Bands/songs/labels in Canadian drag?

I'm trying to think of bands, labels, songs, etc. from outside Canada that have prominent Canadian references. Some obvious ones - Boards of Canada, Of Montreal, Secretly Canadian Records, Low's song "Canada," Mark Robinson's band Flin Flon (which has tons of Canada place-name songs), the newer California band named Halifax, that Icelandic band with the untypable name that had a song called "Canada Oh Canada."

Others?

There's a band called "Canada" from Michigan: http://www.thecanadianfront.com/

Canada Briggs and Her Problems Down There. More of a non-band than an actual band but it fits in to your "etc" category.

Please tell me this is not going to be the basis of an article in the Globe....it's not that great of an idea.

I'm afraid it is - it's just a what-the-hell-it's-Canada-Day topic for this wknd. I have a mild ambition to figure out what "Canada" is being used to stand for, but it's light stuff.

Pernice Brothers, which makes sense since Joe Pernice married a Canadian and relocated to the Toronto area.

Binjominia (Brilhante), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 21:28 (nineteen years ago)

Okay, I'll give you a pass - after all Canada Day is the fluffiest day of the year in the Canadian press.

neko case - canadian amp (a cd of covers of songs by canadian singers). Of course, she is an honorary canadian.

I recall His Name is Alive have a song called "My Canada" but I can't remember what it's off.

From Atlanta, Hampton Grease Band: Song called "Halifax"; another song ("Six") ends with lyric "Canadian stamp and asses ream" (I think.) Also, when playing live, used to warn their American audiences about the imminent invasion of the USA by Portugal (via Canada!?!).

Jesse Winchester, real-life draft dodger in exile in Montreal, writes a coupla songs about (guess what) how c-c-cold he is.
2nd album titled Third Down, 110 To Go: Referring to CANADIAN football and it's minor differences between the USA variety. Later becomes a real bonafide Canadian citizen.

nazareth 'vancouver shakedown'
motley crue 'girls girls girls' ("body shop, marble arch")
chicago 'flight 602' ("canada is so far from where you want to be")

"Boy From Canada" by Jane Vs World is about Australian teenage girls pulling teenage Canadian blokes on Livejournal.

i think this is mostly because adding "american" to something just feels gross and has too much baggage right now.

see, everything comes down to america.

oh right, Silver Jews have a song off of one of their first singles called "Canada". I recall nothing about the song other than "can-uh-duhhhhhh" repeated over and over again in the chorus.

Jacobo Rock (jacobo rock), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 12:48 (nineteen years ago)

Frank Black has the really nice "Manitoba" on his Show Me Your Tears album of a few yrs back (right before Pixies reunion).
Minor Thirds seconded.
Handsome Dick Manitoba

Oh yeah, and Burl Ives' "Saskatoon Saskatchewan" is, like, so massively misrepresentative of the city founded as a Temperence Colony that it's doubly awesome.

"oh canada" by the blow

If we're going waay back then I nominate "Canada In Springtime" by the Free Design. Chris Dedrick of the Free Design also scored such Canadian "classics" as "Emily of New Moon", "Road To Avonlea" and such like.

Anybody who ever covered Joni Mitchell.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 15:07 (nineteen years ago)

An obvious one: (Carly Simon's) "You're So Vain" has a line about going to Nova Scotia to see the total eclipse of the sun. It's not Canadian drag in the same way as a Scottish group calling themselves Boards of Canada though.

Sundar (sundar), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 17:10 (nineteen years ago)

I'll tell you the same songs I posted on that other message board for you:
Manada (b/w Hockey Hair) - Pansy Division
Blame Canada - South Park The Movie
Rocky Mountian Suite (Cold Nights In Canada) - John Denver
Halifax - The Pills

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 18:19 (nineteen years ago)

Pilot (of "Magic" fame) - "Canada"

Look out California
Ooh-ooh, I gotta warn ya
Here comes Canada

Canada,
You got an open door
You got so many things
I swear I never saw them before
So much more
You got a world in store
Got a home from home
Got a home so strong
Can't seem to ignore

Look out California
Ooh-ooh, I gotta warn ya
Here comes Canada

Canada,
You've proved your worth
You got snow peaked mountains tumbling down
You've had them from birth
Say it clear
So the world can hear
I swear I never left you without shedding a tear

Look out California
Ooh-ooh, I gotta warn ya
Here comes Canada

"It's not Canadian drag in the same way as a Scottish group calling themselves Boards of Canada though. "

Incidentally, there's WAAAAAY more Canadian bands pretending to be Scottish than vice versa. Of course it's all totally off the mark, the thinking being that punk rock + kilts = Authentic Scottish Awesomeness

everything (everything), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 19:27 (nineteen years ago)

We have a province called Nova Scotia with a few hundred thousand people running around pretending to be Celts. Of course we have more bands pretending to be Scottish.

field mice 'canada' though i am not sure what the song has to do with canada. maybe the guy stealing his girl is canadian? or it could be a metaphor for the us-canadian relationship and bob is canada, the girl is the U.S. and "he" is another country like say Japan. it was voted like second or third best song on sarah ever a long time ago by the indiepop list, i think, if i remember right 'drown' won.
