did "another side" ever make it to cd?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Monday, 3 July 2006 15:00 (eighteen years ago)

http://www.discogs.com/release/37939

but that seems to be the last issue of it.

jed_ (jed), Monday, 3 July 2006 15:15 (eighteen years ago)

wow. and here i thought every important lp had been reissued (surely that's a thread that exists already?).

can we talk about how lovely some of this stuff is, like "what about this love?" and "washing machine"...

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 04:50 (eighteen years ago)

"IN THE BEGINNING THERE WAS JACK..."

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 05:09 (eighteen years ago)

"Distant Planet" is my favourite I think. Seems to sum up the whole Fingers approach - the slant of you want and need to escape life through dance but that this isn't necessarily a good thing.

And man, the cover photography on "Another Side" is awesome. They're so pimply and unhealthy looking!

Jacob (Jacob), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 06:00 (eighteen years ago)

Crazy that the cd is on sale for so much more than the vinyl...

Jacob (Jacob), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 09:38 (eighteen years ago)

"what about this love" is one of my favourite songs ever (and one of Ronan's too, if i'm not mistaken).

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 10:55 (eighteen years ago)

and one of mine. i searched for the 12" for years and then found it for a couple of quid in a second hand shop. isn't that always the way?

michael wells (michael w.), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 11:17 (eighteen years ago)

It's on the Introduction album, second-hand copies of which turn up fairly frequently (at least in London). Well worth getting. The track "Survivor" is quite devastating.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 11:21 (eighteen years ago)

i have that album on cassette! and yes, "survivor" is heart breaking.

michael wells (michael w.), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 11:48 (eighteen years ago)

You would think if there ever was a time for it be reissued, it would probably be now with all the trax/casablanca reissues. Hopefully there isn't any legal tape holding it up.

Agree on pretty much all the song selections so far.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 17:54 (eighteen years ago)

does anyone have "another side" in mp3 form AHEM?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 17:56 (eighteen years ago)

funny you should say that...

i'll email you later tonight. anyone else? give me a shout.

i'm uploading this now but it's 130mb so could be some time!

Never No More Lonely is my fave, and it's been booted, credited just to Robert Owens.

And me? (I have a bunch of old house stuff ripped from CD, including "Introduction", if anyone's interested...)

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Thursday, 6 July 2006 03:50 (eighteen years ago)

Thank you Jed!

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Thursday, 6 July 2006 18:01 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, thanks. i'd never knowingly listened to this stuff (larry heard or early chicago tracks) before. totally knew the "house is a feeling" track. it's pretty amazing. totally fills in the gap of what happened to R'n'B post boogie (which i've just nearly overdosed on). and it's way more soulful than i was expecting. change up the rhythm just slightly and you've got Dwele or Vikter Duplaix

i recently got the Alleviated pressing of What About This Love for like $4 so i've been banging it out in my sets, one of my favorite Heard joints. also just broke out "Lamentations" from the first Loosefingers 12" at a gig last week, fucking love that one too.

cheeseburger, Wednesday, 3 February 2016 08:59 (nine years ago)

I wrote to Souljazz a couple of years back suggesting they reissue it, possibly because it related to their Chicago House set. I got told that Heard would only licence individual tracks. So good to hear somebody's done the lp.
I had the vinyl until losing my record collection around 20 years back.
I'm not sure if that original lp was 100% legit in the first place.

New Mr. Fingers album coming out in April.
https://soundcloud.com/clone-distribution/mr-fingers-electron-taken-from-cerebral-hemispheres-lp

Under one of his most notable guises, Larry Heard is pleased to present a new album for 2018. ‘Cerebral Hemispheres’ is his first full length album as Mr. Fingers in almost 25 years. Famous as one of the most important heads in the dance music around the world, Larry has enjoyed a successful career as a producer, remixer, collaborator, vocalist and DJ spanning 35 years. Due for release on his own imprint Alleviated Records, ‘Cerebral Hemispheres’ features 14 new pieces of music that allows the listener to fully immerse themselves and dig deep into Larry’s musical world.

if it's in the vein of 2016's outer acid ep we're in for a great ride.

andrew m., Tuesday, 13 February 2018 15:11 (seven years ago)

looks like all four tracks off the EP are on the album, so yes, at least some of it will definitely be in the same vein!

is it good? it seems like he's been pretty active for ... several years now? the last thing i heard was "virtual emotion" which i really liked.

map, Sunday, 15 April 2018 03:47 (seven years ago)

There's a nice profile and cover story in this month's Wire.

MikoMcha, Sunday, 15 April 2018 05:22 (seven years ago)

It's good, (also really long!) with a marked stylistic shift halfway through. Definitely feels like it has a day side and a night side, or maybe a sunset side and a club side. I mean it sounded pretty good even after coming off a day of work and with four hours' sleep so I'm looking forward to hearing it in a more optimal state.

Matt DC, Monday, 16 April 2018 18:44 (seven years ago)

Love Larry Heard but this is waaay too Smooth Jazz in parts, which he has always touched upon in past Mr. Fingers releases, but not so heavily.

smooth jazz rules fuiud

the late great, Monday, 16 April 2018 19:52 (seven years ago)

Any time I feel like dissing smooth jazz I think of "What About This Love", which is as smooth and jazzy as dance music gets, and I could listen to it all day.

Brad, do treat yourself to the vocal version of “I’ve Been Missin’ You” that’s on Kashif’s Send Me Your Love album, if you haven’t already.
(That’s the version Spotify brought up for me, and then when I played it again off G-Force a little later it suddenly had become an instrumental)

UK weather is currently providing the optimum listening conditions for this fine lp.

calzino, Wednesday, 18 April 2018 13:03 (seven years ago)

the RA faint praising of this lp is so cloth-eared, it is not that far off something worthy of the "sprawling masterpiece" epithet ffs!

calzino, Saturday, 28 April 2018 11:54 (seven years ago)

Some of the house tracks are a bit meh but overall it's a good solid album. The smooth jazz tracks at the start totally work and are excellent springtime music, as pointed out above. This is especially worth picking up if you don't have the Mr Fingers 2016 EP because it's all on the album

paolo, Saturday, 28 April 2018 19:20 (seven years ago)

I really liked Outer Acid so I'm looking forward to checking this out

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 28 April 2018 20:07 (seven years ago)

I had a 3 hr train journey through the Scottish highlands at the weekend and this sounded incredible looking at all the coastlines and countryside. I love how intimate it all feels - the muted drums and the softness of the melodies and chords. Even though it is a really long album it feels like there's not a second wasted - every drum hit or delay effect feels like it's been placed in the exact right moment.

kieth chagrin (NickB), Thursday, 21 January 2021 21:41 (four years ago)

I’m vaguely aware of reading an interview where he mentions it was a nickname given to him as reference to his piano playing skills. I could be wrong.

mmmm, Thursday, 21 January 2021 22:26 (four years ago)

He got that nickname because anybody that doesn't like him gets the finger.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 21 January 2021 22:30 (four years ago)

kieth chagrin (NickB), Thursday, 21 January 2021 22:31 (four years ago)

henry s, Friday, 22 January 2021 19:56 (four years ago)

makes sense to me

satanist of size (map), Friday, 22 January 2021 20:09 (four years ago)

The name thing is another tricky issue, because it started off as Loose Fingers, my little brothers made up this whole Loose Fingers thing. It goes back to my tendency to grab an instrument and start faking like I knew how to play it, get on the piano and fake like I’m playing something, so I would always move my fingers fast and they started saying this “loose fingers” thing. And then when I put a record out and that’s what I ended up using for the artist name, because I didn’t know what the response was going to this stuff – it’s off the wall – and I didn’t know anything about the music business other than I hear records and I buy them, that’s pretty much the extent of what I knew. And that’s why I used that name, as like a safety net. If it turned out to be a total embarrassment, I can actually hide and say I don’t know who that Loose Fingers is. And it was modified to Mr. Fingers within one release, really. And then modified to Fingers Inc. when I teamed up with Robert.

"Introduction" is one of my fave ever albums. To my ears there's a big difference between the jazz playing / textures on that and what I heard on some of this album.
Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee)
Posted: 17 April 2018 at 12:30:21

Introduction is one of those albums that only seem to get better with time.
I was reminded of it today while listening to Kelvin Momo’s new Amukelani album - think amapiano-on-a-corner-called-jazz -
(there is a strong Larry H lineage in amapiano in general and it shines through on the regular)
…so I’m back to playing Introduction now and it’s just absolutely flawless in its gorgeous tenderness of voice and sound.
