Hans Werner Henze

I've been enjoying this LP by Matthias Spahlinger (sorta Lachenmann concrete stuff). Reading the notes that accompany this you find bits on the rift between him and Lachenmann etc.

I'm intrigued by old fights that only a few hundred ppl care about so looking to check something out. That, and i've not given neo-classical a proper run tbh.

I'd never heard of Lachenmann, so I checked him out on all music guide, in curiosity. Holy cow, the reviewer of this Extension album was unkind.

It's not just Lachenmann, everybody hates Henze

That review really really makes me want to hear the record.

ok i don't get that review: Do we need to hang on every word the composer says? What if, like Cage, Spahlinger doesn't care for content? Even if Cage made that claim, if the content doesn't add up to much (as it often does on CD) will the reviewer, as he seems to imply, apologize for it? Never mind the words 'boring' and 'soullessness' should the word 'pretentious' even exist in a review of this type of record, as you're, by defn, always pushing the line of what is or isn't pretentious?

Not heard that disc. The LP i have is on ed.RZ. xp

When ws that review written? If it was around 1999-2000, the equally extremely negative reaction would be interesting...just listening to 'extension' now and i think Lachenmann's opera from two years ago has changed the way this kind of music is perceived viz. critically-wise MANY of the negatives have been flipped to positives.

I can see what Cage is doing in this rev 'extension' captures that mythical feel of a happening, its randomized sounds have all been precisely codified, and when the pianos actually sounds as if it makes to a chord its almost quietly cutting.

one year passes...

Search: "El Cimarron", a set of songs for gtr, flute, baritone and perc, based on black slavery in Cuba during its colonial period.
