BBC6Music, Classic or Dud?

I used to listen on-line, mainly (if not solely) to Liz Kershaw, mainly because she would quite often use my 'funnies' emailed in, and winning one of the comps (two Who 'deluxe' cds ah great thanks) helped. Then she moved off and Vic McGlyn took over. About then, I moved jobs and stopped listening.

Just tried it just now, and it's "Everything/Girl" blandness.

Should I persevere? Should I carry on in the hope of winning summat worthwile?

Or, where other should I try instead?

No. No. Nowhere else worth trying.

There's always Anna Raeburn on the LBC.

I have to say classic for the many plays of my band!

Dr.C (Dr.C), Monday, 3 July 2006 12:36 (eighteen years ago) link

I like 6Music generally. Though I mostly listen on the weekends (Marc Riley's Rocket Science and Mint, Russel Brand, Andrew Collins, Maconie's Freak Zone).
Listening right now I hear fkin Radio 1 reject, Nemone, is on playing the Ceasers, which isn't good. The bloke who does the mid-morning show is usually okay.

David Orton (scarlet), Monday, 3 July 2006 13:18 (eighteen years ago) link

The fact that their "outre" music programme is called The Freak Zone encapsulates everything that's wrong with the station. Along with the superannuated presenters.

Steve "bitter? I'm not bitter" Lamacq is up next, might give him a go. Might not...

"vintage session from Thousand Yard Stare"

You should definitiely continue with the competitions and the funnies, although I feel Ken Bruce's Popmaster is the pinnacle. I had a funny read out when Stuart Maconie was doing it. I find Ken himself too intimidating to enage in specualtive funnies.

I like the Freakzone - where else can you hear Godspeed you black emperor!, Can, Sargasso Trio, Autechre, The Scars etc on a Sunday evening?

I'm waiting for M. Carlin to write up a 70,000 word essay on da blog regarding why 6Music isn't hip enough for hip people before I post any hip opinions here.

Do they play any Gay Dad?

Even when I listened fairly regularly, I can't say that I listened specifically to one show or another. Presumably that is why I feel it is neither classic nor dud.

It's alright. I too like the weekend shows. Although that said, Gideon Coe once said my name on air and played my request, which was nice.

I can't think of a radio station I've enjoyed more stuff on in my lifetime. I'd pay my license fee for Radio 6 alone. Actually, given that I hardly watch the telly, it's pretty much the only thing I do use that the license fee pays for.

I listen to BBC6 about once a week now. Stuart Maconie does a fantastic and interesting show. Maybe a bit too 60's influenced for some, but I usually find it interesting, and not a little educational.

Nemone's The Dream Ticket has some cool stuff going for it, Peel Session tracks and live things, it's not all good but maybe half...shame they can't get the tracklistings to stay up after Thursday's show. They played a great Peel Session track from Magazine last Thursday.

I haven't listened to other shows really, but did catch a live broadcast of something or other (I think it was the 6 mix) and was very pleased with the dance music I was hearing. That's where I heard Bambaataa's Planet Rock again for the first time in...oh god...20 years? Wow.

Wait - so let me get this straight - the best Marcello can come up with as an alternative is a bloody TALK show by some lady named Raeburn?

There are an awful lot of internet radio stations out there, Marcello, surely one plays music to your liking, otherwise Esteban has called your bluff as far as I'm concerned.

As I said, it's the name of the programme which is the problem.

It's a superb programme!

I prefer to listen to speech radio than music radio these days.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 05:46 (eighteen years ago) link

I like Anna Raeburn (from the Talk Radio days, anyway), but she doesn't play classic Peel sessions etc.

David Orton (scarlet), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 08:22 (eighteen years ago) link

Fine by me.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 08:27 (eighteen years ago) link

The last six songs played on Gideon Coe's show at around 10.30am:

The Human League - Being Boiled (Peel session)
Athelete - Wires
Joy Division - Love Will Tear etc
Muse - Exo Politics
The Darling Buds - Hit the Ground
Velvet Underground - Sweet Jane

A mixed bag.

David Orton (scarlet), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 08:49 (eighteen years ago) link

Any of which could equally have been, and indeed have been, played on Radio 2.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 08:51 (eighteen years ago) link

They haven't but 6Music is the indie Radio 2, so you're getting close.

David Orton (scarlet), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 09:03 (eighteen years ago) link

6Music appears to be the reincarnation of 1997 GLR, presenters included.

Is XFM online?

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 09:11 (eighteen years ago) link

yes, but you wouldn't want to listen to it during the day. Also there are 3 Xfm stations in the UK, Manchester, Scotland and the original London station.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 09:25 (eighteen years ago) link

Reasons for not listening to daytime music radio:

Playlist playlist playlist
Ads ads always the same ads
(except on BBC where it's: BBC ads BBC ads always the same BBC ads)

In such cases, pace Hot Chip, the power of repetition really isn't in me.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 10:05 (eighteen years ago) link

Mark, I gave up on UK radio years ago. Why not give WFMU in New Jersey, USA (www.wfmu.org) a try? They stream in both MP3 and Realaudio and they archive everything so you can listen whenever it's convenient. Probably best to start by looking through DJ playlists and choose which programmes best match your tastes.

Andy Dyer (AndyD), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 16:18 (eighteen years ago) link

Are Hot Chip really that bad?

Lenny Koggins (Bimble...), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 18:04 (eighteen years ago) link

That new album of theirs is really quite OK, not that you ever hear them on Radio 1.
