The Mbox allows you to get audio into and out of your computer and it serves as a dongle that permits Pro Tools to run. Thus, you can record a band practice or single-track a song at home, then later mix it in Pro Tools. Some folks, such as myself, consider PT to be friendlier than Cubase for recording "live" (as opposed to, say, "sequenced") music. Some folks, such as Steve Albini, are violently opposed to PT, and think that any kinda digital recording is evil and strips music of its vitality. The detailed reasons behind the latter opinion are too long to go into in this thread, but suffice it to say that musicians, even squirrely, smelly, luddite hippies, are not of one mind on this subject.
