Do any ILMers podcast?

We've got some smart people around here, so I imagine an ILMers podcast would have pretty impeccable musical taste & infinitely insightful banter. Anybody?

Hoosteen (Hoosteen), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 16:53 (nineteen years ago)

I did a run of 5 or 6 weekly hour-long podcasts about this time a year ago, linked off my blog, with a proper RSS feed and all the gubbins. I'd love to do more, but no time etc etc.

It was one of the Aesthetics of Pop Stycasts (the Stylus podcast). We've interviewed other ILMers on AoP and a couple of ILMers have/had Stycasts, too.

I would love to listen to people's podcasts. I just wish that these podcast sites were more like internet radio, i.e., concentrated around a few sites instead of scattered all over the place. That way you could pick and choose by style of music and do some socializing too.

If by "podcast" you mean: do I, once every few months, consume a six pack of Mad River Steelhead Double IPA, stay up until 2 or 3 am, put way too much thought into a mix and then post it on my blog?

Then the answer is yes. Because I totally do that.

my feeling about this since college radio days is that as long as you're playing one track and not streaming entire albums, and broadcasting at lower quality, you should be okay?

Was doomscrolling the 2016 election day thread & came across your podcast. Fucking great!

It was on a accident (hardcore dilettante), Wednesday, 7 August 2024 13:41 (one year ago)

Nearly two years on, and we're still knocking out new episodes every two or three weeks. After a brief early brush with the upper reaches of the charts, we've got a dedicated core audience, most of them also Patreon subscribers - but given that we don't have celebrity guests, it's hard to bring new listeners in. Anyhow, it remains fulfilling and fun, and the casting has worked really well: the three of us come to pop music from very different angles, and we tend to disagree more than agree on the tunes, which obv makes for Top Bantz and all that...

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Monday, 3 February 2025 19:25 (one year ago)

Nice, sounds great! So I have a technical question for you (and any other ILX podcasters) — what set-up do you use for your remote recordings? I'm getting ready to launch a new thing too, and I've started using Riverside.fm, which seems promising. But curious what recording software you're using, as well as mic/headphone configurations.

paper plans (tipsy mothra), Saturday, 8 February 2025 16:19 (one year ago)

We use Zoom - we all record our own audio locally (headphones on), the others send them to me, and I edit in Audacity.

mike t-diva, Saturday, 8 February 2025 16:56 (one year ago)

OK cool. That's what Riverside does too, with the added bonus that it collects the local files and sends them to me without the participants' having to. Thanks!

paper plans (tipsy mothra), Saturday, 8 February 2025 17:22 (one year ago)

Oh one other question — assuming you've done this enough to get it to a level of efficiency, how long does it take you to edit an episode?

paper plans (tipsy mothra), Saturday, 8 February 2025 17:26 (one year ago)

About 1.5 to 2 days for a 90 minute episode of Which Decade Is Tops For Pops (and that's working quickly, using every available Audacity keyboard shortcut), but for Record Mirror Disco Charts it was more like 3 days for the same 90 minutes, as it was more high profile and I felt compelled to make it as good as I possibly could (not helped by one guest's local audio not recording, and the other guest not using headphones for his recording, hence unusable speaker bleed when voices overlapped - so I had some significant sound issues to resolve).

mike t-diva, Sunday, 9 February 2025 13:31 (one year ago)

I should add that doing this on a regular basis has made me hypersensitive to audible edits on radio/TV/other podcasts, which I’d never noticed before. A friend who used to be a BBC reporter told me that she would regularly spend a whole day working on a four minute clip for Radio 4, so by that standard I’m a slacker!
