Oh noes! Sixteen year olds having sex!

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Thursday, 22 June 2006 15:56 (nineteen years ago)

I'm sure this will go a long way towards making the Internet safe for our children.

Half loaf, half pompadour (noodle vague), Thursday, 22 June 2006 16:01 (nineteen years ago)

Sheesh. What's the age of consent in England? 23?

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Thursday, 22 June 2006 19:06 (nineteen years ago)

Sorry, Patrick got to it first.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Thursday, 22 June 2006 19:07 (nineteen years ago)

The age of of consent in England is 16, so therefore writing about them having sex is hardly a crime. It's all been blown out of proportion 'cos he got done a few years back for looking (for research) at child porn. Mind you he is 61, and I'd have thought he'd be more concerned with digging his allotment or adding to his 'Franklin Mint' collection than writing about two teenagers fucking.

babysquid (babysquid), Friday, 23 June 2006 07:58 (nineteen years ago)

"(for research)" - matter of opinion, that one.

Townshend's obviously somebody who for a long time has been obsessed with his lost youth: at least as far back as Quadrophenia.

winona ryder shoplifted "for research"

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 23 June 2006 08:08 (nineteen years ago)

xpost as far back as "My Generation", and he hadn't even lost it then. Or had he?

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 23 June 2006 09:17 (nineteen years ago)

'"I'm going to lose it at last," he cried
Swinging lissomely out of his cage
Referring, of course, to his chastity
He was just at that difficult age'

("Brother Gorilla", Jake Thackray)

I refuse by force of will to remember Pete Townshend as some old pervert!

nicky lo-fi (nicky lo-fi), Friday, 23 June 2006 09:24 (nineteen years ago)

Well, the point I was sort of making was:

It's OK for 'old' blokes to write fiction about youngsters getting it on, but Pete is now prevented from doing so as he has been 'tarnished' by that incident, and so anything 'sexy' he might write has some sort of bad connotation.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 23 June 2006 09:31 (nineteen years ago)

I read that as "some sort of bald connotation"

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 23 June 2006 09:35 (nineteen years ago)

I think those charities are being very silly. I shall stop my standing orders forthwith.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 23 June 2006 09:57 (nineteen years ago)

I was thinking of "My Generation", but maybe that's not pining for lost youth so much as being very self-conscious of its fleetingness. The more I think about it, nostalgia and mortality are near the centre of all his work.

Half loaf, half pompadour (noodle vague), Friday, 23 June 2006 10:28 (nineteen years ago)

Ray Davies did that first. Like so much of what Pete Townshend did. Not that I don't appreciate Pete.

Sunday afternoon there's something special
It's just like another world.
Jogging in the park is my excuse
To look at all the little girls.

I'm not a flasher in a rain coat,
I'm not a dirty old man,
I'm not gonna snatch you from your mother,
I'm an art lover.
Come to daddy,
Ah, come to daddy,
Come to daddy.

Pretty little legs, I want to draw them,
Like a Degas ballerina.
Pure white skin, like porcelain,
She's a work of art and I should know
I'm an art lover.
Come to daddy,
And I'll give you some spangles.

Little girl don't notice me
Watching as she innocently plays.
She can't see me staring at her
Because I'm always wearing shades.
She feeds the ducks, looks at the flowers.
I follow her around for hours and hours.
I'd take her home, but that could never be,
She's just a substitute
For what's been taken from me.
Ah, come to daddy, come on.

Sunday afternoon can't last forever,
Wish I could take you home.
So, come on, give us a smile
Before you vanish out of view.
I've learned to appreciate you
The way art lovers do,
And I only want to look at you.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 23 June 2006 10:41 (nineteen years ago)

hmm. What's that from then?

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 23 June 2006 10:45 (nineteen years ago)

A Chris Langham album?

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 23 June 2006 10:47 (nineteen years ago)

That'll be The Kinks "Art Lover" - See Ray Davies did get there first!

Guilty Boksen (Bro_Danielson), Friday, 23 June 2006 11:24 (nineteen years ago)

"(for research)" - matter of opinion, that one.

he wrote publicly on his site about going to that specific website (and how utterly horrified he was by it) over a year before he was arrested for it. and as dave marsh put it at the time, "This is basically about criminalizing investigative behavior — saying, 'You're not allowed to investigate certain things.' And any journalist who doesn't feel threatened by that is not paying attention."

Lawrence the Looter (Lawrence the Looter), Friday, 23 June 2006 12:07 (nineteen years ago)

So, is this the first time that an *artist* has got in trouble for writing fan fiction, instead of vice versa?

How does a ferret get invisible, then? (kate), Friday, 23 June 2006 12:10 (nineteen years ago)

"investigate"

jonviachicago (jonviachicago), Friday, 23 June 2006 12:11 (nineteen years ago)

Did he really have to go to the site to confirm that he'd be "utterly horrified" by it?
