From Warp website:

Developed over 4 years, Greedy Baby has evolved out of a relationship between Plaid and filmaker and animator Bob Jaroc, touring and continually developing their live audio-visual show to audiences from Buenos Aries, to Tokyo, Istanbul, London’s Imax and beyond.

The creation of this new album and dvd was made with tracks and video passing back and forth, inspiring and informing either parties in creative exchange.

Greedy baby is a moody body of work that is at times angry and haunted and other times, warm opulent and lively. This is a true creative exchange so darkness (inspired by these dangerous days) in the animation is fleshed out with light in the music and visa versa, so a balance is struck.

For this soundtrack Plaid's music is very rich, with a classic soundtrack feel, Plaid's electronics fleshed out with thoughtful arrangements with strings, choral voices, thembe and bossa piano. What is more the album was written in 5.1 surround sound specifically for the audio visual experience, which makes it a unique piece of work and an incredible experience for the eyes and ears.

I remember hearing about this when I was talking to one of the guys from Plaid after a show last November or something. Sounded interesting. I don't have 5.1 though and I'm unsure as to the likelihood of a Glasgow promoter putting the audio visual show on here (though I may be pleasantly surprised).

I tried really hard to like Spokes, and it just never happened, despite the fact I've loved every other Plaid release since Not For Threes and that I thought Double Figure was the best thing they've ever done. So I'm tending towards unexcited on this, although the talk of strings and choirs might be promising, maybe. I guess I'll give it a go.

Hmm, having just watched that wee trailer, I'd say that visually this looks completely MEH. So fuck the dvd. Guess I'll still try out the cd, but if it's just going to be a literal soundtrack to the film (with dialogue and sound effects and things) then I expect that's going to annoy me as well.

i agree - spokes was passable but not a patch on their previous two. if the dvd is anything like the live show they gave at glasto 2004 then i'll be happy.

It's pretty good though. Nice visuals with a strange Mexican wrestling superhero cartoon in the middle. But musically I like this way better than anything they did before.

Plaid were at Glastonbury in 2004? Damn, didn't know about that. I'll bet I was watching bloody Muse or something instead.

JimD (JimD), Thursday, 29 June 2006 12:17 (nineteen years ago)

yeh i think it was 2004... yeh it was. they played in the little gladey bit backtoback with squarepusher who was also good.

that said, their visuals actually completely outshone the music.

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 29 June 2006 12:24 (nineteen years ago)

they should have worked with pleix on the dvd, this looks crap.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 29 June 2006 12:51 (nineteen years ago)

what's pleix?

(that "birds" video is incredible)

It's incredibly dull, dog.

Ah, I think I was watching basement jaxx. I headed over to try and catch the end of squarepusher afterwards, and got there in time for the last 30 seconds.

hmmm... mixed feelings about this release now i have it. the music really isn't "all that" is it? it doesn't really contain a standout track nor any big bright moments like on Restproof Clockwork nor the beauty of Double Figure nor the fractured kaleidoscopeia of "Spokes". So what do we have instead? A few downtrodden soundscapes, unbeguiling mood pieces, a couple of half-arsed attempts at catchiness which leave no particular impression on the mind.
The videos are hit and miss. Things like the Super Barrio animation are visually exciting and I remember being very affected when I saw it live. The flaws shine through on the DVD and I found that the music rarely fits the mood of the video-piece. The Super Barrio cartoon is let down by a sparse down-tempo piece of music that hardly connotes the victory of a cartoon superhero beating down the tyrrany of an oppressed political state.
Many of the videos are incredibly dull too, especially the first three - the first song proper being a sort of spinny view of some empty doorways and windows which, while going in time with the music does not present an interesting enough subject-matter to hold interest.
The next video looks like a really boring Winamp plugin and does very very little compared to, say Autechre's awesome Gantz Graf video.
On the other hand I did enjoy the one witht he infinite amount of birds flying around and also the extra track with the CNN footage cycling through very fast.
