Music about Art/Artists

I'm doing a "playlist" for Toronto's Power Plant waterfront gallery for an outdoor event they're having this weekend, trying to put together three-plus hours of tracks about, mentioning or titled after visual art and artists. I've got a couple of hours' worth already, but it leans really heavily to herky-jerky postpunk, no-wave, improv and composition - partly due to my tastes but also because those have tended historically to be the big crossover points between music and the art world.

I'm glad to hear more of those examples, but much more so - any ideas for ballads, hip-hop, funk, soul, etc., with visual-art themes or even a few arty name-drops?

Rosemarie - Max Eider
Mona Lisa - Nat King Cole

"I am a Sensitive Artist" - King Missile

Bobby Peru (Bobby Peru), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 17:21 (nineteen years ago)

The King Missile track is a must.

Television Personalities have a few: David Hockney's Diary (two very different versions), Salvador Dali's Garden Party, Lichtenstein Painting, I Remember Bridget Riley. Also, Painter Man, Painting by Numbers, Picture of Dorian Gray, The Painted Word, The Man Who Paints Rainbows, Sad Mona Lisa.

Jonathan Richman: Pablo Picasso, Vincent Van Gogh

Mission of Burma - "Max Ernst"

Magna Gardner (New Media Intern), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 17:31 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I've noticed that about TV Personalities. Made my first hip-hop discovery now - Slick Rick, "Mona Lisa."

Again, NON-"art-school bands" would be ideal. (And that's nothing against art-school bands, just that I've got too many in that vein already.)

Songs with PAINTING

100% CHAMPS with a Yes! Attitude. (Austin, Still), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 17:39 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, also anything from the past couple of years would be lovely. The 80s are way overrepresented in my rough mix so far.

(Also overrepresented is Destroyer: Modern Painters, The Bad Arts, Painter in Your Pocket, European Oils, Looters' Follies, Watercolours into the Ocean and, best of all, What Road, with the priceless line, "Able, willing, ready/ Fuck the Spiral Jetty - / Tonight we work large!")

carl w (carl w), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 17:40 (nineteen years ago)

Songs about graffiti would also work!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 17:42 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, buzz off, this is something I'm doing for free. If you want to complain about the Canada thread yesterday, fine. Or ignore me. But I also ask because I figure it will be fun.

The Red Crayola's "A Portrait Of VI Lenin In The Style Of Jackson Pollock, Part I" neatly encapsulates the major points of Pollock's career.

"Helen Lundberg" by Sonic Youth -- An atonal tribute to the little-known post-surrealist.

"Isabel" by Unrest -- A lovely song about Isabel Bishop.

"Vincent (Starry Starry Night)" by Don McLean -- A pretty but somewhat gratingly saccharine song about Vincent Van Gogh and "that painting."

"Mona Lisa" -- A famous song about the still-more-famous famous painting, written by Ray Evans & Jay Livingstone. Covered by everybody on god's green earth. You could probably just play different people doing this song all night and never have to repeat yourself...

"Mapplethorpe Grey" by Pig Destroyer -- A brief hail of boulders that, perhaps, peripherally concerns the late Robert Mapplethorpe.

"Francis Bacon" by John S. Hall & Kramer -- An ostensibly amusing spoken word fragment about the artist.

The band Takka Takka have some songs about art/artists. And you may recognize their name from a Lichtenstein painting. Sorta poppy folkie indie rock. Great stuff. http://www.miserynews.com/webep.htm

"I Killed Sarah Lucas" and "Mr. And Mrs. Solanas" - Luke Haines, The Oliver Twist Manifesto

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 19:10 (nineteen years ago)

No harm, Huk. Sorry, the CAPS made me feel a little yelled at there.

"Paint the White House Black" is a great suggestion - and the idea of Gorillaz makes me think that on similar grounds I could get away with M.I.A., since she's (contentiously famously) an art-school grad, whose visuals are of a piece with her music.

That Takka Takka stuff isn't so bad. I was expecting much worse.

James Ensor by They Might Be Giants ("Meet! James! En-sor! Belgium's famous painter / Pick him up and shake his hand / Appreciate the man!")

Paint It Black (which is more, I think, about, like house painting than art painting--hey, Red House Painters!)

(the all caps thing is due to gamma ray exposure on I Love Comics)

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 19:45 (nineteen years ago)

That Takka Takka stuff isn't so bad. I was expecting much worse.

Like I said, they're a good band. I don't know why you were expecting much worse, unless it's due to my own sparkly rep on ilm.

mcd (mcd), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 19:46 (nineteen years ago)

Already had Daniel Johnston. Thanks to Rufus for pointing out the Shadowy Men track: Toronto content much appreciated!

Speaking of which, do we think zines are an art form? Can I get away with the Hidden Cameras' "Ode to Self-Publishing (Fear of Zine Failure)"?

By the way, I haven't seen anyone in any of these sorts of threads mention Momus's audio portrait of Jeff Koons on Stars Forever.

carl w (carl w), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 19:46 (nineteen years ago)

and hey, speaking of I Love Comics, howzabout:
James Kolchaka
Robert Crumb
Love & Rockets
Alice Cooper (i kid)

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 19:49 (nineteen years ago)

I wish I liked James Kolchaka's music as much as I like, say, Mike Kelley's (Destroy All Monsters), Michael Snow's (CCMC), Marcel Duchamp's, Greg Curnoe's (Nihilist Spasm Band), Christian Marclay's, Jeff Wall/Rodney Graham's (UJ3RKS, late-70s Vancouver) or even Graham's current songwritery stuff. "High" art wins this one so far.

Just ran into this quote from Michael Gira about the Angels of Light album New Mother:

"The Man With The Silver Tongue" is based on the images of the Viennese artist Rudolph Schwartzkoggler. "The Garden Hides The Jewel" is sort of an homage to Marcel Duchamp; "Inner Female" is an homage to Francis Bacon. There's actually a lot of songs about art on New Mother.

Are there notable Tropicalia songs about art, for instance?

Here's the final playlist I came up with. A few tracks are technically "cheating" but they work metaphorically for me. If you're in Toronto, it will be playing in the area outdoors behind the Power Plant at Harbourfront on Sat. from 5-8 pm. Since I have no idea who'll be listening, might as well make it worthwhile by sharing!

4. Smash The Beauty Machine - Future Bible Heroes
