Shawnna - 'Block Music'

I dig "Gettin' Some" plenty, and am craving a good new(ish) female MC. AndyK's allmusic review 'bout has me convinced to pick this up this weekend. Anyone have any thoughts, yea/nay, on the album?

Oh, and the "Gettin' Some" remix is included, in case it matters.

the original "Gettin' Some" is an extra track too. I just listened to it for the 2nd time and though I like Shawnna (I saw her at a radio concert a couple years ago and she blew several more famous male rappers off the stage in terms of performing prowess), the album sounds pretty dull to me so far. I like "Can't Break Me" and a couple other songs have growing potential, but compared to the Field Mob album and the DTP compilation it's kind of disappointing. deej wrote some really positive stuff about recently but maybe it's a lot of Chi-town pride stuff that I'm not hearing:

Its a really good album, I think I mentioned on the rolling hip-hop thread, and its considerably better than her first. It looks like I agree almost entirely w Andy's review, including the part about the Valentino track being the worst one. The song "Chicago" has a new radicals sample.

He's very right that its more shawnna, and there's more breadth topically. Aside from Pharell's distracting verse, the "Gettin Some" remix is pretty great too. Favorite track aside from "Gettin Some" is the one with 8ball and mjg.

I kind of wish it was longer, actually.

xpost

(Only listened once before writing about it. Ditto Field Mob, but, uh uh...)

yeah, it is kind of short, without the 2 versions of "Gettin' Some" it would be like 45 minutes long. I wish there was something as stunning as "R.P.M." on it, it's really a shame Shondrae doesn't produce anything for DTP anymore.

is gettin' some the too short sampling one? that's cool! beat 96 is playing it a lot.

that and the i'm in love with a stripper remix reminded me how much i like the sound of his voice, it's such a classic, he can (and often does) have the most garbage lyrics but they sound cool with his voice....scarface is kinda like that too.

It is, yes (the Too Short-sampling song - it's "Blowjob Betty" that's sampled).

I think its interesting how many people mishear "she's the type of girl to make yr toes pop" as "...make yr toes curl," some sort of weird brain-assumption that glosses over the actual lyric.

deej.. (deej..), Friday, 30 June 2006 20:41 (nineteen years ago)

Also I don't think Short or Scarface have garbage lyrics! Matt surprisingly OffTM.

deej.. (deej..), Friday, 30 June 2006 20:42 (nineteen years ago)

oops! i didn't mean that scarface has garbage lyrics...at all! sorry facemob. he's real solid all the time!

too short, i dunno, by the time of like shorty the pimp (stuff after short dog's in the house) he was really starting to wear on me...i was a big fan back then and sort of got sick of him......but i don't know much he's done recently, outside of that bia bia remix a long time ago and that devin fuckfaces song and other random stuff, so maybe he's good...but hell, early too short is awesome as hell so who am i to judge?

i meant only to praise the voice!

I heard it as "toes curl" too... Maybe non-familiarity with the original plays into it.

one year passes...

anyone ever checked shawnna's early shit as a part of infamous syndicate? album is pretty good, a little hit or miss but 'jenny jonez' is a classic single. its on relativity
