Changes at Radio 1:

Murray's move to the 10pm-midnight slot from Monday to Thursday

http://media.guardian.co.uk/radio/story/0,,1809963,00.html?gusrc=rss

Murray's move to the 10pm-midnight slot from Monday to Thursday, comes as part of a revamp of Radio 1's evening and overnight specialist music programming lineup, to be introduced from Monday September 25.

Oh dear...

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 30 June 2006 14:37 (nineteen years ago)

Colin Murray in the old Peel late night slot ! Disaster !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 30 June 2006 14:39 (nineteen years ago)

Give him a chance! He may well drift towards the role.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 30 June 2006 14:40 (nineteen years ago)

Will he drift away from being a dick?

¡Vamos a matar, Dadaismus! (Dada), Friday, 30 June 2006 14:42 (nineteen years ago)

It could happen!

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 30 June 2006 14:43 (nineteen years ago)

Fingers crossed!

¡Vamos a matar, Dadaismus! (Dada), Friday, 30 June 2006 14:44 (nineteen years ago)

What happens to OneMusic shows that replaced Peel: Huw Stephens, Rob da Bank etc

More changes:

Other new specialist shows on Radio 1 from September will include a 1Xtra showcase, featuring the best new black music from the BBC's digital station; an audience interaction programme fronted by Annie Mac; Annie's Mix Tape, hosted by the same DJ; and a multi-genre slot featuring new DJs, which has a working title Radio 1's Future Mix.

I wonder what, this is going to be, re time slot ! a multi-genre slot featuring new DJs, which has a working title Radio 1's Future Mix

What comes after Midnight slot: will Breezeblock, Rock Show, Annie Nightingale etc be shifted an hour earlier?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 30 June 2006 14:46 (nineteen years ago)

"Other new specialist shows on Radio 1 from September will include shunting all black music into a two hour slot".

re: 'In New Music We Trust' will this before 10pm or after midnight ?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 30 June 2006 14:51 (nineteen years ago)

New shows focusing on particular music genres and presented by experts are to run at 2100 on those four nights.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 30 June 2006 14:54 (nineteen years ago)

oh noes?

I am just trying to analyze these changes.

Actually, discussing this Like Serious Adults, surely being moved from the afternoon slot to late night is a massive demotion for the chirpy Oirish prick?

Radio 1 - New Specialist Schedule
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/schedule/specialist_new.shtml

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 30 June 2006 15:35 (nineteen years ago)

David Jensen's evening show in the eighties was usually very good, despite his pre-existing dorky daytime radio persona. Perhaps colong will be ok, who knows. Probably no worse than rob da bank who is awful.

also

Other Radio 1 DJs moving around the schedule as part of the revamp of specialist evening and overnight programming include Mary Anne Hobbes, who is shifting from her Monday night Breezeblock show to a new Thursday night slot featuring experimental dance music.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 30 June 2006 17:39 (nineteen years ago)

Yet again I am passed over for the Top 40 show... :-(

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 3 July 2006 13:57 (nineteen years ago)

It looks like Radio 1's chief honcho Andy Parfitt has banished specialist genre shows into the margins of the night !

Mary Anne Hobbs has confirmed that her new show is moving: to 2am - 4am on Thursdays [i.e the early hours of Friday morning]

http://www.dubstepforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=5433

although, I don't listen to him Gilles Peterson is also moving to a 2am - 4am slot

http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/mbradio1/F2675883?thread=3217324

You see a pattern emerging instead of utilizing the 12midnight - 2am slot, the clown has banished non mainstream music to the graveyard shift of 2am - 4am. Even more of a "listen again" only situation for most Brits !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 3 July 2006 21:19 (nineteen years ago)

BBC CLOWNS force LISTEN AGAIN actions on LISTENING PUBLIC.

Matty Taylor to play two hour set of BHANGRA at 2pm every day from hear to INFINITY.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 3 July 2006 21:22 (nineteen years ago)

I presume LISTEN AGAIN is the get-out clause for their continuing public funding - "look, we are programming minority stuff and anyone who wants it can listen to it any time they want."

Radio 1 is an embarrassment, has damaged Radio 2, and both stations should be sold off compulsorily.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 05:52 (nineteen years ago)

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 12:01 (nineteen years ago)

Because we just can't get enough of Tim Westwood, Jo "Scab" Whiley and cheap "legendary" Pete Tong, can we?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 12:17 (nineteen years ago)

Also Why sould a so called youth oriented radio station trust over 40s to be involved in "In New Music We Trust"

Are Westwood, Wiley, Tong and Lammo - all past it, hangers on?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 12:23 (nineteen years ago)

Careful what you say about over-40s, DJ M...

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 12:29 (nineteen years ago)

yeah quit hating on JOHN PEEL

Roughage Crew (Enrique), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 12:34 (nineteen years ago)

John Peel was a unique one off.

Westwood, Wiley, Tong and Lammo

Westwood has a weekly show
Wiley has a daytime show
Tong has a weekly show
Lammo is already on 6 Music

are these the best people to fill these 1 hour slots? where are the opportunities for new dj talent? or has andy parfitt been a lazy sod by giving these slots to established radio celebs?

Is seems rather strange to brand a show "In New Music We Trust" with a bunch of established broadcasters presenting them.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 12:47 (nineteen years ago)

does anyone on r1 choose what they play? if not, it doesn't really matter who's presenting it.

Roughage Crew (Enrique), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 12:48 (nineteen years ago)

After 7pm the daytime playlist is not used.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 12:52 (nineteen years ago)

I heard Colin talking about his new show, and he said that an hour of it would be given over to requests, or whatevfer requests are called nowadays, so it's up to YOU to make it work.

I can't imagine why I heard him talking about this.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 13:11 (nineteen years ago)

"in new music we trust" is just a meaningless ad phrase, surely.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 13:15 (nineteen years ago)

in a way yes, marketing speak for branding the 9pm - 10pm slot mondays - thursdays

however the djs will be playing new music, not tracks from the past

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 13:18 (nineteen years ago)

As opposed to the daytime Radio 1 DJs who play nothing but Pilot and Bloodwyn Pig, huh?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 13:23 (nineteen years ago)

I think Mark Radcliffe moved to R2 some while ago...

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 13:26 (nineteen years ago)

i remember when the said 'nothing before 1990'. wonder where they're up to now.

Roughage Crew (Enrique), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 13:28 (nineteen years ago)

obsession with newness is silly anyway. of course there's a place for new music, but cramming the daytime with all stuff from the last six weeks just gets repetitive and reinforces the now-ist dispose-of-it culture of late capitalism and that.

Roughage Crew (Enrique), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 13:29 (nineteen years ago)

When they say an hour of requests, do they mean it's gonna be a kinda "Phone up to get the haircut indie band you street team for played", or are they looking to recreate the Bank Holiday Monday shows where YOU TAKE OVER THE AIRWAYS and request the theme tune from Baywatch 40 times an hour.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 13:31 (nineteen years ago)

it could have been "In Old Music We Trust"

Westwood - Classic hip hop/rap tracks from the 80s/90s
Lammo - Crap Britpop and generic rock from the 90s
Tong - House classics from the 1990s - similar concept to Dave Pearce Dance Anthems
Wiley - my faves from reading the NME in the 80s/90s ?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 13:33 (nineteen years ago)

But who is going to play Basement 5?

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 13:36 (nineteen years ago)

Radio 1 is fucked anyway because they've crippled their playlist so much that they can only get their listeners interested in three types of music: major label indie, dead-eyed R&B divas, and "ironic" "cheesy" "house" "tracks" with 80s pop samples. Rap is dead on the station, they can't fit emo in, singer-songwriters just sound incongrous...

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 13:37 (nineteen years ago)

Hi dere! (xpost)

DJ Punctum - plays whatever the feck he likes
Tonight: Burial, Cornelius Cardew, Clodagh Rodgers, Alternative TV, the Dooleys, DJ Scud...

*cue Radio 1 emergency music*

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 13:40 (nineteen years ago)

Radio 1 presents DJ Martian's Music Mix

Amit, TV on the Radio, Enslaved, iliketrains, Triosk, 120 Days, Junior Boys, Burial, Cortney Tidwell, Agalloch, The Great Depression, Cannibal Ox, Dave Douglas, White Willow, Captain, Aborym, Enduser, Esbjörn Svensson Trio, Mastodon, Jesu, Kayo Dot, Alex Smoke, Barbara Morgenstern, Guido Schneider, Tunng, The Workhouse, Ulver

why can't radio 1 or 6 music mix things up in a multi-genre style? like John Peel did so well

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 14:01 (nineteen years ago)

Cocaine's a helluva drug.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 14:02 (nineteen years ago)

if i were Gilles, MAH or Annie i'd resign immediately.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 14:02 (nineteen years ago)

I think Radio 1 should have a show on Monday night where they play EVERY SINGLE released that day inc. re-issues, good remixes and 'b-sides'.

I would listen to it next day on the internet.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 14:04 (nineteen years ago)

They've binned gilles peterson's sunday evening show? Fuckers.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 14:08 (nineteen years ago)

xpost they used to have such a show on Radio London, back in the day (the day being 1977 or thereabouts. I was on it, one week)

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 14:10 (nineteen years ago)

Is this the worst slot of the week?

Annie Nightingale 2am - 4am - the weekend has ended, it's early hours of monday morning - lets play some breaks and pretend to party

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 14:10 (nineteen years ago)

given that they have specialist stations now it isn't surprising that this has happened. it's the same with bbc2 -- > bbc4.

Roughage Crew (Enrique), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 14:11 (nineteen years ago)

Giles Peterson 2am - 4am - he moves to the very early hours of Thursday morning

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 14:12 (nineteen years ago)

good, stay there!

never liked his steez.

Roughage Crew (Enrique), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 14:14 (nineteen years ago)

Gilles problem is he never had a decent catchphrase.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 14:56 (nineteen years ago)

yes.

Roughage Crew (Enrique), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 14:59 (nineteen years ago)

Gilles' show was pretty great, I thought - not what I expected at all when I first heard it. The only R1 show in a long time where I actually wrote down the names of rekkids he played so I could go & find them. It didn't seem to fit in on R1 at all though, in terms of general vibe, bleh.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 15:11 (nineteen years ago)

yeahhh his latest show with pharrell williams was really really ace! i love giles hahhaha ace guy! one question wot'll happen to annie mac she was aceeeeeeeeee :D

Rudy Katoch (rudykatoch), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 21:16 (nineteen years ago)

two months pass...
Did anyone listen to this last night? I hesitate to dismiss it completely on five minutes listening and the tracklist but it's an INSULT. Queen? The Killers? Live session from The Foo Fucking Fighters?! I turned it off the moment he said that (actually I switched over to John Kennedy on Xfm, which was not bad). Rob Da Bank was the only even semi-decent replacement for Peel IMO, and if it's going to be "Jo Whiley in the Evening" from now on I can't see myself regularly listening to Radio 1 again, especially with the Worldwide and Westwood changes too.

Dear Auntie, please sort it out. But you can keep Mr Murray at Fighting Talk where he is grate.

ewmy (ewmy), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 10:03 (nineteen years ago)

Thank heavens I didn't waste my time listening to it.

Listened to Westwood on Friday; he didn't exactly sound pleased about the changes: "Indie disco one, hip hop nil."

It's all going downhill for BNP Radio 1.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 10:16 (nineteen years ago)

I've just realised that the best DJ on Radio 1 right now is Mike Davis. That's... shit.

Sadly, he will be the next Alexis Petridish. (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 22:58 (nineteen years ago)

Westwood's still great, when he pulls his tongue out of Jay-Z's arse finger out.

Those new radio ads on the BBC should end with Murray getting off his comedy propelled swivel chair, undoing his fly, and taking a long relaxing piss over John Peel's grave. It'd be metatextual, or something.

THE MUSIC BROADCASTER OF THE YEAR

GOLD
Colin Murray

"The judges were impressed with Murray’s fierce passion for music, which he manages to marshal without descending into music nerd. This is a broadcaster with a winning blend of charisma and charm. Self-confident without being self-satisfied, this year’s winner proves that the best broadcasters are big enough to foreground music rather than themselves."

so wrong.

one year passes...

Thursday before last, 10 pm:

OK, despite my gut instincts I'll give Murray a chance, just the one.

Cue three or four minutes of garbage garble jingle blurbs about NEW MUSIC as though it were a brothel; IN NEW MUSIC WE TRUST TRUST US FOR NEW MUSIC over and over again and I remember why, Westwood aside, I never listen to the bloody station any more.

But maybe he'll play something new. Just maybe.

And the first record I hear him play on this BRAVE NEW MUSIC STATION FOR TRUSTWORTHY NEW MUSIC is:

Van Halen's 22-year-old "Why Can't This Be Love?"

Privatise now.
