A bad music situation

has anyone been in a position where they were forced to listen to awful music and couldn't do a fucking thing about it? this happened to me a couple of weeks ago; my drama teacher locked us in the theatre for 2+ hours while she went to clean up her office, and someone thought it would be funny to piss me off and play a Kelly Clarkson album full-fucking-blast over the loud speakers. FOR TWO HOURS--> made worse by half the class singing to it. i never wanted to commit mass murder so badly.

Yes, unfortunately these things do happen. Maybe ten years ago I spent Christmas eve at my brother's house and his lovely wife left Kenny G. on repeat for most of the evening. Thanks for the reminder!

i read a news story years back about a guy who flipped his car and landed upside down in a ditch with george michael's faith on constant repeat in the cassette deck. he was physically fine but trapped in the car and couldn't reach the tape deck had to listen to the album for 8 hours or something. he said he was probably not going to listen to it again.

When I did my military service almost ten years ago, I shared room with, among others, a guy who was unable to sleep without listening to the "Brothers in arms"-album. Urhh..

I used to live with a guy who would alternately blast Metallica's Load and Reload along with the first Papa Roach single ("CUT MY LIFE INTO PIECES/THIS IS MY LAST RESORT" etc., over and over). The best CD he had was Bone Thugs-N-Harmony's E.1999 Eternal but the only songs he would play off it were "1st of tha Month" and "Mo' Murda" FIRST THING EVERY MORNING.

this happens all the time when you have kids, the saving grace is seeing your child derive intense pleasure from what you perceive as "bad music" actually makes it hard to hate the offending racket. that said, ashlee simpson still tries my patience: sloppy singing.

"bad music situation" immediately brings to mind any class I've ever taken at the gym. Trying to breathe through a yoga class, wanting to replace the cringe of the shallow New Age music with Dead Can Dance, or I dunno, something, or the step classes where they're blaring La Bouche and that 90s house song with the piano chord intro--Madonna at best--and you just want to plug in your ipod with that great playlist you just created of all sorts of good mixes.
one of my least favorite situations, anyhow.

Oops I missed Killy's. All-teenpop sounds better, 45-minute loop sounds way worse. Ours was at least like a 3 hour loop or something. Still, "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year," and that's all I have to say about that.

This perhaps isn't the audience for this one, but I'll never forget a country weekend with a bunch of music buff friends of friends, who had decided to make it a celebration of eighties ''perfect pop". I mean they'd spent a LONG time making up mixtapes. They'd known each other from school, I was a guest and didn't know them well.

Hot dog. Jumping frog. Albuquerque. For forty-eight hours plus. Not my thing at all.
Miles from anywhere, and I didn't have my own transport. Hell is other people.

this really doesn't compare to much of what's already been said, and actually is just wide of the mark in terms of the thread topic, but the first thing that came to mind was a particularly scary seven-hour car-trip with some friends. Within minutes of setting out, the cd player jammed up (I had, of course, put together enough mixed cd's to fill the seven hours several times over, to the unanimous indifference of my friends). Naturally, I presumed we would fix this problem somehow, perhaps by getting a different car, as the notion of a semi-major roadtrip without music ws quite literally unthinkable to me (as in my brain actually refused my attempts to imagine it).

I've pretty much forgotten or blocked out the trip itself, but my initial reaction was a skin-crawling panic akin to what one might feel when an elevator seems to stop between floors while on two hits of acid.

My housemate in university went away for the weekend and locked his bedroom door without turning his CD player alarm off, which was 'Lady In Red' by Chris De Burgh at hefty volume. The CD then elected to stick on the line "THERE'S BEAUTY BY MY SIDE", which repeated for 20 minutes or so until we broke the door down

i worked in a very left-leaning liberal office environment. tolerant of everyone to a fault. the new secretary who was there full time as opposed to us in-n-out part timers played Xtian lite-rock allllll dayyyy everyday. talk about songs in heavy rotation. same jabber every hour with the most pleasant sounding android announcers.

Many years ago I had a terrible roommate who was trying to drive me out of the house - he'd get up early in the morning, blast pop music as loud as possible, lock his bedroom door, and go to work. "There and scared" was more like it, though reaching in and turning off the stereo would've been pretty funny. Working on the door would have a) taken planning and b) been kinda sneaky. I was more the impulsive/confrontational type in my youth (not a morning person either - don't aggravate the tired and cranky).

He fixed his side and I fixed mine, and that represented a weird kind of ceasefire. I left a couple months later, I heard he was evicted eventually after he pulled some more psycho shit with the next tenant and the landlord figured out he was a passive-aggressive maniac. Moved back in with his mother, bless her heart.
