I didn't understand a second of 2046 but I kept watching because of the wonderful soundtrack. There are many many bits of music from Japanese and Korean films that I really really like. Also, could anyone point me towards any composers who work in this style?

100. Xavier Cugat - Perfidia
(from 2046)

99. The Last Waltz (I think it's this - it's the baddy's theme tune)
(from Old Boy)

98. One Summer's Day - Joe Hisashi
(from Spirited Away)

97. Howl's Moving Castle Main Theme

Toru Takemitsu is a good place to start with this kind of stuff.

japan=se asia?

just to differentiate between the British meaning of Asian (i.e. Indian) and the US version (ie South-East Asia).

'asian' may change but 'asia' doesn't; se asia = vietnam/laos/malaysia etc

my favourite north-east asian film music ;0

95 the theme from mizoguchi's 'sansho dayu'
94 takemitsu's theme to teshigahara's 'woman in the dunes'
93 excerpt's from jim o' rourke's 'eureka' used in shinji aoyama's eponymous film, inspired by the album name which was in turn cribbed from the roeg film
92 the opening of hou hsaio hsien's 'millenium mambo'; some anonymous techno as shu qi wanders along an overpass in taiwie, in slow-mo, you see; it works, you know
91 joe hisashi's discordantly, gloopily pretty theme to takeshi kitano's 'hana bi'

OTM. I think it's Giong Lim, who scored a couple other Hou films maybe and Jia Zhang-ke's The World.

88. The music that goes over and over in In The Mood For Love. Haven't seen it lately but I remember it as quite beautiful.

87. The entire Oldboy soundtrack - I'm not a fan of film score music but I'll actually put this on and listen to it.

86. Song at the end of Miike's Visitor Q - Crap movie but that track is fantastic.

85. Happiness of the Katakuris - c'mon it's a zombie murder mystery musical, how can you go wrong?

84. All the pop songs in Linda Linda Linda. James Iha's score is pretty meh, though.

The theme song from Tokyo Drifter. I'd like to hear Scott Walker do that. In the original Japanese, of course.
