Identify a Song, Please?

This has bugged me intermittently for years and I'm not sure I have enough info to be useful. It was a song my Dad had on tape in the early to mid 70s. It could have been Andy Williams - not dissimilar voice, as I recall. The melody was like a stereotypical French accordian tune, not played on an accordion I don't think but the same kind of notes, a bit like the intro to "Where Do You Go To My Lovely?", just two or three notes up and down, almost. The tempo was quite relaxed, and the only lyric I can remember at the moment is a breakdown-like bit in the middle where the singer goes "Oooo-kaaaaay" (I think) and he's echoed by female backing vocalists (I think). This mightn't be much to go on, but any ideas?

Don't think so, the vocalist had a mid-Atlantic kinda accent, American if anything.

I don't think it can be Andy Williams, the guys voice as I remember it was "cooler" than that.

Oh, sorry, I was being an idiot and not reading your post properly.

Harry Nilsson's "Maybe"? The "Ooooo-Kaay" bit would have to be May-ay-ay-beee" though, echoed by himself.

No, I just checked and that's not it. Going by my Dad's musical taste I'd say the song had probably been a UK hit at some point in the 60s or early 70s.

Righto !

The song is called "A little love and understanding" and is by Gilbert Becaud. Or thereabouts, spelling wise.
