineteen years ago)

Nice to hear Johansen play rock again but even bein the Dolls diehard i am this is obviously a Johansen solo album.I would rank it as the 3rd best.It is possible to almost put together a real 3rd Dolls album using material from the early portions of all the major players careers But this is about as much a Dolls album as Ringo playing with Paul makes a Beatles album.
I just wish this band had played on David's first & second solo albums.

evan chronister (evan chronister), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 22:49 (nineteen years ago)

By the way the second album is probably much closer to what the Dolls really sounded like. The extreme stereo separation really highlights the 2 guitar players different contributions.Okay the female chorus on Stranded In The Jungle was a bad idea. But Thunders guitar was red hot throughout this & whenever i dj Showdown kills on the dancefloor!!!

evan chronister (evan chronister), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 22:54 (nineteen years ago)

one month passes...
pretty good

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 31 July 2006 14:24 (nineteen years ago)

maybe very good

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 31 July 2006 14:49 (nineteen years ago)

Interesting Christgau piece. He is one of their biggest fans!

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 20:18 (nineteen years ago)

i LOVE the title.

aaron d.g. (aaron d.g.), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 20:48 (nineteen years ago)

I bought David Johansen's Sweet Revenge for two bucks because of Xgau's review. Never again. Dude's so unreliable when it comes releases from his "A+" bands. It is a great title, though.

Zwan (miccio), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 20:51 (nineteen years ago)

I like how in his big SY piece Xgau admits that his opinion of Murray Street and NYC Ghosts & Flowers doesn't measure remotely with what he wrote at the time - but this NEW one, oh yeah, A's all the way, baby.

Zwan (miccio), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 20:53 (nineteen years ago)

the SY record is decent - the single is great - but the Dolls record is better

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 21:07 (nineteen years ago)

How could some one not like the chorus vocals on stranded in the jungle? That must be my favorite thing that ever happens in a New York Dolls song.

Adam S S (Zephery), Thursday, 3 August 2006 02:19 (nineteen years ago)

FREE show at the South Street Seapawt's Pier 17 this Friday at 7.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 12:15 (nineteen years ago)

the album's not bad, but sorta pointless. like a self-consciously sloppier version of 70s solo Johansen. pretentious lyrics & title.

m coleman (lovebug starski), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 14:50 (nineteen years ago)

bet that live show will be fun, though. maybe I'll take the family.

m coleman (lovebug starski), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 14:51 (nineteen years ago)

i'm thinking the same thing, lovebug.

Ruud Haarvest (Ken L), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 14:52 (nineteen years ago)

"bet that live show will be fun, though"

it was!
great show, johanson can compete with mick jagger with energy and charisma on stage.
i liked the positive attitude, the energy, the almost "traditional rock show" attitude and the meditation book of johanson...

emekars (emekars), Saturday, 19 August 2006 20:11 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, it was fun. DJ looks how I imagine Carly Simon will in about 30 years.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 21 August 2006 12:17 (nineteen years ago)

even the best New York Dolls albums aren't that good imho. yet, i can't help but like them.
