Unsung: DJ Odi, Sami Koiviko, Adam X

Matt Olken (Moodles), Thursday, 29 June 2006 20:52 (nineteen years ago)

sung: luciano
unsung: my housemate omar, aka DJ omar, aka omar león, resident at moog and loft (both barcelona), frequent guest at creamfields andalucia, etc. no one outside of spain will ever really spin, but fuck is he consistent and brilliant. style is fierce, heavy on the midrange, really pushing mixes til they're ready to fall apart; ranges from madchester to minimal, likes to lean heavily on 90s techno. used to run the minifunk label, now has a hand in musicvictim.com. i'm obviously heavily biased but dude is an inspiration, mixologically. (i hope this is the first time i've ever used that word. and the last.)

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Thursday, 29 June 2006 21:39 (nineteen years ago)

sung: (vahid will kill me for this) Michael Mayer.

unsung: can't think of any, most of my unsung people are producers, but then I seldom get to see smaller DJs play cos I'm not living in London or a similar hub.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 29 June 2006 22:03 (nineteen years ago)

oh shit I just saw "of all time", that's a level of gravitas I'm not ready for.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 29 June 2006 22:03 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, me too - i'm not wading into the waters of eternity here.
also that should read "no one outside of spain will really SEE HIM spin."

too late, drunk, shouldn't post.

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Thursday, 29 June 2006 23:46 (nineteen years ago)

best unsung djs: paul kennedy, tracer hand (both of ilm fame)

geeta (geeta), Friday, 30 June 2006 00:12 (nineteen years ago)

not the best of all time but unsung: Dub Arachnoid Trim aka Kentaro Iwaki, Keita Magara, the only two Japanese DJs I actually like, Nick Craddock
sung but should be more sung: DJ Heather, Dan Bell, Rob Mello

Good Dog (Good Dog), Friday, 30 June 2006 00:46 (nineteen years ago)

Sung: JD Twitch/Danny Wang
Unsung: Tim Sweeney/EYE (DJ ChaosX/DJ PikaPikaPika)

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Friday, 30 June 2006 00:57 (nineteen years ago)

i'm only basing this on the Vertigo Mixed cd (and his wicked compilations, reissues, taste, etc): Andy Votel

flëétwøöd måçk (jaxon), Friday, 30 June 2006 01:16 (nineteen years ago)

I think Derrick May's talent as a DJ is by far overlooked in the face of what is really, not that prolific a producing career. He has been an amazing DJ for about 20 years, and has delivered some of the best sets I've ever heard. He also has that prototypical arrogant DJ attitude that I am kind of a big fan of. It's kind of blasphemy to say this, but I can take or leave his productions, but I don't think I'll ever get tired of his DJ sets.

tylero (tylero), Friday, 30 June 2006 01:51 (nineteen years ago)

Sung: DJ Hype
Unsung: Maga Bo

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 30 June 2006 01:56 (nineteen years ago)

i love derrick may as a dj. i wish he'd put out a mix as good as some of the live sets i've heard by him.

breakfast pants (disco stu), Friday, 30 June 2006 02:02 (nineteen years ago)

although getting that kind of energy across would be difficult in any other medium.

breakfast pants (disco stu), Friday, 30 June 2006 02:03 (nineteen years ago)

sung: derrick carter

breakfast pants (disco stu), Friday, 30 June 2006 02:03 (nineteen years ago)

vahid what are basing your pick of ken ishii on? i have most of his albums, but i don't think i've ever heard a dj set by him.

breakfast pants (disco stu), Friday, 30 June 2006 02:06 (nineteen years ago)

Unsung: Ken Collier,

Disco Nihilist (mjt), Friday, 30 June 2006 03:48 (nineteen years ago)

I suppose My Sung should be David Mancuso and Nicky Siano.

Disco Nihilist (mjt), Friday, 30 June 2006 03:50 (nineteen years ago)

unsung electrifying mojo..anyone have his mixes? to make him sung??

Gary Abugan (henry chinaski), Friday, 30 June 2006 03:55 (nineteen years ago)

The more I think about it, if TFBs (like myself) had ridden Derrick May's jock the way they did/do to Jeff Mills, techno would be in a way better spot (not counting minimal, which is doing just fine)

tylero (tylero), Friday, 30 June 2006 04:59 (nineteen years ago)

tricky: pretty much all of his DJ sets are the shit. check discogs. probably the easiest to get yr hands on is "x-mix", i would also heartily recommend "mix-up" and "millenium spinnin". the newest one is a little more standard.

i totally agree with these: deadly avenger, josh wink, rob mello

"of all time" = last twenty years, let's face it.

the fuckablity of late picasso (vahid), Friday, 30 June 2006 16:27 (nineteen years ago)

derrick carter is spinning at summerdance this year.

deej.. (deej..), Friday, 30 June 2006 16:30 (nineteen years ago)

I think Josh Wink is really overrated.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 30 June 2006 17:23 (nineteen years ago)

Sung: Masters at Work.
Unsung (kinda): WBMX's original Hot Mix 5: Ralphi Rosario, Farly Jackmaster Funk, Kenny Jason, Mickey Oliver, and Scott Silz. Amazing, and all individuals.

Thomas Inskeep (submeat), Friday, 30 June 2006 17:45 (nineteen years ago)

sung: derrick may

unsung:

sunflowrfish

(SPAZ soundsystem,sfo;
heard her spin dub,idm,
jungle, and noiz simultaneously
on four turntables. i've never
been the same since...)

ryan

(originally from eugene,oregon.
lives in sf, last i checked.
other than myself,
he's the only person
i've ever known to play
the moonskmoonskmoonsk
song from subhead 5
for a dancefloor...)

jon williams

(sfo,organized noise records;
yeah, say what you like,
but everytime i've managed
to catch him, he's reminded
me of nothing less than
those swans shows
which scarred me horribly
as a young child...)

aba shanti i

(aba shanti soundsystem,uk;
one man,one turntable, one
ridiculously loud set of speakers.
dub so promethean, it made furniture
move and old jamaican women swing
their skirts around. if you are lucky
enough to live in london, i demand
you go and see him today...)

fishead

(winnipeg,canada;
postcore turntablism
which makes meth fed
pitbulls reconsider their
notion of the phrase
"off the chain")

bini
(sfo,5lowershop
soundsystem; once
heard this lad play
teknival type stuff
in such a mad fashion,
it inspired me to
embrace the speakers
and roll around on the
ground laughing
hysterically.

furthermore,
he danced
when i played,
too.

fuck everyone
else on this list ,
and on your
lists, too.

bini is
my god.

skinner

(ny,ny,black monolith records;
possibly the first and only doomcore
dj in the continental united states.
RESPECT.)

brynley swinson

(taichung,taiwan; turns
deep house into something
so abysmally melancholy,
it'd make rilke weep...)

or

this guy named ted
who used to live
up the street from me.

(jacksonville,fl. runs a
pawnshop in atlanta nowadays;
million year old hiphop
dj who owns every
electro record ever released
and plays them as if his
life depended on it...)

should any of
these folk
come to yr town

rest assured,

they will help you

party down.

Calliope Marakasu (lissajou), Sunday, 2 July 2006 15:39 (nineteen years ago)

semi-sung: Herbert doesn't get nearly enough appreciation as a dj. I like his "one track after another" approach, but just beautifully sequenced.

Jacob (Jacob), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 03:18 (nineteen years ago)

tim sweeney

boonah (boonah), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 03:20 (nineteen years ago)

Sung: Derrick May, Theo Parrish
Unsung: DJ Duane Harriott (NYC - yeah, he's my pal but he's also one of the best DJ's in NYC at the moment. Esp. the drunker he gets)

Jay Vee's Return (Manon_69), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 03:56 (nineteen years ago)

Unsung (these days) - Paul 'Trouble' Anderson

Back in the mid-90s his wednesday night sessions at the Loft (yeah, cheesy reverential name) playing deep latin disco and new jersey garage scream-fests were incredible week after week. Really raw and energetic, which is opposite to the way most people dj that stuff - all stretched out and respectful. He'd pump the faders and really work the eq in a way that made those records feel more like techno than disco.

Jacob (Jacob), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 06:04 (nineteen years ago)

unsung: Colin Dale, Kemistry

blunt (blunt), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 06:15 (nineteen years ago)

Blunt i have seen Colin Dale mixes around and my hands have twitched slightly - do you recommend any in particular?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 06:51 (nineteen years ago)

No, I just remember "live" ones throughout the 90s. Don't think I've heard recorded versions.

blunt (blunt), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 09:53 (nineteen years ago)

Sung - Damian Lazerus, Dj Hell

UnSung- Doc something from the original Voodoo nights at Mardi Gras Liverpool circa 1992. Me and chips.

sim (simbo), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 11:43 (nineteen years ago)

two years pass...

Sung: Appleblim (that shit is just right)

Unsung: Vincent Lemieux (Musique Risquee/Mutek folk, put on perhaps the best DJ I saw of 2007, if only for playing Soul Capsule's Law of Grace in it's unmixed entirety)
