Hello everyone.
There is this fantastic excerpt of a latin song that you can hear on this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVIDBfBzqgo&search=oliver%20paredes

supposedly by Los Van Van and named Guaguanco. i eventually got the song from the user that posted the video in my inbox, but the version that you hear on this link is much much more energizing than the one i got! so if anyone knows where can i find that (perhaps live?) version (i couldn't find it on AMG...)? Thank you in advance!!

You might want to try the Yahoo Cuban music group, or the Yahoo Timba Geeks group or even rec.music.afro-latin (not to disuade you from posting here in general, but as one of the Latin music "experts," I would guess nobody who regularly posts here will know this--including me, since I don't follow Los Van Van very closely).

Or even dissuade you.

Okay now that I've actually heard the video clip (couldn't at work), it's not too easy to even hear it. Even so, you may have introduced me to the fourth Los Van Van song I actually like, because I like it, from what little I can hear of it. How about asking Kevin Moore at timba.com?

glad you like it. OK, i'll contact kevin then, hope he won't mind. ;)

I don't know him personally, except for some e-mail exchange a long time ago that grew out of a newsgroup discussion of timba (and he was willing to take the time to tailor recommendations to me despite my openly stating I hadn't liked most of the timba I'd heard), but he seems very approachable. I know a couple people who know him. If you don't hear back from him, it's probably just because he's very busy, with a hand in lots of projects at one time (in addition to the website).

seven years pass...

A joke known in Havana and in Miami’s Cuban community may start making the rounds again, tinged with sadness this time, as fans and fellow artists mourn the loss of Juan Formell, the founder of Cuba’s 45-year-old dance band Los Van Van. The story goes that years from now, Fidel Castro comes back from the dead in search of his legacy. He finds the entry for his name in an encyclopedia: “Fidel Castro Ruz, Cuban politician in the era of Los Van Van.”
