thank you sir, i've been meaning to start a patrick adams/leroy burgess thread for a while

jäxøñ (jaxon), Saturday, 24 June 2006 22:34 (nineteen years ago)

where's disco throwdown i ?

jäxøñ (jaxon), Saturday, 24 June 2006 22:38 (nineteen years ago)

donna vs diana

the fuckablity of late picasso (vahid), Saturday, 24 June 2006 22:45 (nineteen years ago)

giorgio moroder + patrick cowley

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 24 June 2006 23:05 (nineteen years ago)

why??

the fuckablity of late picasso (vahid), Saturday, 24 June 2006 23:11 (nineteen years ago)

i pick moroder/cowley also. there's a darkness to them that i love. and they synths. and the driving rhythm.

i'll go w/adams second. i really dig the jazzy synth shit, but it's a bit to squirly.

jäxøñ (jaxon), Saturday, 24 June 2006 23:17 (nineteen years ago)

i'll pick chic

the fuckablity of late picasso (vahid), Saturday, 24 June 2006 23:19 (nineteen years ago)

Edwards-Rodgers easy, followed closely by Moroder-Cowley, then Brown-Adams, with Ashford-Simpson last.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Saturday, 24 June 2006 23:21 (nineteen years ago)

haha yes!! diana ross, sister sledge AND duran duran!

the fuckablity of late picasso (vahid), Saturday, 24 June 2006 23:22 (nineteen years ago)

i'd put ashford + simpson in front of p + p just for "bourgie bourgie"

the fuckablity of late picasso (vahid), Saturday, 24 June 2006 23:23 (nineteen years ago)

i don't think i could pick peter brown out of a police line-up. i know he produced a lot of stuff, but damned if i can remember any of it. was there a soul jazz comp i missed or something? didn't he do lots of rap stuff too?

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 24 June 2006 23:24 (nineteen years ago)

he did "got to get your love", that's pretty classic. he did "atmosphere strut".

the fuckablity of late picasso (vahid), Saturday, 24 June 2006 23:25 (nineteen years ago)

he's been sort of overrated lately, i think because people discovered his stuff after years of obscurity and they were like "oh, wow, almost as good as prime disco stuff". it's not super super great but it's got a freshness to it.

also, like moroder + cowley it tends to mix w/ new stuff really easily compared to chic / a&s productions because it's much "trackier".

the fuckablity of late picasso (vahid), Saturday, 24 June 2006 23:27 (nineteen years ago)

man, i looked up patrick adams on discogs cuz he wasn't ringing a bell at all, and he had a hand in:

Bumblebee Unlimited, C# Sharp, Clair Hicks And Love Exchange, Cloud One, Mark IV, Musique, Phreek, Rainbow Brown, Sandy's Gang, Universal Robot Band, The, Wish (3)

i'll still take moroder anyday, but boy oh boy, i love a lot of that stuff! bumblebee unlimited is the best. and phreek! and universal robot band, well, say no more.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 24 June 2006 23:28 (nineteen years ago)

Vahid's last post is completely OTM.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Saturday, 24 June 2006 23:37 (nineteen years ago)

give me some chic trax to search out (or even albums?). i've never really gotten into them, but know people love them. the only album of theirs i bought was because robert wyatt covered a song.

jäxøñ (jaxon), Saturday, 24 June 2006 23:37 (nineteen years ago)

buy all their albums, jaxon. they are all a dollar and they are all worth your time.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 24 June 2006 23:41 (nineteen years ago)

Risque, C'est Chic, Real People, The Disco Years Vol. 4: Lost in Music, Sister Sledge's We Are Family

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Saturday, 24 June 2006 23:49 (nineteen years ago)

you need the diana ross stuff too.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 24 June 2006 23:50 (nineteen years ago)

heck, i'll take thor baldursson over ashford & simpson. not that i don't like them, and they were great songsmiths, but jeez...

case in point: the record store had all these records by the door that were going to the dump and amongst the refuse were 10 sealed ashford & simpson albums (their lawyer lived on the island and he croaked. great house. went to the estate sale) anyway, i brought them all home months ago and i STILL haven't opened one. and it aint' cuz i'm gonna be making any money off of them in the future.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 25 June 2006 00:00 (nineteen years ago)

hmmm ... some key chic productions:

chic - good times
chic - chic cheer
chic - le freak
envers du plan - i want your love
diana ross - upside down
diana ross - i'm coming out
sister sledge - the greatest dancer
sister sledge - we are family
sister sledge - lost in music
david bowie - let's dance
madonna - material girl
madonna - dress you up
duran duran - reflex
duran duran - notorious
robert palmer - didn't mean to turn you on
jody watley - don't you want me
ABC - when smokey sings

and let's not forget these guys were a HUGE influence on the sound of bobby watson, nate edmonds, jam & lewis, teddy riley, etc

the fuckablity of late picasso (vahid), Sunday, 25 June 2006 00:01 (nineteen years ago)

i don't dig 80's chic/niles at all. i thought like a virgin was such a bummer production-wise. i never have to hear let's dance again. or those duran duran singles. or the abc single. or the robert palmer single.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 25 June 2006 00:14 (nineteen years ago)

nile.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 25 June 2006 00:15 (nineteen years ago)

yes, of course, Diana, how could I forget.

hmmm. that reminds me, Ashford & Simpson did a lot of her really good disco work, didn't they? I might bump them a notch for that. Might.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Sunday, 25 June 2006 00:17 (nineteen years ago)

robert palmer - didn't mean to turn you on

bzzzt. Jam/Lewis

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Sunday, 25 June 2006 00:18 (nineteen years ago)

the jellybean dress you up remixes are cool by me though.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 25 June 2006 00:20 (nineteen years ago)

upside down and i'm coming out might be it for me and chic. and they are both BRILLIANT, so, you know, no hating. i don't think i ever heard any 80's sister sledge albums.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 25 June 2006 00:25 (nineteen years ago)

uh ... matos, the info i have is written by jam + lewis, produced by bernie edwards!

the fuckablity of late picasso (vahid), Sunday, 25 June 2006 00:26 (nineteen years ago)

haha you're right! it was on that 4CD Jam/Lewis promo-only box I had and I'd assumed they produced it; now I'm remembering the box was of J/L compositions. (it was an EMI publishing thing.)

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Sunday, 25 June 2006 00:27 (nineteen years ago)

anyway maybe it's only an executive producer credit or something and jam & lewis did the arrangement too (it's so so hard to place the credit on these things) but it underscores the active influence chic had on 80s r+b production.

the fuckablity of late picasso (vahid), Sunday, 25 June 2006 00:28 (nineteen years ago)

i listened to c'est chic today and had to skip a few of the tracks because they're such wedding songs. i don't ever wanna hear more than half of those songs you listed EVER again, vahid

jäxøñ (jaxon), Sunday, 25 June 2006 00:29 (nineteen years ago)

played in the last hour at my place: "girls just wanna have fun", "good vibrations" (marky mark, not beach boys), "you spin me right round", "pump up the jam", "too sex for my shirt", "gonna make you sweat", "groove is in the heart", "can't touch this", "situation"

sort of an atypical afternoon but just to give you an idea of my high tolerance for cheese.

the fuckablity of late picasso (vahid), Sunday, 25 June 2006 00:34 (nineteen years ago)

anyway, weddings are fun!

the fuckablity of late picasso (vahid), Sunday, 25 June 2006 00:34 (nineteen years ago)

all of those songs, er, except for marky mark, are better than when smokey sings, the duran duran singles, the jody watley, and the robert palmer. and material girl. if not dress you up and the 70's chic stuff. and the two diana singles from 1980.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 25 June 2006 00:39 (nineteen years ago)

possible thread idea: is "groove is in the heart" disco or house?

the fuckablity of late picasso (vahid), Sunday, 25 June 2006 00:41 (nineteen years ago)

it's actually not as disco as some other songs on that deelite album. but my memory is really foggy. groove is in the heart is kinda all over the place.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 25 June 2006 00:46 (nineteen years ago)

it is its own genre.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 25 June 2006 00:46 (nineteen years ago)

i pic chic

breakfast pants (disco stu), Sunday, 25 June 2006 00:53 (nineteen years ago)

some of those may be wedding songs, but there's a real darkness lurking underneath a lot of chic productions.

breakfast pants (disco stu), Sunday, 25 June 2006 00:59 (nineteen years ago)

darkness is the wrong word. they helped to invent the wryness that's taken for granted in a lot of modern shiny music.

breakfast pants (disco stu), Sunday, 25 June 2006 01:04 (nineteen years ago)

Back to the Adams and Brown thing, I'm not sure who was responsible but part of my increased interest in them recently is this certain farty/squirty/squiggly/wah-wah synth sound that can be heard in Atmosphere Strut, parts of the Bumblebee Unlimited album, and also Making Love by the Universal Robot Band (and perhaps on some Inner Life stuff too). It is very identifiable and unique and very, very appealing to me. But in my head I've either attached it to Adams and Brown or Greg Carmichael cause wasn't he associated with a fair amount of their work too? Someone help me. Who's responsible? What exactly is it? And please tell me where I can hear more of it. If you don't know exactly what I'm talking about it's prominent pretty much from the start of Making Love and Atmosphere Strut (especially during the long instrumental passages).

matt2 (matt2), Sunday, 25 June 2006 01:32 (nineteen years ago)

that's exactly the sound i'm talking about here: i'll go w/adams second. i really dig the jazzy synth shit, but it's a bit too squirly.

jäxøñ (jaxon), Sunday, 25 June 2006 03:22 (nineteen years ago)

That's Patrick Adams on synths. It was his "signature" on most disco productions he was involved with.

There's a great interview in one of the last magazine issues of "Keep On" that's worth tracking down.

My fite pics: Adams/Brown//Moroder/Cowley//Rodgers/Edwards//Ashford/Wha??

Jay Vee's Return (Manon_69), Sunday, 25 June 2006 10:11 (nineteen years ago)

speaking of Chic don't foget the Soup For One soundtrack

Ashford & Simpson are worth re-investigating. try Send It, So So Satisfied, Stay Free. they're solid. AS A ROCK...

much as I love disco I've never been able to fully connect and bond(musically)w/Sylvester. "do you wanna fonk" excepted. why is this?

m coleman (lovebug starski), Sunday, 25 June 2006 10:19 (nineteen years ago)

amyl nitrite helps with sylvester-love. i'm actually more a fan of patrick cowley's solo robot disco. it is very entertaining. mind warp, megatron man, etc..

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 25 June 2006 10:24 (nineteen years ago)

adams/burgess if for no reason but they're slightly obscure ie so many records so little known which means(for me)- - new stuff. even tho its old.(rather hear a new record than an old one)(sometimes)

molly (bulbs), Sunday, 25 June 2006 10:27 (nineteen years ago)

Thanks Jay Vee, do you have a link for that article?

matt2 (matt2), Sunday, 25 June 2006 19:30 (nineteen years ago)

Matt, I have the print edition of the Patrick Adams issue but I don't believe they ever posted it online.

Jay Vee's Return (Manon_69), Sunday, 25 June 2006 20:52 (nineteen years ago)

i feel kinda dumb that i've slept on Peter Brown for so long. i heard "Do you wanna get funky with me" over at bumrocks a while ago and really dug it. i picked up Fantasy Love Affair today and realized i'd seen that record a buncha times and never picked it up. it's pretty awesome. funky, synthy disco but with this sorta proggy/soft pop edge to it. kinda like if you threw a buncha Manfred Mann, Steely Dan & Crosby Stills and Nash on top of a disco record. so weird.

does he really have anything to do with Patrick Adams as they were grouped together upthread, or was it supposed to be Leroy Burgess?

flëétwøöd måçk (jaxon), Thursday, 29 June 2006 02:12 (nineteen years ago)

they were in a band together and they ran a label together.

the fuckablity of late picasso (vahid), Thursday, 29 June 2006 02:21 (nineteen years ago)

patrick adams & peter brown, but nile rodgers & bernard edwards is a close second.

does he really have anything to do with Patrick Adams as they were grouped together upthread, or was it supposed to be Leroy Burgess?
P&P Records was their label. While they did not do every production together, they did many. Leroy Burgess was a session vocalist on many of their recordings like Dazzle, Phreak, Universal Robot Band, etc. However, Patrick Adams did a lot of productions with Greg Carmichael (including the incredibly awesome Donna McGhee album), so maybe he should be added to the team.

(As you might be able to tell, I was a little obsessed a few years back.)

William Selman (William Selman), Thursday, 29 June 2006 02:24 (nineteen years ago)

xpost - alright, well then we're talking about two different disco peter browns.
http://www.discogs.com/artist/Peter+Brown+(2)

flëétwøöd måçk (jaxon), Thursday, 29 June 2006 02:24 (nineteen years ago)

rodgers/edwards>moroder/cowley>brown/adams>ashford/simpson but really it's like tiny tiny tiny margins between the first 3. all pretty unfuckwithable obv.

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 29 June 2006 02:43 (nineteen years ago)

Chic for me.

deej.. (deej..), Thursday, 29 June 2006 03:52 (nineteen years ago)

I'm struggling to verbalize why, but something about the way they locked in made the groove seem perfectly effortlessly perfect. I like Blount's order but I'm not as familiar w/ brown/adams as I should be. Bourgie Bourgie makes me want to put A/S after M/C.

deej.. (deej..), Thursday, 29 June 2006 03:56 (nineteen years ago)

Nile and 'Nard, DUH. And m coleman OTM - the Soup for One soundtrack features one of their greatest productions ever, Carly Simon's "Why" - criminally peaked at #41 U.S. but was a hit in the U.K. The 12" version is amazing, like an alternate-universe version of Chic with Carly on leads.

Thomas Inskeep (submeat), Thursday, 29 June 2006 17:20 (nineteen years ago)

Ha! Soup for One, anyone?

Thomas Inskeep (submeat), Thursday, 29 June 2006 17:26 (nineteen years ago)

Now you're gonna make me bid. Look at that list of artists. Fonzi Thornton!!!

matt2 (matt2), Thursday, 29 June 2006 17:29 (nineteen years ago)

If you win it, matt, can you burn it onto a CD for me?

Thomas Inskeep (submeat), Thursday, 29 June 2006 17:32 (nineteen years ago)

Speaking of Chic: anyone heard the new Vandross single, "Shine"? Apparently Jam & Lewis sampled "My Forbidden Lover" for it, so naturally I'm curious.

Thomas Inskeep (submeat), Thursday, 29 June 2006 17:33 (nineteen years ago)

One of the highlights of my short lived career as a studio engineer was doing a vocal session for some commercial with Fonzi Thornton, Tawatha Agee and Vaneese Thomas . They were pretty shocked and delighted at my gushing fanboyness. Fonzi is especially cool.

Jay Vee's Return (Manon_69), Thursday, 29 June 2006 17:41 (nineteen years ago)

Thomas I still don't have the facilities to rip vinyl, infortunately. Plus, wifey might not like me exceeding my monthly music allowance. Anybody heard any of the other tracks, though? What about the Teddy P?

matt2 (matt2), Thursday, 29 June 2006 17:56 (nineteen years ago)

That'd be unfortunately.

matt2 (matt2), Thursday, 29 June 2006 18:43 (nineteen years ago)

one month passes...
Carly Simon's "Why" is SOOOOOOOOO FUCKING GOOD!

does any of Chic's other stuff sound like this? i don't remember anything else resembling this at all.

jaxon (jaxon), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 21:55 (nineteen years ago)

^^ sampled by ATCG (bonita applebum, i think)

mentalismé (sanskrit), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 22:52 (nineteen years ago)

u know, that's what they say (think it was even on a tribe's vibes album), but i just listened to both back to back and don't hear it.
