Durutti Column from 2001 and onward

I'll have to go back and check Keep Breathing (and the rest of this decade's stuff), but I was pleasantly surprised by the latest one The Sporadic Three.

I have to agree with the sentiment that he's warmer and more playful in his old age. Ditto on the love for him singing.

i was gonna start a thread like this! i feel kinda bad that i own almost everything up to sex & death and then NOTHING. i don't even own sex & death anymore. i just didn't listen to it much. meanwhile, there is like a whole 'nother career's worth of stuff after sex & death. i don't know why i didn't keep up. i mean, i love vini.

one reason might be my luekwarm feelings for sex & death and the fact that i would see later stuff for ungodly new prices of 20+ dollars and decide against getting them.

so has anybody heard "idiot savants" yet? was released july 15th, i think. none of my usual american mailorders have gotten it in stock yet. it's new stuff, recorded in may and june of this year.

The forthcoming Durutti Column album, to be released early in March, is to be titled Love in the Time of Recession!!

i discovered the other day that it was a durutti album that was the first commercially released DAT. i think four or five DC albums came out on DAT, i wonder if that's some kind of world record?

i still need to get idiot savants. the steppenwolf soundtrack was kinda disappointing. someone else's party is still the strongest of the recent work. he needs to sing more.

Wasn't sure which Durutti topic to revive for this post, but I settled on this one.

Taking in Chronicle XL for the first time in quite a while and I have to say that it's reminded of his incredibly strong run in later years. Chronicle was obviously never intended to be his last hurrah, but that's exactly what it seems to have ended up as. I can think of no better way for him to make that sort of statement, honestly. It is such a sad, yet somehow life-affirming record. Same can be said for A Paean to Wilson and Idiot Savants (which I will still argue is one his very best albums, period).

Chronicle has that gargantuan trilogy of songs that kick off disc two ('Free From All the Chaos' / 'Electrostatic' / 'Follow') and that is a combination of emotional heft that has consistently brought tears to my eyes since the first time I heard it.

Absolutely wonderful music.

I need to get a copy of Chronicle XL, and give the 2-3 previous albums some attention... everything from Idiot Savants onwards. How is his health these days? Good, I hope.

For everything post-Idiot Savants, here's how I would rate them. . .

Sporadic Three:
For just being another installment in the "Sporadic" series, I'd say it's easily the best in that regard. It's all over the place, obviously. But it has some excellent new songs ('Birthday Present', 'Mama and Papa') and even an outtake from LC.

Treatise on the Steppenwolf:
Mostly just songs from the previous few records under different titles. Pretty disappointing, actually.

Sunlight to Blue. . .Blue to Blackness:
A really underrated album, actually. A very pretty, calm record. I've always likened it to the classic jazz tradition of recording an all ballads album after someone near and dear to the band leader passes away. This is Vini's "all ballads" record for Tony Wilson.

Love in the Time of Recession:
This one's alright. Some of the songs are kind of meandering, but 'Rainbow Maker' (and its sequel 'More Rainbows') is pretty fantastic. Kind of a second tier album for this period.

A Paean to Wilson
At the time, this felt like one of his most profound statements. It still does, but kind of to a lesser degree after properly digesting Chronicle XL. And yet, I'd still say it is one of his most beautiful records, which is saying quite a lot.

And then there's Chronicle / Chronicle XL, which is just such a sprawling, encompassing piece of work. It's absolutely huge in scope and execution. Hard to imagine even casual Durutti fans not loving it.

Man, 'Falling' from Rebellion is one of his most beautiful songs.
