"Oh, NOW I hate it!" - acts that you only couldn't stand way after everyone else liked 'em.

The Pixies

When I turned 21 and started going to bars regularly (especially after moving to New York City), I realized that I hate the Pixies. Every god damn jukebox in the city has Doolittle on it.

Coincidentally, my favorite bartender has a no Pixies policy.

Hm, the "way" in the topic could be ommitted.

i feel like it should be "acts that you only couldn't stand way after everyone else hated them."

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Sunday, 25 June 2006 14:27 (nineteen years ago)

but yeah, the pixies. i thought i was done having to tolerate that shit in the early 90s.

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Sunday, 25 June 2006 14:27 (nineteen years ago)

To be fair, the Pixies are usually your only choice if you're at a bar with a RAD PUNK ROCK JUKEBOX and you don't want to hear something crappy.

I think it was a combination of disliking their new album and their ever enlarging acclaim, but Broken Social Scene. The new album was a mess for me, and not in a good way.

Abba.

When they were going, everyone had kinda respect for their hitmaking style and prowess.

From Elvis Costello to Glen Matlock, all admitted to nicking bits off them. Reportedly, Sid Vicious chased them at an airport for their autographs. And I quite liked them when singles came out, but not enough to actually buy one.

And then it happened, ten years after, at a Abba Tribute show. "Money Money Waterloo I do I do SOS dancing queen summer time mother know" AARGH! I DON'T LIKE THIS!!! TAKE IT AWAY!!!

This is a "I hate the Pixies because they're on a lot of jukeboxes" thread? Worth fucking while.

man, i still love the Pixies but i totally sympathise.

my pick is The Clash, sort of.

i love their first album, and bits from stuff afterwards but i can't stand hearing about how great they were compared to the rest of the "Class of '77", especially from people younger than me.

"Man the Clash were sooooo much better than the fuckin' Pistols, man. They were a REAL band." (the same guy who said this to me then suddenly started ranting out an unsolicited diatribe against John Cage...)

sorry man, but London Calling is "decent" at best, maybe. there's more filler in that album than a pinata.

Pixies aren't so good for a jukebox, that I can see. Reminds me that I haven't been in a bar with a jukebox in a couple years now-- maybe there is something to this "getting old" business.

Mark (MarkR), Monday, 26 June 2006 10:05 (nineteen years ago)

Last time I saw a jukebox, it was one of those 'page through the CD covers / tina turner back catalogue' flippy things.

Nirvana. I just never got it. I was bored by them WAAAYYY before everyone else started complaining about "Grunge Boutiques" at Macy's.

Custard Subsidence (kate), Monday, 26 June 2006 10:15 (nineteen years ago)

Led Zeppelin
Bob Dylan
Jimi Hendrix
The Smiths
Radiohead
Cat Power

Oh, and music. I fucking hate that shit. At first, I was like, "oh, wow, music is AMAZING! And it sounds even better when you're HIGH!"

But then everybody else started getting into it, and I couldn't go anywhere without hearing it.

In stores: music.
On TV: music.
At other people's houses: music.
While making babies: music.

Fuck that shit. I'm into smells.

you rebels

Tom Waits. I find him tolerable for about three or four songs max, though I did like Bone Machine and Mule Variations. But the drunken cabaret stuff just bores me shitless, and the drunken circus music isn't nearly as clever as everyone seems to credit him for.

js (honestengine), Monday, 26 June 2006 14:46 (nineteen years ago)

Shouldn't this be every indie kid and every indie album ever?

Example:

1. Pitchfork gives album a 9
2. Indie kid buys album the same day
3. One week later 50,000 other indie kids see 9 and buy album
4. Original indie kid hates album because he is no longer edgy

My bartender has a no "Ring Of Fire" policy.

brg30 (brg30), Monday, 26 June 2006 21:47 (nineteen years ago)

I agree on Tom Waits, I sort of like a few songs, and Bone Machine sounds cool, but otherwise.. no, and a lot of my friends are big fans.

I like the Pixies though
