serato scratch live - who's tried it?

I've heard really good things about this, and it's relatively affordable at least compared to what I remember Final Scratch costing last time I checked. Has anyone here used it? What was it like?

Basically I'm pretty luddite and have never been able to cope with cd decks - need that real vinyl feel. However digital distribution means there really is very little point in sticking to vinyl for new releases anymore. Is using this really just like using actual vinyl?

Also, is there anyway around the 'thin-ness' of sound you get with mp3s? Or does that just come with the territory?

Any and all info welcome...

I use it every week and I really like it. It feels very close to vinyl and it's much more responsive than Final Scratch.

The sound of MP3s comes with the territory. If you go back and forth between vinyl and MP3s, you'll sometimes hear a difference in the bottom-end presence especially, but a lot of it depends on the particular tunes you're playing. 320K MP3s are best; I won't play anything lower than 256K out on a club system because it sounds really brittle to my ears.

Some other nice things:

- no bass feedback, ever
- the ability to instantly use a double of anything in your collection
- looping and cue points (which are stored with the track meta data)
- Paying $1.49-$1.99 for an import tune versus having to pay $12-14 bucks for the vinyl.

So buy 50 tunes and it's already virtually paid for itself!!!!

Okay, I'm pretty sold.

The thought of ripping all my vinyl to mp3 fills me with utter dread though. Have to have a 'vinyl ripping party' or something...

serato rules. get it bundled with the new rane ttm57. it will set you back a cool 1400, but it will be worth it.

The nice thing about the serato box is being able to install it so quickly on the fly when you're playing out. If you get the ttm57, you'd have to swap out the mixer at every club you played at. Crazy nice mixer though.

What about djDecks? It's free and works with Serato vinyls (as well as Final Scratch), but it runs on Windows only. But it seems to work just as well? And I'd give up a few features to save $1400 (think of how much vinyl you could buy...).

I know Diplo uses Scratch Live. Whether that's relevant or not I don't know.

thirteen years pass...

Obviously I’m like 15 years late to the party, but I got a new DJ Mixer with Serato and I’m loving mixing between records and digital, all using the turntable/mixer interface! Good times. And now you can sync to Ableton so I can even sync effects pedals, etc.
