Who is the 21st-century Jan Hammer?

asked (by me) on this thread - come anticipate Miami Vice with me

the question requires successfully defining the attributes of an Jan Hammer, however, and after a few erased attempts I'm suddenly not sure any more, at all!

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 11:49 (nineteen years ago)

Aphex Twin.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 11:53 (nineteen years ago)

MSTRKRFT

Roughage Crew (Enrique), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 11:53 (nineteen years ago)

Moby

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 11:54 (nineteen years ago)

Tuomas says Luomo but did Jan Hammer ever go in for techno and house's droney kind of build-up and breakdown - however melodic?

xpost haha OK but same question applies - i can see both of these nailing SOME of Hammer's attributes - clean, arrogant, futuristic - but not others (i.e. shamelessly pop in its instrumentation (the flanged distorted guitar solos = the 21st-century what??))

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 11:55 (nineteen years ago)

Jan Hammer

¡Vamos a matar, Dadaismus! (Dada), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 11:55 (nineteen years ago)

oh shit it probably is Moby

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 11:55 (nineteen years ago)

don't underestimate hammer's percussive gifts -- the tom-toms in the theme.

i have a feeling the opening theme changed during 'mv' to incorporate more guitar.

Roughage Crew (Enrique), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 11:57 (nineteen years ago)

The reason I said Luomo is because they're sorta similar: ex-jazz musicians doing cool, detached electronic music.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 11:57 (nineteen years ago)

plus you're near-namesakes.

Roughage Crew (Enrique), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 11:58 (nineteen years ago)

there's a suggestive edge of sleaze and a kind of unbridled toy-box maximalism i've never gotten from Moby, though, who usually keeps things pretty tasteful (ditto Luomo)

Dada, does THE JAN still walk among us??? news to me (what's new)

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 12:01 (nineteen years ago)

i mean, Tuomas, on what planet is the Miami Vice Theme "detached"??

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 12:02 (nineteen years ago)

Why would he be dead? (Strange question)

¡Vamos a matar, Dadaismus! (Dada), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 12:03 (nineteen years ago)

Well, I mean creatively

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 12:05 (nineteen years ago)

OHHH

Roughage Crew (Enrique), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 12:06 (nineteen years ago)

If Jan's creatively dead, maybe Harald Faltermeyer isn't?

¡Vamos a matar, Dadaismus! (Dada), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 12:06 (nineteen years ago)

look that wasn't a dis, I just have no idea what the man's been up to!

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 12:07 (nineteen years ago)

Tracey i presume Tuomas was referring to 'Crockett's Theme' re detached.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 12:07 (nineteen years ago)

Rumours of Jan Hammer's death have been greatly exaggerated

¡Vamos a matar, Dadaismus! (Dada), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 12:10 (nineteen years ago)

It's not all work work work!

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 12:11 (nineteen years ago)

Wouldn't the 21st Century Jan Hammer have to be someone who cut his chops in another genre before enjoying his biggest commercial success?

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 12:14 (nineteen years ago)

In that case, Fatboy Slim?

¡Vamos a matar, Dadaismus! (Dada), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 12:15 (nineteen years ago)

Crazy Frog

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 12:16 (nineteen years ago)

i think Fatboy Slim actually wins!? i can't think of anything else that can top it (but what's new)

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 12:17 (nineteen years ago)

i was gonna say Mylo. then Royksopp!

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 12:23 (nineteen years ago)

Wouldn't the 21st Century Jan Hammer have to be someone who cut his chops in another genre before enjoying his biggest commercial success?

that kinda applies to Moby tho who started off in punk band, then rave, then...whatever the hell you call his stuff now - blandtronica?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 12:24 (nineteen years ago)

Michael Mann has settled on the Rza, right?

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 12:35 (nineteen years ago)

yeaaaaah boyee.

er, yes.

Roughage Crew (Enrique), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 12:44 (nineteen years ago)

Am I the only one who doesn't immediately think Miami Vice when Jan gets brought up? I mean, The Mahavishnu Orchestra people...

Who's the 21st century Paul Hardcastle might be more appropriate?

Rev. PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie 2), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 13:50 (nineteen years ago)

Am I the only one who doesn't immediately think Miami Vice when Jan gets brought up? I mean, The Mahavishnu Orchestra people...

... yeah but trying whistling one of their tunes on the way to work in the morning

¡Vamos a matar, Dadaismus! (Dada), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 13:58 (nineteen years ago)

Well that justifies the thread.

Rev. PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie 2), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 13:59 (nineteen years ago)

Mahavishnu Orchestra - is that that thing w/John McLaughlin and Al DiMeola?? I can't stand that stuff

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 14:08 (nineteen years ago)

Al DiMeola wasn't in them was he? Wasn't he in Return To Forever?

¡Vamos a matar, Dadaismus! (Dada), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 14:12 (nineteen years ago)

Mahavishnu Orchestra - is that that thing w/John McLaughlin and Al DiMeola?? I can't stand that stuff

So then yes, you're right. Fatboy Slim.

Rev. PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie 2), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 14:19 (nineteen years ago)

here's jan hammer here tearing it up with jeff beck in 85. jeff is so cool he gets away with the relaxed fit leather pants and pink bowling shirt. jan gets away with nothing. the comments are amazing.

dan (dan), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 14:49 (nineteen years ago)

haha OK Pappa - touché

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 14:54 (nineteen years ago)

First thing I think about Jan is "Don't You Know" from the Soul of Science comp.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 16:19 (nineteen years ago)

>mahavishnu's first two records slay!

All the original-lineup stuff is great, especially the live album.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 16:50 (nineteen years ago)

Jan's work on the first Billy Cobham LP is pretty great too.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 16:55 (nineteen years ago)

All the original-lineup stuff is great, especially the live album.

kool i've only heard inner mounting and birds o' fiyah...i'll have to check the other orig. linup stuff.

M@tt He1geson, Rendolent Ding-Dong (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 17:00 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, cut poor Jan some slack. (Sorry.)

Andy_K (Andy_K), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 17:29 (nineteen years ago)

I wuv Jan, just not the Mahavishnu Orchestra.

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 17:38 (nineteen years ago)

It's understandable.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 17:58 (nineteen years ago)

Mahavishnu Orchestra - is that that thing w/John McLaughlin and Al DiMeola?? I can't stand that stuff

Clearly Kaada is the new Jan Hammer. Plays keys; started out in Cloroform, a sorta experimental jazzy type of rock thing; went on to start a snazzy pop career of some sort and does loads of soundtracks.

Plus, the Norwegian John Erik Kaada's name sounds kinda American, while [google]...uh, Czech...Jan Hammer's name sounds rather Norwegian. OK, nevermind that then.

Øystein (Øystein), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 18:43 (nineteen years ago)

Good call on Kaada there, although he could do with some Michael Mann action. Anyway, this is my favourite bit from the comments section of that Beck / Hammer Youtube thing mentioned above :

Actually this is 1985, the original London Arms concert was 1983. Simon Phillips is using the Tama Artstar kit that came out in 83 and by 87 he was using the Ferrari red Artstar 2. If it was 77 he'd be using a Ludwig Octoplus and I believe his earliest stuff with Jeff was There and Back and he was playing a silver Tama Fibrestar then. This is not the Jan Hammer group, he is just guesting at the gig, as he did at a Japanese Beck concert. Great line-up.

Matt #2 (Matt #2), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 18:58 (nineteen years ago)

(Al diMeola wasn't in Mahavishnu Orchestra, although he did some acoustic flamenco-ish records with McLaughlin and Paco deLucia.)

Sundar (sundar), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 20:14 (nineteen years ago)

That's all very interesting but what's the story with Neal Schon's penis?

dr lulu (dr lulu), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 20:19 (nineteen years ago)

Andy_K (Andy_K), Thursday, 25 January 2007 22:46 (eighteen years ago)

Ward OTM.

Also: the Elvin Jones albums, Horacee Arnold's Tales of the Exonerated Flee, Billy Cobham's Spectrum, Harvey Mason's Earth Mover...

Andy_K (Andy_K), Thursday, 25 January 2007 23:04 (eighteen years ago)

I have a Mahavishnu cover of "Blue Rondo a la Turk" on my 'puter at home that he completely SLAYS. It also has that French violinist dude that played with Zappa.

blotter Budweiser Hackeysadk (nickalicious), Thursday, 25 January 2007 23:09 (eighteen years ago)

I'd like to hear that. I sorta forgot that he was the dude in Mahavishnu.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 25 January 2007 23:11 (eighteen years ago)

It has Billy Cobham on it too. I mean, I've never seen liner notes or anything (it's LIVE), but you can tell it's Billy Cobham.

blotter Budweiser Hackeysadk (nickalicious), Thursday, 25 January 2007 23:14 (eighteen years ago)

the knight rider theme is quite stirring

the table is the table (treesessplode), Friday, 26 January 2007 00:05 (eighteen years ago)

I used to have an 8*10 signed glossy of his (met him at some convention when I was a star-struck raving Mahavishnu fanboy/newbie). Alas, I eventually got rid of it.

Recently, I picked up the reissue of Like Children. Great to hear it on CD finally. "I Remember Me" and "Giving in Gently --> I Wonder" = like gold.
