What was the first record or group to use the waka chaka ( you know shaft style wah wah guitar) sound? I know loads of people (hendrix, cream etc) used it but who was the first to use it in this style?

You know, I'm tempted to say Hendrix on Voodoo Chile (A Slight Return)...?

[I'm sure the first cat to play thru a wah-wah probably made that noise, but you're talking PUBLISHED, so...]

I mean, by "waka-chaka", I assume you mean MUTED strings being struck while a wah pedal is rocked to and fro (as opposed to actual wah'd notes)...

do you mean like BOW-CHICK-A-WOW-WOW!!!!?????!?!?

or are these two different things?

Well, the RUDIMENTS of that particular technique most likely originate in Hendrix's "Little Miss Lover", far as I can tell. As for breaking it down and streamlining and syncopating it disco/"Shaft" style, Mark Farner (Grand Funk) did a bit of that in "Into The Sun" from '69; but there's probably better and earlier examples that haven't come to mind yet. (Ike Turner? Freddie Stone maybe?)

Yep. Little Miss Lover.

From the wiki-tron:

"The song "Little Miss Lover" was the first to feature percussive muted wahwah -effect (with the fretboard hand "killing" notes) - a technique that was later adopted by many other guitarists (it can be heard for example on Isaac Hayes's famous Shaft -theme). "Little Miss Lover" is also notable for being a predecessor of "funk rock" music that Hendrix later developed further."

That's on Axis right? I'll give it a spin when I get home tonight.

Well I've listened to it and it's a bit more 'waka' than 'waka chaka' but I can see what you mean. It's a bit more heavy than funky and very fuzzed. I'm thinking the first funk Waka Chaka record. maybe I should have been more clear at the begining, still good to see/hear the genesis of a million 70's/80's porn soundtracks!

Earl Hooker. Check out his weird Chicago wah-wah blues
