Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 22 June 2006 20:52 (eighteen years ago)

and it's reminded me of everything i loved about new order.

weirdly, given that between them gillian and steve are making a farty arse of the whole job, it's a pretty stunning vocal performance from barney.

1979, gary numan "are friends electric"

being the guitarist in the tubeway army wasn't a challenging job, was it? :)

Our Kate recreates the video for "Wuthering Heights" live in the studio.

"Da da da, I don't love you, you don't love me".

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 22 June 2006 21:13 (eighteen years ago)

Bah, "recreates the video!" From what I can tell, every Kate song has its own choreography / interpretive dance, which would seem to exist -- like the song -- totally independent of medium or format, video or stage. (Except maybe for "Sat in Your Lap" or whichever one has all the rollerskating.) After a long night of youtubing I can now passably perform a couple of those dances. There's something alternately lovable and horrifying about how literally interpretive she is about every single line -- e.g. "Wuthering Heights" seems bad enough with the "I hated you" (angryface) "I loved you, too" (dreamface), but then comes the chorus where she actually trots around pretending to be Catherine's ghost, shivering ("so cold") and pressing her palms mime-style against the window.

The Belle Stars, ladies and gentlemen.

a) They've managed to construct a dance routine that somehow contains no "clapping"
b) the lead singer apparently invented lesbian attire for the next 20 years.

Not just the most complaints on TOTP, but the most complaints for anything in British broadcasting history.

Call me dumb, but why, exactly? Is it because of the balaclava? (I've seen the clip before and I actually think it's pretty damned great for a mimed performance and all.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 22 June 2006 23:12 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, it was the balaclava - wasn't it in the middle of an IRA bombing campaign or something?

(Note: Richey miming? Surely not)

Si.C@rter (SiC@rter), Thursday, 22 June 2006 23:16 (eighteen years ago)

Because it was seen as a deliberate reference to the IRA, and the clip went out (if memory serves) only a few months after the Shankhill Road bombings.
