And I thought Lou had lost his sense of humour

TS: Alan Stivell - A l'Olympia vs. Magma - Live/Hhaï (Dada), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 09:14 (nineteen years ago)

He almost looks like Cheech Marin in the first one.

Oh get out of here, Lou used to be hilarious

you can be funny w/o having a sense of humor (about yourself)

I love Lou's music and laugh at his (old)interviews but ask anyone who's interviewed him...he's a monumentally self-serious prick.

m coleman (lovebug starski), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 09:43 (nineteen years ago)

Well he is now and has been for years, we all know what

¡Vamos a matar, Dadaismus! (Dada), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 09:45 (nineteen years ago)

In the first photo he kinda looks like a mustachioed Pablo Picasso. In the second he looks like.....Lou Reed with a mullet.

Ben Crazee (Ben Crazee), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 11:04 (nineteen years ago)

He reminds me a bit of Van Heflin in the 2nd photo (if Van Heflin had had black hair)

¡Vamos a matar, Dadaismus! (Dada), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 11:13 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, but Pablo Picasso never got called an asshole. Didn't Burroughs once describe Lou as "a bovine idiot" or something?

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 11:22 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, but Burroughs...I love the guy, but there's a part in Literary Outlaw (this is just from memory) where he's going off on a Lou Reed lyric that he totally misinterpreted and it makes Old Bull look a bit silly. It's the "Hey white boy, what you doing uptown...chasing our women around" part in "Heroin", and Bill is making fun of it saying "Well one thing a junkie would definitely not be doing is chasing black women around, Lou doesn't know what he's talking about etc. etc.", when the next line is "Pardon me sir, it's furthest from my mind". I mean, try and keep up Bill.

Well Lou was in one of his fat beer-drinking periods at the time - his Fat Velvet period, one might say

¡Vamos a matar, Dadaismus! (Dada), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 11:43 (nineteen years ago)

I meant "I'm Waiting For The Man", of course. ;)
See, we can all use a bit of help keeping up sometimes.

Marmot 4-Tay: forth-coming, my child. forth-coming most righteous champion (mar, Wednesday, 28 June 2006 11:47 (nineteen years ago)

Paraphrased:

Lou: "This band is the most wonderful rock and roll band, I'm gonna call them New York!"
Allan Jones (interviewer): "um, that's a bit precious, innit?"
Lou: "precious? PRECIOUS!!? Well maybe I should call them MUTTON THEN!! EH!! EH???"

See, funny w/o having a sense of humor (about yourself)

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 11:50 (nineteen years ago)

I wish I could Google that photo of Bill with the Fat Lou at the Bunker so I could add the caption:

Lou: "William, It Was Really Nothing"
WSB: "You're the One For Me, Fatty"

I don't get this "not having a sense of humour about yourself" bit, it hardly means you don't have a sense of humour does it?

¡Vamos a matar, Dadaismus! (Dada), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 11:59 (nineteen years ago)

Wouldn't any self-consciously cool New Yorker who sports a mullet necessarily have to have a healthy sense of irony? Or is Lou's an unironic mullet?

Jacobo Rock (jacobo rock), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 13:27 (nineteen years ago)

I blame Bono

¡Vamos a matar, Dadaismus! (Dada), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 13:29 (nineteen years ago)

I think he looks like Hank Azaria.

"Take No Prisoners" is ample enough evidence that Lou Reed has a sense of humor.

2nd pic has got to be Bruce Willis

Well, that pic's from the 80s, isn't it?

Sundar (sundar), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 17:11 (nineteen years ago)

(I've never found Lou all that funny though, with one or two exceptions: his vocal cameos in "Lady Godiva's Operation," which I assume are intentionally funny and a couple lines on Take No Prisoners.)

Sundar (sundar), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 17:12 (nineteen years ago)

his vocal cameos in "Lady Godiva's Operatio,"

Those always make me laugh -- the way his voice blurts in way too loud and off-key: "--SWEETLY!... --NEATLY COMPAAAAAARE!" (or however it goes).

I've never those were meant to be funny, though; just something that didn't work out quite right.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 17:22 (nineteen years ago)

man i LOVE those vocals interjections, they totally work and are my fave part of the song! not working out right = honor the hidden intention, art as irritant etc

You're all wrong. The second photo is Joe Piscopo.

Dan Heilman (The Deacon), Thursday, 29 June 2006 13:21 (nineteen years ago)

Should we make like Eddie Murphy and ask Lou?

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 29 June 2006 13:27 (nineteen years ago)

On American Poet where the interviewer asks him "Where's Doug Yule?" and Lou says "Dead, I hope" -- that's HILARIOUS.

ghost dong (Sonny A.), Thursday, 29 June 2006 14:43 (nineteen years ago)

Was that the one where he sort of defends Doug by saying "I can say that, you can't" ?

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 29 June 2006 15:10 (nineteen years ago)

"I went to high school with Doug Yule, you can't say that!"

He also quibbles with the interviewer over the pronunciation of "era" before making the pun "an era of corn."

ghost dong (Sonny A.), Thursday, 29 June 2006 16:26 (nineteen years ago)

Lou 1: Who is it?

Lou 2: It's me, Lou.

Lou 1: Lou's not here man....
