Roughage Crew (Enrique), Thursday, 22 June 2006 10:02 (nineteen years ago)

i am working on getting this. i love alesha!

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 22 June 2006 10:13 (nineteen years ago)

Tim to thread!

Okay! I'm here!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 22 June 2006 11:24 (nineteen years ago)

i was slightly disappointed that alesha is distancing herself from her mcing!

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 22 June 2006 11:27 (nineteen years ago)

slightly disappointed doesnt cover it. really, really dislike the new stuff

still a bit better than sabrina puma washington tho, lol

rtccc (mwah), Thursday, 22 June 2006 13:47 (nineteen years ago)

"what is that you're holding / is it something swollen"

rtccc (mwah), Thursday, 22 June 2006 13:48 (nineteen years ago)

"i was slightly disappointed that alesha is distancing herself from her mcing!"

What? No! There is no point to non-MCing Alesha!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 22 June 2006 22:02 (nineteen years ago)

"ENTEAAHH!!" God Alesha is fit, even when doing scary lady Dalek voice.

I quit like Pocket Rocket for it's sheer absurdity. And where the fuck did she get Puma Washington from?

chap who would dare to be a nerd, not a geek (chap), Thursday, 22 June 2006 23:30 (nineteen years ago)

one month passes...
haven't got round to listening to it. is it any good?

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 31 July 2006 12:36 (nineteen years ago)

it's good if you pretend it's by ashlee simpson.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 31 July 2006 12:41 (nineteen years ago)

it's not good if at any point you think about how awesome mis-teeq were.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 31 July 2006 12:42 (nineteen years ago)

they were ok.

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 31 July 2006 12:42 (nineteen years ago)

Agh! She doesn't do the creepy rap-natter thing? Why?!

from The ends of your fingers (prosper.strummer.), Monday, 31 July 2006 12:44 (nineteen years ago)

Because she wants to keep it listenable?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 31 July 2006 12:45 (nineteen years ago)

But it was incredible. Daft pop brilliance. There were other reasons to listen to Misteeq but that was the only one that mattered to me. And a lot of people.

from The ends of your fingers (prosper.strummer.), Monday, 31 July 2006 12:46 (nineteen years ago)

alesha's mcing was GREAT.

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 31 July 2006 12:55 (nineteen years ago)

hasn't Ms Dynamite gone back to MC-ing recently?

fandango (fandango), Monday, 31 July 2006 13:00 (nineteen years ago)

Good, I could use a nap.

from The ends of your fingers (prosper.strummer.), Monday, 31 July 2006 13:03 (nineteen years ago)

Alesha is fit

OTM!

fandango (fandango), Monday, 31 July 2006 13:09 (nineteen years ago)

even i think alesha is fit.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 31 July 2006 13:15 (nineteen years ago)

I still remember her jumping around like a firecracker, giving it some on Parkinson(!) when asked to demonstrate her "freestyling" or whatever he was calling it.

fandango (fandango), Monday, 31 July 2006 13:18 (nineteen years ago)

alesha is mighty fit. and "lipstick" is ace. end of discussion. k?

danzig (danzig), Monday, 31 July 2006 13:33 (nineteen years ago)

te thing with 'lipstick' is that, as rocky songs go, it's alright. very catchy and she gets totally into it. BUT WHY IS IT ROCKY IN THE FIRST PLACE?! she's alesha motherfucking dixon. she is better than this.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 31 July 2006 13:42 (nineteen years ago)

Perhaps she wants to sell records in today's marketplace?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 31 July 2006 14:16 (nineteen years ago)

That's a pretty boring reason. Are you supporting it as a good reason? I think it's time people start TELLING the public what they want.

from The ends of your fingers (prosper.strummer.), Monday, 31 July 2006 14:17 (nineteen years ago)

lol totalitarianism

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 31 July 2006 14:18 (nineteen years ago)

I think it's time people start TELLING the public what they want.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 31 July 2006 14:19 (nineteen years ago)

if the only way to sell records these days is to be rocky, there's nothing for it - we have to ban guitars completely. and shoot all indie kids.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 31 July 2006 14:19 (nineteen years ago)

I just mean that people go wild for things that are bonkers. O Superman, Autobahn, Toxic. Those are probably shit examples but I'm trying to get at something, what is it? Oh yeah, Misteeq fucking rule!

from The ends of your fingers (prosper.strummer.), Monday, 31 July 2006 14:23 (nineteen years ago)

'o superman' is the worst example ever.

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 31 July 2006 14:27 (nineteen years ago)

Why?

from The ends of your fingers (prosper.strummer.), Monday, 31 July 2006 14:30 (nineteen years ago)

o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o rly?

fandango (fandango), Monday, 31 July 2006 14:30 (nineteen years ago)

- shit song
- as overused a ref as '4'33'''
- weird in a bad way.

'sexyback' is weird.

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 31 July 2006 14:31 (nineteen years ago)

Okay, I don't know what that means fandango.

from The ends of your fingers (prosper.strummer.), Monday, 31 July 2006 14:32 (nineteen years ago)

And that last bit is the point I was TRYING to make. (As opposed to the point I did, I'm not sure what it was.) But please don't knock O Superman. This is neither the time nor place.

from The ends of your fingers (prosper.strummer.), Monday, 31 July 2006 14:34 (nineteen years ago)

It was a weak joke... I wasn't having a pop at the song.

fandango (fandango), Monday, 31 July 2006 14:38 (nineteen years ago)

Any random song by Matchbox 20 > "O Superman"

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 31 July 2006 14:39 (nineteen years ago)

people like a catchy tune and a beat you can bounce to.

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 31 July 2006 14:40 (nineteen years ago)

Come ON!

from The ends of your fingers (prosper.strummer.), Monday, 31 July 2006 14:40 (nineteen years ago)

Is "Toxic" really that bonkers? Isn't it just the first attempt by Murricans at Xeno-pop?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 31 July 2006 14:41 (nineteen years ago)

'toxic' is really trebly. it's not as bonkers, or indeed as good, as 'brave new girl' or '(i got that) boom boom' though.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 31 July 2006 14:42 (nineteen years ago)

or 'outrageous', come to that. or 'touch of my hand'.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 31 July 2006 14:42 (nineteen years ago)

I just want her to rap. Okay?

from The ends of your fingers (prosper.strummer.), Monday, 31 July 2006 14:45 (nineteen years ago)

She should cover "Holiday Rap" or "Today Was A Good Day".

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 31 July 2006 14:45 (nineteen years ago)

Nice.

from The ends of your fingers (prosper.strummer.), Monday, 31 July 2006 14:46 (nineteen years ago)

i don't think lex has properly heard 'toxic'. it has quite deep and exciting bass.

it's not THAT weird. weirder than lallen or philton.

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 31 July 2006 14:46 (nineteen years ago)

Wait, I know what I meant. Toxic was a smash but sounded bizarre to most of the people who bought it. Like O Superman. Here Come the planes.

from The ends of your fingers (prosper.strummer.), Monday, 31 July 2006 14:49 (nineteen years ago)

Toxic was a smash but sounded bizarre to most of the people who bought it.

only if they'd spent the last decade listening to SONIC YOUTH or something.

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 31 July 2006 14:56 (nineteen years ago)

I dunno, it kinda sounds like some of the Ciccone Youth stuff.

from The ends of your fingers (prosper.strummer.), Monday, 31 July 2006 14:57 (nineteen years ago)

Was that a deliberate Lex pwn, Enrique, or just a happy coincidence?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 31 July 2006 14:57 (nineteen years ago)

I just want her to rap. Okay?

Alesha has said that there are a few tracks where she MC's on her album. It's supposed to be more of a pop album - Richard X, Xenomania, etc, although estelle is supposed to be in there too. But she's still shouting :) which is why I love "lipstick" - but for those who are dying for alesharapping there are the shystie and agent x remixes.

danzig (danzig), Monday, 31 July 2006 16:17 (nineteen years ago)

Excellent!

from The ends of your fingers (prosper.strummer.), Monday, 31 July 2006 16:20 (nineteen years ago)

Was that a deliberate Lex pwn, Enrique, or just a happy coincidence?
-- Dom Passantino (juror...), July 31st, 2006.

lex-pwnage is second-nature; i can't tell the difference any more.

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 08:47 (nineteen years ago)

you have never pwned me nrq! and neither has dom obviously.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 08:55 (nineteen years ago)

three months pass...
from um racistjustice:

"WE LOVE YOU ALESHA DIXON

Poor Alesha Dixon. Here is this week's Top 75. Can you see 'Knockdown' in there? No. No you can't.

Perhaps it is time for Alesha, Jamelia, Maria Lawson, Javine 'et al' to get together and ask the country why no one will buy records by decent young British black female artists.

The British public aren't in any way racist are they?

In other news, here are the X-Factor singers the public voted to be this week's bottom two."

benrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 16:56 (nineteen years ago)

'Knock Down' peaked at #69 the previous week i think

it is pretty good tho

lex pretend, Friday, 22 August 2008 08:40 (seventeen years ago)

TRUE.

Lex did you ever hear the Bump & Flex dub that's just that interlude section and Alesha rapping for the whole thing?

Tim F, Friday, 22 August 2008 09:58 (seventeen years ago)

Also if you haven't heard "Eye Candy" the track before I posted it to the funky house thread.

Tim F, Friday, 22 August 2008 10:03 (seventeen years ago)

i've had eye candy the album since it came out but couldn't remember the track when you flagged it up - went back to it, i don't think i'd ever actually got to the end of the album! anyway yeah that beat is really something, and definitely presages what people like arms are doing now.

never heard bump&flex dub, it sounds terrific - though her MCing in the original is really elevated by its presence in the middle of all the smoothness

lex pretend, Friday, 22 August 2008 10:17 (seventeen years ago)

the boy does nothing = B
the boy does nothing crazy cousinz rmx = A+

the alesha show sampler = :(

lex pretend, Thursday, 23 October 2008 08:26 (seventeen years ago)

Shame; I really like the single.

Eric in the East Neuk of Anglia (Marcello Carlin), Thursday, 23 October 2008 08:37 (seventeen years ago)

yeah the single's fine - a relief, mostly - but it's really marred for me by that line "when he dances, not to the beat". it's like, no, that sort of clunkiness is not unacceptable, please redo. and seriously "when he dances all offbeat" would totally have sufficed, scansion-wise. luckily that line is excised from the crazy cousinz remix which just keeps the central hook and adds a funky beat of the sort that alesha should be jumping on for her originals anyway.

the album seems to be dominated by yet MORE serviceable 60s-influenced pop, and a big ballad about being the wronged woman which is like a B-grade 'no air' but which i might grow to love. not quite as boring as sugababes/girls aloud tedium but ehhhh. and no MCing :(

lex pretend, Thursday, 23 October 2008 08:42 (seventeen years ago)

*not acceptable

lex pretend, Thursday, 23 October 2008 08:43 (seventeen years ago)

Is this Miranda bloody Cooper doing the "lyrics" again?

"If I Were A Boy" should already have rendered all other contemporary attempts at wronged woman big ballads redundant.

Eric in the East Neuk of Anglia (Marcello Carlin), Thursday, 23 October 2008 08:49 (seventeen years ago)

don't really know anything about this broad or her group but stumbled upon this one awesome song, surprised there were whole threads about her that never mentioned it:

some dude, Friday, 6 February 2009 04:48 (seventeen years ago)

That's some seriously next level amateur fan youtube videoclipping. song is good but there's still no point to non-MCing Alesha Dixon.

Tim F, Friday, 6 February 2009 12:48 (seventeen years ago)

did you ever hear the crazy cousinz remix of 'the boy does nothing', tim?

lex pretend, Friday, 6 February 2009 14:15 (seventeen years ago)

i think i could probably live with a non-MCing alesha if she was to take UK funky into the charts. her singing voice has bags of character, and is wasted on her solo material.

lex pretend, Friday, 6 February 2009 14:16 (seventeen years ago)

not heard much of this but that first single with the strictly come dancing references was :(

i dont really wanna hear her mcing though id take a few songs of THAT done properly (ie not with a blatant eye for daytime radio 1) over her singing, cos shes not much of a singer. im not sure what she does do well actually, except dance.
