Nurse With Wound's "A Piece Of The Sky Is Missing" - played it on 33 for years, finally heard a CD version and realized it was supposed to be 45.

Tony Moraz' "No Sleep Tonight" on 45 instead of 33.

Herr Fahrstuhl (Herr Fahrstuhl), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 08:17 (nineteen years ago)

hell i can't believe there's a thread about this.

there's this amazing song (so i thought) by BOY KILL BOY which was stuck to the front of NME on a cd this month. the song was a 'demo' (which sounded supiciously tight and polished for a demo but anyway) called KILLER. gosh it's a peak-period PLACEBO-esque sprightly, vocally high pitched, *driven* little number i thought until i clocked that i'd nudged the cd deck to about 4.5 by accident as opposed to 0.0. flipped it to normal speed and ho hum, it's just an ordinary mid decade run o' the mill indie thing.

there's this bit in frank n bill's book HOW TO DJ (PROPERLY) wherein the posit the notion that any song sped to over 4.0 sounds terrible.
it's balderdash, as we sem to be proving here.

hell i can't believe there's a thread about this.

Now there's (at least) 3:
better at the 'wrong' speed
Vinyl played at the wrong Rpm. C or D

A lot of people played "Brown Reason To Live" (aka s/t) at 33 and weren't quite sure if it was right or wrong, since it also sounded sort of "wrong" played at 45, too. People got so used to playing it at 33 that they preferred that sound, as you can see by the Amazon reviews of the CD re-release. Some reviewers are genuinely confused or upset that they changed the speed. :-)

Haha, I knew you were going to come on this thread and mention that EP. I just sent for a copy of the reissue, btw. I've never heard the record before.

Marmot 4-Tay: forth-coming, my child. forth-coming most righteous champion (mar, Wednesday, 28 June 2006 11:05 (nineteen years ago)

It's on eMusic! (And so is Chrome Box!)

The good thing about the reissue are the extra live tracks and the live pcppep. For me, that stuff outweighs the 1st album, but I can see why they used the classic 1st album cover art.

John E. Smoke (Uri Frendimein), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 11:14 (nineteen years ago)

I'm on dialup on a shit computer right now, otherwise I would use eMusic and iTunes and all that.

I've never accidently listened to a whole record at the wrong speed, but there are some individual songs that sound fucked up at either speed so I experimented with going back and forth with them. For example, one was a Butthole Surfers song on Pioughd, and another was a GbV song on Tigerbomb. I'm sure you'd know which ones I mean if you heard them but I can't be arsed to remember the titles at the moment.

Whoever did the Butthole page at Wikipedia lists everything up to Hairway as: "Vinyl version can be played at 33 1/3 RPM, or 45 rpm." I guess Jimi would sound pretty ridiculous shifted down to an even lower pitch.

I clearly remember being so happy as a 9th grader about to show my Cure-loving girlfriend my brand new "Psychic, Powerless" tape and when I put it in thinking, "What the fuck? This sounds like shit!" We didn't even listen to all of side one because it was just intolerable. I remember just totally not comprehending why anyone would make something so sloppy and horrible. If it was on vinyl, I probably would've tried a different speed. When I listen to it now, I have trouble understanding what seemed so wrong with it back then.

John E. Smoke (Uri Frendimein), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 11:41 (nineteen years ago)

Heared "The only one I know" 12" single Charlatans played at 33rpm. One excellent slow groove.

play Liquid Liquid's "Scraper" at 33 instead of 45, sounds great.

Somehow, this happened to me recently with a streaming MP3 (!!!) on Hype Machine. Some random mp3 blog had some random solo acoustic Death Cab For Cutie song (ugh, I know), and I thought they had intentionally chipmunked the singer's voice for comedic purposes. But then when I went to play it for one of my friends it was just the normal song. Very weird.

Earlier this year, I got a promo copy of the 10" for Arctic Monkey's "Bet you Look Good on the Dancefloor". I hadn't heard them, but had seen their name bandied about a whole lot. I put the 10" on, scratched my head for a while about 33 or 45, and settled on 33. It sounded like a Britpop version of High on Fire and I started getting really excited. Then the vocals came in and I knew I was wrong. I restarted it at 45 and I've been scratching my head as to why anybody cares about them ever since.

When I got a copy of First Nation's first 7", I played it at 33. It was okay, but mostly just sounded like a bunch of dudes moaning. Then I read the press kit, saw that the band was all female and switched it to a 45. Much better as intended.

Ed Corcoran (ecorcoran), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 12:47 (nineteen years ago)

I remember picking up the Butthole's PCPPEP when it came out and loving how sludged-up and malevolent it sounded. It was at least a year before I heard anything else by the band, and realised it should be played on 45 (I assumed they had processed the vocals and such to sound as it did - silly 11 year old!!). I still like it better on 33.

EZ Snappin (EZSnappin), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 13:12 (nineteen years ago)

Aaaargh! All my Buttholes records are in storage, and it will be six weeks before I can find out if I listened to them at the wrong speed for all those years. Though it says something about them as a band that that would be ENTIRELY credible.

Soukesian (Soukesian), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 16:53 (nineteen years ago)

Microdisney's "We Hate You South African Bastards" was labeled "45 RPM," but this sounded sort of fast. However, when played at 33 RPM, it sounded way too slow - Cathal's deep and lumbering vocals played a role in this, as did the high percentage of instrumentals. I still reckon the record was meant to be played at 38 RPM.

Dee Xtrovert (dee dee), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 17:42 (nineteen years ago)

I still have no idea whether Teen Anthem's "I Hate The Beatles" is supposed to be played at 33 or 45.

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 17:47 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe one day they will be deluxely reissued with 2 discs at different speeds... by Rykodisc.

John E. Smoke (Uri Frendimein), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 18:09 (nineteen years ago)

Bought "In God We Trust, Inc" in 1983, figuring it was the next step since I was enjoying the Sex Pistols and Clash so much. I'd never actually heard the DKs. I played it at 33 for a while, until I heard "We've got a bigger problem now" on the college station. I couldn't believe the record was supposed to be faster, and that the singer of such an infamous band would have such a squeeky voice.

bendy (bendy), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 19:18 (nineteen years ago)

eh?

"spaceman" by Babylon Zoo. Not 'cos I ever played it at the wrong speed but 'cos the song actually starts at the wrong speed and then slows down, thus becoming shite.

babysquid (babysquid), Friday, 30 June 2006 06:02 (nineteen years ago)

Right now I recall the "Seven Ways To Love" (Cola Boy) 7" played at 33 sounded awsome!

daavid (daavid), Friday, 30 June 2006 19:10 (nineteen years ago)

Sort of related: I once played Metal Machine Music backwards and at half speed...and it actually sounded like it was made by guitars for the first time ever.

ten years pass...

I've been playing the new EP by Peter Zummo at 33 instead of 45 and wouldn't have noticed it was at the wrong speed if I hadn't seen someone mention it on Twitter :s

It sounds good at both speeds tbh imho

paolo, Saturday, 17 September 2016 17:05 (nine years ago)

There's a Dropdead album - the one that plays from the center label out - that's way better at 33

Wimmels, Saturday, 17 September 2016 17:44 (nine years ago)

Cocteau Twins Victorialand - Played Side 1 at 33, thought it was amazing, went to flip the record and saw "45" on the label, played it at 45, it was still amazing.

Hideous Lump, Saturday, 17 September 2016 19:28 (nine years ago)

The first SYR Records release — the red one; Anagrama I think it was called. Anyway, played it on 33 and was like, "Whoa" then I saw it was supposed to be played at 45. Wasn't as weird or interesting at the right speed for whatever reason.

Austin, Sunday, 18 September 2016 05:53 (nine years ago)

I've got a friend who had a vinyl copy of Omni Trio's Only Angels Cast Shadows, and he couldn't decide if it sounded better on 33 or 45. I'm sure I could figure it out for him now.

Are friends eligible for this thread?

Tom Violence, Sunday, 18 September 2016 06:00 (nine years ago)

one year passes...

Had the opposite experience of this with my copy of Sun Ra's Lanquidity, as the repress I have is 45. I just assumed it was a more mellow and 'languid' outing (and that that was the point). I have to admit it's pretty brilliant now that I've finally figured out how to listen to it.

Federico Boswarlos, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 14:43 (eight years ago)

Always listened to, and loved, Completely Dusted by Deathly Fighter at 45. Wanted to play it for a friend once and pulled up the YouTube, which also has it at 45, with the lone comment being from a band member saying it’s a 33. Still better at 45.

Yep - I played Victorialand by the Cocteau Twins on 33 for a few weeks in high school when I first picked it up.

I enjoyed slowing down Loop- Guilded Eternity awhile back

global tetrahedron, Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:15 (eight years ago)

I'm not sure if this is well known, but the Severed Heads track 'Dead Eyes Opened' sounds far superior at 33 (and pitched a bit up) instead of its 45 speed.

Federico Boswarlos, Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:20 (eight years ago)

Ha yes I've done an instrumental edit of "dead eyes opened" that slows it down like that

brimstead, Thursday, 25 January 2018 16:23 (eight years ago)

First knowingly heard the Germs at much too slow a speed (quickly corrected), at someone's else. Was pretty disappointed with them at normal speed.

Salt Lake City Motorcycle Accident Nerve Damage Lawyer (_Rudipherous_), Thursday, 25 January 2018 16:26 (eight years ago)

I listened to side one of Alice Coltrane's Universal Consciousness on 45 instead of 33 by accident and it was amazing.
