I was kinda skeptical about modern punks. Thought they're all just ripping nofx and bad religion. But out of recommendation I downloaded bands like against me, choking victim, leftover crack, etc. and i like them. So recommend me more good modern punk albums (90-now)

I don't know how modern 90 on counts as, but born against definitely fall into that time period

McLusky

Soophie Nun Squad

Ed Corcoran (ecorcoran), Thursday, 22 June 2006 12:49 (nineteen years ago)

90-on is pretty huge - Nation of Ulysses' "13 Point Pgrogram ot Destroy America" and "Plays Pretty for Baby" are both 90-on and are both absolute essentials.

Tiki Theater Xymposium (Bent Over at the Arclight), Thursday, 22 June 2006 13:32 (nineteen years ago)

The Blood Brothers - Burn Piano Island Burn
Refused - Shape of Punk to Come
Dillinger Four - Situationist Comedy and/or Vs. God

Simon H. (Simon H.), Thursday, 22 June 2006 13:34 (nineteen years ago)

If it doesn't matter if the band itself isn't modern, the UK Subs did 2 albums with their "classic lineup" around '96 which are now combined on 1 CD called Complete Riot and it's well worth getting (no really) if you like their early stuff. The rest of their 90's output is a bit hit and miss.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 22 June 2006 13:46 (nineteen years ago)

More:

Hard Skin - Hard Nuts and Hard Cunts
Poison Idea - Feel The Darkness
Gits - Frenching the Bully
Queers - Grow Up
New Bomb Turks - Destroy-Oh-Boy

Then there's tons of garage punk bands but not sure if they count - Oblivians, Teengenerate, Rip Offs, Reatards, etc.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 22 June 2006 13:58 (nineteen years ago)

Nation Of Ulysses seconded, also try Against Me.

sleeve (sleeve), Thursday, 22 June 2006 14:20 (nineteen years ago)

Uh, I think (s)he has, if you read the 1st post :)

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 22 June 2006 14:21 (nineteen years ago)

2nd votes for Poison Idea (Blank Blackout Vacant too), Gits and NBT. The Dwarves' Blood Guts and Pussy is essential.

For the Oughts:

A Frames - S/T
Exploding Hearts - Guitar Romantic
The Ends - Concrete Dissapointment
Crimson Spectre - S/T
The Minds - Plastic Girls
Soviettes - 2

Infact, just about everything on Dirtnap Records is worth checking out

bendy (bendy), Thursday, 22 June 2006 15:45 (nineteen years ago)

Exploding Hearts seconded. Killer album.

Also, Born Against.

Ed Corcoran (ecorcoran), Thursday, 22 June 2006 17:03 (nineteen years ago)

Exploding Hearts is a great pick.

The Selby Tigers are another excellent punk band, their second album is best, called The Curse of the Selby Tigers.

Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments, "Bait and Switch" ('95)

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Thursday, 22 June 2006 19:08 (nineteen years ago)

The first Soviettes record is great too.

What about Riot Grrl stuff. Maybe it's out of vogue now but I still love my Bikini Kill, Team Dresch, and that first Sleater-Kinney album (before they toned it down).

Those first couple of Rancid records are pretty fun.

Also, The Humpers, Avail, Unbroken, the comeback Descendents record, ...

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 22 June 2006 20:01 (nineteen years ago)

I already have Exploding Hearts and Refused but haven't got around listening to it. So far, I've downloaded:

-Drive Like Jehu
-Dwarves
-Streetlight Manifesto
-The Unseen
-Strike Anywhere
-Kid Dynamite
-Cap'n Jazz
-Screeching Weasel
-20 Years of Dischord

Okay, not all of them are modern.

Aditya (dan138zig), Thursday, 22 June 2006 22:25 (nineteen years ago)

Leftover Crack is a fantastic band name.

OTM. And another DirtNap band. The guy behind that label has great taste. Snotty without being juvinile, New Wave without being jokey. Pogo Punk!

bendy (bendy), Friday, 23 June 2006 00:34 (nineteen years ago)

Last two Bowling For Soup albums are good. Plus Atom & His Package.

Bowling for Soup?

Aditya (dan138zig), Friday, 23 June 2006 01:51 (nineteen years ago)

I don't like those guys.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 23 June 2006 01:55 (nineteen years ago)

Nobody in their right mind would like a band named Bowling for Soup.

Aditya (dan138zig), Friday, 23 June 2006 04:37 (nineteen years ago)

you haven't been on ILX long enough. no one here is in their right mind.

The best modern punk song is "50 Bourbon St." by the Black Halos. I don't think the rest of the album was that great though.

Lee is Free (Lee is Free), Friday, 23 June 2006 14:16 (nineteen years ago)

LIVE FAST DIE -- GG style sickness and fun
HUNCHBACK -- punk rock + vintage Touch & Go sounds + surf rock

chad (chad), Friday, 23 June 2006 16:07 (nineteen years ago)

Many seconds to the Marked Men, upthread. One of my fave bands. One of their (many) side projects is High Tension Wires whose album is also pretty great.

And, although I'm not sure if they're the type of punk being looked for, have to suggest the Riverboat Gamblers. (I'd go for their first two albums)

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Friday, 23 June 2006 16:09 (nineteen years ago)

Yep, Popular Shapes are good too, more at the spazzy-Spizz end of punk too.

bendy (bendy), Friday, 23 June 2006 17:13 (nineteen years ago)

Definitely Mcluksy, Giddy Motors and Wives.

Shaun (shaun), Friday, 23 June 2006 17:57 (nineteen years ago)

Hot Snakes

latebloomer aka rap's yoko ono (latebloomer), Friday, 23 June 2006 19:52 (nineteen years ago)

xpost Blood Brothers Burn Piano Island Burn: that is hardcore screamo, like Test Icicles. If you like that, you're in luck with those, otherwise not so much. glampunk(with some metal, exec producer Jack Douglas's best since the 70s heyday of clients Patti Smith Group and Aerosmith, who are both ancestors of): Texas Terri Bomb!, Your Lips My Ass; Frisco don't-call-us-punks-despite-our-stupid-names pioneers, later Talibanned by early 80s "hardcore punks" for being too creative(recently with the Nuns' Monsignor Pat Ryan added for comeback tour): Crime, San Francisco's Still Doomed!; punks who have probably studied the previous two albums or think like that anyway: Slunt, Get A Load Of This; punks who finally made another good album: the Donnas, Gold Medal; punks who lost their lead guitarist but are back with classic Kill Rock Stars female tribal thunder: Erase Errata, Nightlife (out July 25)

don (dow), Friday, 23 June 2006 20:32 (nineteen years ago)

These Arms Are Snakes, Raised Fist, Turbonegro. The latest albums by Bouncing Souls and Lagwagon haven't let me down.

But yeah, the best modern punk bands have been Exploding Hearts, McLusky, and Hot Snakes, and all are sadly no longer playing.

pinder (pinder), Friday, 23 June 2006 23:16 (nineteen years ago)

A Frames

Ryan WS (fffv), Saturday, 24 June 2006 00:54 (nineteen years ago)

Blood Brothers >>>>>>>> Test Icicles

And yes Mclusky are fucking massive. Third album underrated.

Simon H. (Simon H.), Saturday, 24 June 2006 00:57 (nineteen years ago)

I second New Bomb Turks and third Poison Idea (feel the darkness being one of the best rock albums of the last 20 years) and raise you Antiseen's last five albums.

Turbonegro rule, even if their last record wasn't up to par.
