It's June 24, 2006. What's your favorite top ten albums/releases of all time?

The ridiculousness of the question and the annoyance of the many factors that would go into coming up with 10 serious answers is what makes it fun. You get the most bang by listing box sets, of course, but only if you really like the whole thing. For me, a short little album like Sgt. Pepper would blow away a lot of box sets I really like.

How weird and, I guess, sad it is that this will probably identify me until the day I die. I can still put this thing in whenever and feel like it's a hot summer night and many beers are in order.

brg30 (brg30), Monday, 26 June 2006 16:52 (nineteen years ago)

Alright, I'll bite. No order. And likely different from my "best of all time" list, since this is favorites, blah blah blah.

Smiths - The Queen Is Dead
Public Enemy - It Takes A Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back
Prince - Sign "O" the Times
Alexander O'Neal - Hearsay
ABC - The Lexicon of Love
Frankie Goes to Hollywood - Welcome to the Pleasure Dome
Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation
Masters at Work - The 10th Anniversary Collection, Parts 1 & 2
Steely Dan - Aja
Meshell Ndegéocello - Peace Beyond Passion

I like Alf's list better than mine. Clearly, I am an 50-year-old codger who believes no good music has been made in the past decade.

the albums in my car at the moment. my favourites.

nicholas de jong (nicholas de jong), Monday, 26 June 2006 16:56 (nineteen years ago)

lessee ...

Whitehouse -- Erector
Hair -- Original Cast Recording
Mantronix -- The Album
Sting - Dream of the Blue Turtles
Paul Simon - Graceland
808 State - State Ritual
Redd Foxx - You Gotta Wash Your Ass
Stockhausen -- Kontakte
Cheap Trick -- In Color
Hamilton Bohannon -- Dance Your Ass Off

Slay me for the last two if you want, haters, but I'd bet most of our true favorites spring from our childhood and adolescence. Think hard: What was your favorite album when you were 16 years old? That's your favorite record of all time. If you say it's not, you're full of shit.

O'Connor (OConnorScribe), Monday, 26 June 2006 17:35 (nineteen years ago)

O'Connor OTM. I was 16 smack-dab in between Queen Is Dead and It Takes a Nation of Millions..., which are my dual faves.

Thomas Inskeep (submeat), Monday, 26 June 2006 17:40 (nineteen years ago)

"Think hard: What was your favorite album when you were 16 years old? That's your favorite record of all time."

there is more than a kernel of truth here, for the vast majority of us...

fleetwood mac - tusk
bread s/t
charalambides - market square
the dead c - harsh seventies reality
the shadow ring - lindus
pearls before swine - one nation underground
black sabbath s/t
west coast pop art experimental band - a child's guide to good & evil
the flying burrito brothers - the gilded palace of sin
damon - song of a gypsy

PREDICTABLE. I ONLY LIKED TWO (2) OF THESE RECORDS WHEN I WAS SIXTEEN. GUESS WHICH.

the eunuchs, Cassim and Mustafa, who guarded Abdur Ali's harem (orion), Monday, 26 June 2006 23:11 (nineteen years ago)

the eunuchs, Cassim and Mustafa, who guarded Abdur Ali's harem (orion), Monday, 26 June 2006 23:13 (nineteen years ago)

I wonder how our choices would change if we knew we were going to be alone on a desert island with these 10 choices for the rest of our lives. If you lean toward romantic songs, would it be to heavy to listen to these completely alone for the rest of your life? If you lean toward stupid/psychedelic nonsense, would it drive you insane to have the only "human contact" be voices of insane gobbledeegook?

Ya know, I always think about this. The albums I'd want with me on a desert island aren't necessarily going to be my "favorite" in the cold, calculated sense, culled from a list generated in the comfy confines of civilization. I would include albums that remind me of my childhood and my family, for sure. Something I don't really need to include (or listen to) here, today, surrounded by friends and family. The reason for listening to music becomes much different with only 10 choices, alone, forever. Perhaps I'd only want 10 CDR's of my loved ones voices and screw the pop music.

kickitcricket (kickitcricket), Monday, 26 June 2006 23:31 (nineteen years ago)

m. legrand - umbrellas of cherbourg original score
neutral milk hotel - in the aeroplane...
antony and the johnsons - i am a bird now
various - los viente del siglo viente: flamenco
bonnie prince billy- i see a darkness
mission of burma - Vs.
pere ubu - The Modern Dance
birthday party - junkyard
gang of four - Entertainment
iggy pop - the idiot
suspiria soundtrack
that's 11 but if forced to give 10 I'll flip a coin between the last 2. if forced to choose 10 to live with on a desert island, the 1st 5 would be there with me because they're about death and love and loss and being alive. i think the society-directed anger of the others might not translate well to the lonely sand.

davelus (davelus), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 00:23 (nineteen years ago)

When I think about the records I've listened to the most and know the best, it's probably these:

Pixies - Trompe Le Monde
Pavement - Slanted & Enchangted
Dead Kennedys - Plastic Surgery Disasters
A Tribe Called Quest - Midnight Marauders
De La Soul - 3 Feet High and Rising
Modest Mouse - Buidling Nothing Out Of Something (technically not an album...)
Fugazi - The Arguement
Prince - Purple Rain
Ween - The Mollusk

Tenth is probably Master of Puppets, Endtoducing, Being There, Cosmic Slop, Innervisions, Keep It Like A Secret, or maybe Loveless.

i am not going to lie about my favorite albums just to put a black artist on my list. (unless you count arthur lee)

t0dd swiss (immobilisme), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 02:49 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, man, stop holding t0dd swiss down!

Haikunym (Haikunym), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 02:51 (nineteen years ago)

Does Arthur Lee not normally count as black?

Shoes say, yeah, no hands clap your good bra. (goodbra), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 07:52 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, wrinklepaws! Twenty out of the first eighty (quick rough cut) that started this thread were black artists. I especially appreciated those lists where nine albums listed were justifiably popular choices and the poster would have Mingus, or De La, or PE dropped in the list.

I have no way of knowing what the racial mix on ilm is, I suspect it's predominantly white, but wtf? You excoriate and then are ecstatic for a Ben Folds? Where's the love for a black artist?

okay wrinklepaws was asking for it but WTF does this mean?

Haikunym (Haikunym), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 12:24 (nineteen years ago)

Okay, after sleeping on it a day, using the term "full of shit" and going off on Rockist was over the top. Out of character for me to be *that* pungently obnoxious -- must have been arsenic in my Wheaties or something. Apologies for endangering the thread and thwarting civility.

On a more positive note, there are some terrific, interesting lists here.

O'Connor (OConnorScribe), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 13:05 (nineteen years ago)

well played

that album's got a pretty ugly history.

Bea Arthur - Lost COmic GEnius ? (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 13:09 (nineteen years ago)

this thread is as pale as ILM's background color.

the ink is black, the page is white, together we...what was it again?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 13:10 (nineteen years ago)

together we...begin to fight...

hank (hank s), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 13:13 (nineteen years ago)

Very funny that someone went in and changed my list, btw. Though that Redd Foxx album certainly is funny as hell.

Probably had it coming to me ...

O'Connor (OConnorScribe), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 13:18 (nineteen years ago)

For reference, her's the original list

Computer Love
A Mark, A Mission, a Brand, a Scar
Life is...Too Short
Green Onions
Persepolis
The Mary Jane Girls
From the Roots to the Toota
Whipped Cream and Other Delights
Homotopy to Marie
Brown Sugar

O'Connor (OConnorScribe), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 13:20 (nineteen years ago)

Wow, my faux list has a twisted farcical brilliance to it. Can I keep it? Thanks much, ballbusting moderator.

O'Connor (OConnorScribe), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 13:22 (nineteen years ago)

OMG I totally know what's going on there

Haikunym (Haikunym), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 13:31 (nineteen years ago)

ha ha, we should edit everyone's lists

Konal Doddz (blueski), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 13:34 (nineteen years ago)

The switch-up and its context makes this thread the funniest damn thing I've read in a long, long time, even if the joke is sorta on me ...

... yeah, man, Dream of the Blue Turtles was dope when I was 16! :-)

O'Connor (OConnorScribe), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 13:36 (nineteen years ago)

ah, just thinking of Sting's early career reminds me that "Marsalis" rhymes with "phallus"

Haikunym (Haikunym), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 13:40 (nineteen years ago)

Hey, after all, if you love someone ...

O'Connor (OConnorScribe), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 13:41 (nineteen years ago)

The P5 album Matt likes is Happy End of the World. He listens to it while shoveling snow! (That's real snow, not Young Jeezy snow.) Others on his list are probably, I dunno, Gomez, Bersuit Vergarabat, shit like that.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 14:55 (nineteen years ago)

jaja, what part of (Jaymc not eligible.) didn't you understand?

Haikunym (Haikunym), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 15:05 (nineteen years ago)

The part where that was last night and nobody's bothered since then?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 15:06 (nineteen years ago)

nothing against you John but it's not really fair to pit your mutant abilities against mere mortals. plus you said 'shit like that' so now we got beef.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 15:08 (nineteen years ago)

IT'S ON NOW

Haikunym (Haikunym), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 15:08 (nineteen years ago)

Bea Arthur - Lost COmic GEnius ? (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 15:09 (nineteen years ago)

Haikunym, El Gran Silencio - somethingorother.

Are compilations/bestofs allowed? I don't see people listing them, but the instructions don't seem clear to me on that point.

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 15:11 (nineteen years ago)

You wanna do it in person this Friday, Matt?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 15:24 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, tell me about it. Literally: Tell me about it ... :-)

O'Connor (OConnorScribe), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 15:48 (nineteen years ago)

Now I like Dashboard Confessional and Field Mob? I learn more and more about my inner core every day ...

J: I'm still in limbo to see if I can get launched from home duty to come see youze guys, doing what I can; then it's ON like FULL HOUSE

Haikunym (Haikunym), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 15:58 (nineteen years ago)

But Full House was cancelled 11 years ago. :(

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 16:04 (nineteen years ago)

besides the clean, most of these albums are just randomly choosen from the artist's catalogue. its really way too hard to narrow it down this far.

silver jews – American water
pixies - doolittle
magnetic fields – 69 loves songs
velvet underground – loaded
the clean - anthology
talking heads - More Songs About Buildings and Food
beatles – abbey road
built to spill – there’s nothing wrong with love
modest mouse – lonesome crowded west
pavement- Slanted & Enchanted

regrettably out of room for… the smiths, the cure, m.ward and the first stone roses

marbles (marbles), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 16:07 (nineteen years ago)
