The Jody Grind C/D

No thread on this hugely underrated Atlanta Georgia band featuring a young Kelly Hogan so I thought I'd see if anyone loves them as much as me. Two albums (One Man's Trash Is Another Man's Treasure and Lefty's Deceiver) and a couple of comp tracks, then half the band died in a tragic car crash. Ms. Hogan has made quite a name for herself since. I just saw her come close to stealing the show from Neko Case last night (as NC's backup singer), hence this thread.

I should also mention that reports of seeing the Jody Grind live would be most appreciated, as they put on one of the best shows I ever saw back in '89. Anybody else see them do the Spiderman Theme Song?

Oh man this takes me back. Growing up in Atlanta, I often feel blessed for having such a great cross section of "opening bands" from the local scene. The Jody Grind were right up there in my jr high eyes with Smoke, The Gold Sparkle Band, Cicada Sings and (later) Seely.

What a set of pipes Kelly had!! I just remember her voice rocking the shit out of my young self, even when stacked up next to my anglophile and national indie heroes of the time. Probably the consistently best live band around the area during that time - I saw them dozens of times. They were great *every single time*.

Don't have the cd's and wouldn't even know where to start looking for them (did them make it to places like Amazon?) as I don't live in Atlanta anymore.... but yeah, thanks for bringing them up :)

where the hell did they get off jacking their name from a second-string english prog band from the 70s?

I think the Atlanta band jacked the name from the Horace Silver jazz album too, actually ( iirc )

i've never actually heard the original jody grind. their records are too pricey for my blood.

in early 20th century jazz/blues/army mythology, "jody" or "joe de grinder" was the civilian guy who was fucking the soldiers' women back home. i don't know what the first usage of "the jody grind" was, but it probably predates horace silver's usage.

you bet it's great to be a movie star. (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 30 June 2006 16:42 (nineteen years ago)

JBR OTM re: band name origin.

What a set of pipes indeed. I bet if she had taken a solo tune last night a lot of people would have walked out of that Neko show with their synapses heavily rearranged.
