Boris' Pink - LP version differences

Late-adopter geek-bait question/essay.

Just picked up the 2LP vinyl version of the Southern Lord release of Boris' Pink (I've also got a year-old copy of the Japanese ceedee which I've listened to tons of times).

The Southern Lord vinyl version is VERY different, and I was wondering whether anyone else had thoughts on this.

First of all, the vinyl is sequenced differently. "Farewell" no longer opens the record with 7 minutes of shoegaze drone. Instead, Pink now opens with the much more upbeat "Pink", and the first LP contains all of the albums' "rock songs." The first LP concludes with "Psuedo-Bread" (in a significantly extended version -- about four minutes of churning, feedbacky bogmuck added to the coda).

This segues nicely into LP 2, which contains all the more ambient and drony tunes on "Pink". This disc opens with a 10-minute version of "My Machine" (which only ran about two minutes on the original release), and the album still ends with the epic "Just Abandoned Myself" (in an "epic-er" version that adds about EIGHT minutes to the track's running time). Sandwiched in between, at the bottom of side 3, is former album opener "Farewell".

Anyway, while I loved the original CD, I think this is a much, much better record. While the last three minues (or so) of "My Machine" are a nearly-inaudible drag, for the most part, this is a much more effective and sensible way to present these songs. Puts the band's ambient/dream-drone tendencies on an equal par with their heavy rocks, and lets you consider these two more-or-less distinct aspects separately. Plus, you get something like 18 minutes more music!

Weird. Why'd they do it this way? Just to soak the fans? (Probably...) And does the SL ceedee replicate the vinyl sequencing/length, or is is like the original CD? Or is it something else entirely? Gaaaah!

Kinda cool, kinda annoying...

As far as i know the SL vinyl is supposed to be like the japanese cd version and not the japanese vinyl on inoxia.
Havent got my SL pink vinyl yet.

SL CD i mean is supposed to be like the japanese vinyl version.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 14:51 (nineteen years ago)

Lemme get this straight:

1) Japanese CD comes out sometime in late 2005.
2) Japanese LP (released later that winter) is a little longer.
3) US CD (released the following spring) replicates the Japanese LP.
4) US LP (released in the summer of 2006) is the longest yet.

It's all to fucking confusing -- and a greedy, shitty scam tactic besides. Just release the goddam album THE WAY YOU WANT IT TO BE and call it a fucking day.

The (Southern Lord) 2LP version is better than the Inoxia CD. Fine. I'm glad I have it. But it all woulda fit on one CD in the first place.

Key-riced.

fuckfuckingfuckedfucker (fuckfuckingfuckedfucker), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 15:35 (nineteen years ago)

They all have different cover art too!

Mike Dixn (Mike Dixon), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 15:57 (nineteen years ago)

your stance is so reactionary! when I buy multiple-format releases, I don't feel "soaked" or "ripped off" - I get to indulge my record-collecting/record-obsessing side, and it's fun. You don't enjoy that side of things? Then just buy one and ignore the rest, wtf - the extra couple thou Boris is gonna make offa this ain't gonna make any of 'em rich, it's just a way to have fun with the release & people who complain that they "have to" buy every copy are lying to themselves: nobody's got a goddamn gun to yr head

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 16:06 (nineteen years ago)

The inoxia lp cost $40 when it came out and was limited to 500 copies.
Which I have.
Theres 2 versions of Pink vinyl on Southern Lord.
2000 of Solid pink 180g Double Vinyl.(Mail order only)
2000 of clear pink double vinyl in stores.

Is the "surprise envelope" - acid tabs like with the cd version?(i dont have japanese or SL cd). I dont expect my SL vinyl to come until the weekend at earliest.

Do you have the Mabuta No Ura japanese or brazillian version? (theres 2 brazillian versions ordinary cd and a very ltd box set which theres only 200 of, which again was very expensive at $40)

If you think thats bad there was 5 different colours of Sunn o))) black one, and theres also now a pic disk.
The last Khanate album on Hydrahead(hydrahead also make you buy a tshirt or slipmat with all pre orders) had 5 different colours too.
Isis and Red Sparowes have US and Euro pressings with multiple colour versions.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 16:06 (nineteen years ago)

Boris are gambling with their release strategy. They're playing a cat & mouse game with hardcore collectors & hipsters. Maybe it's working (the hype still seems to be rolling in their favor), but I think by now that more people are probably pissed and/or bored than intrigued.

Don't bug me when bands release vinyl in a variety of colors, or "deluxe editions" of CDs with elaborate packaging and bonus discs. That kind of thing appeals strictly to collectors and megafans, who seem perfectly happy to have new doodads to sink their disposable income into. Like the idiots that buy collectible vinyl figures.

The Boris approach, however, is a bit sneakier. Boris, lately, release a shorter version of the album, then slowly trickle out longer and longer versions in overseas and alternate-media releases.

It's not a question of packaging, which I don't give a shit about, but one of (seemingly) releasing an "edited" version of the album first, and then later releasing the full-blown "director's cut".

I mean, I love vinyl records, and was bummed to have missed out on the inoxia release. So, I'm happy to have the SL vinyl. But I paid about $30 bucks for that import CD, and if I wasn't a vinyl guy, I'd be fucking PISSED.

What, I have to wait for yet another "perfect version" CD release just to own the complete text of a record that I've shelled plenty of good money for? Bogus. Bogus bogus bogus.

Put extra material on the CD or LP? Fine. Release a limited edition with a bonus disc? Fine.

But don't keep releasing and rereleasing the same record in different versions. The "Mabuta No Ura" thing was especially annoying, 'cuz the record was so lackluster. I didn't buy it in ANY version, 'cuz I'm not an investor or a collector. I just like good records.

I think they're killing their own momentum with this shit.

fuckfuckingfuckedfucker (fuckfuckingfuckedfucker), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 18:28 (nineteen years ago)

The Japanese 2xLP, which I own, has the same music as the Southern Lord 2xLP release. They are both the longest versions of the album. The Japanese CD is shorter than the Southern Lord CD release, which is shorter than the 2xLP version.

Anybody listen to The Thing Which Solomon Overlooked 2 and 3 LP's? They're actually really great and deserve much more attention. The Vein LP should be released on Important very soon.

Harpal (harpal), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 18:43 (nineteen years ago)

Boris went out of their way to guarantee that very few people would be able to listen to or comment on "The Thing Which Solomon Overlooked".

Again, it's part of the "marketing strategy." And yeah, they're GREAT records. But again, the whole thing leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

fuckfuckingfuckedfucker (fuckfuckingfuckedfucker), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 18:56 (nineteen years ago)

Of course theres 2 different colours of Vol 2 and 3.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 20:04 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe this is the wrong place to bring this up, but can anyone explain why people do such limited runs of vinyl when there's such a big, static upfront cost for separate vinyl mastering and making the presser and getting a test copy? Seems like since you have to shell out $1000 or whatever no matter how many copies you make, why then make like 200?

Eppy (Eppy), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 20:45 (nineteen years ago)

Uh... because once you have the mothers you can press all you want...?

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 20:47 (nineteen years ago)

To guarantee it sells out. If there was 5000 copies people dont buy right away, so theres less hype.
By creating ltd runs it gets a hardcore fanbase buying everything straight away.
Im not so sure the hardcore fanbase would be so large if it was easy to get the vinyls. Its a collectors thing.

x-post.

yes. Theres akways ltd repressings. On different colours so collectors/hardcore fans will buy again.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 20:49 (nineteen years ago)

you can sell like 500 of anything in an instant, but selling twice that amount takes time. Maybe shelf space is precious.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 20:56 (nineteen years ago)

again, I think the (pervasive, circular) conviction that this style of release strategy is about maximizing profits is a hopelessly naive conviction rooted in weird-ass conspiracy theory/second-guessing-game

"oh boy - if we really soak the fan boys, we'll make an extra 2 g's to share amongst ourselves!" -it's more likely entirely about aesthetics

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 21:04 (nineteen years ago)

records don't make significant profits at these levels

Alicia Fucking Silverstone (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 21:11 (nineteen years ago)

Limited editions, different versions, etc., makes it more fun to me. It's like Stereolab's trademark. But then I don't mind loose ends and I'm not a completist.

Mark (MarkR), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 21:15 (nineteen years ago)

records don't make significant profits at these levels

that's kinda my point - profiteering is the motive being ascribed, but for real? "oh yeah I totally PWN3D that fanboy, now I have five bucks"

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 21:24 (nineteen years ago)

apologists.

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 21:25 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think it's about bottom-line profits at all. Maybe Boris have a fantasy that by building up their geek cred with all this limited-edition bullshit, they'll slowly seep into mass consciousness and one day be able to shift a million units on bulletproof style points alone...

But I doubt it. I don't think that's the master plan. I think it IS all about aesthetics: Boris are working the aesthetics of cool. The, "you want me, but you can't have me," tactics are stylish, and they're what the art world has always relied on to create "value" and drive demand. Nothing wrong with that, right?

Right. But while big profits clearly aren't the driving factor, there is a "conspiracy angle" to Boris' strategy: I think they're very intentionally manipulating their (kinda scarily devoted) fanbase in order to build word-of-mouth among hipsters, critics and other tastemakers. And it's working like gangbusters.

Therefore, it kinda pisses me off. As a fan, I feel manipulated and used. If your music is worth hearing, make it available to me.

I don't give a shit about "collectability." And I don't have a ton of money to throw around. In this latter sense (if not the former), I suspect I'm representative of the band's fanbase. And I wish they'd quit jerking me around.

fuckfuckingfuckedfucker (fuckfuckingfuckedfucker), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 22:11 (nineteen years ago)

BORIS = MUSLIMGAUZE

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 22:37 (nineteen years ago)

If anyone is interested Inoxia are due to start selling the Dronevil cd(with bonus tracks) anytime now.
Be prepared to forkout $40 though.(waiting to get it on import will be far more expensive). Inoxia shipping is very reasonable usually, when I bought the Mabuta lp it was $2 shipping from japan to uk)

My Boris - Pink lp arrived today in the mail. It looks great but i've not played it yet.

i know your nuts hurt! who's laughing? (contenderizer), Thursday, 6 September 2012 22:02 (twelve years ago)

southern lord

i aint into the transpotter stuff, as this is the first album i've heard by them.

guess i need to investigate more !

mark e, Thursday, 6 September 2012 22:05 (twelve years ago)

pink isn't a typical southern lord release though. much more pop than most of the stuff they put out.

i know your nuts hurt! who's laughing? (contenderizer), Thursday, 6 September 2012 22:07 (twelve years ago)

Oh man and this is like their sixth or seventh best album! Depending on what you like most about them I can recommend a few directions to head in next.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 6 September 2012 22:08 (twelve years ago)

yeah, would agree. otoh, it's the transition point between older noise/doom boris and newer pop/psych boris, so it's a pretty good place to start, imo.

i know your nuts hurt! who's laughing? (contenderizer), Thursday, 6 September 2012 22:10 (twelve years ago)

I think it and Smile may be what he likes best then the albums after, knowing mark. But I will try to get him into the earlier stuff including Heavy Rocks (1) (they released another album last year called Heavy Rocks which is a different album completely) and Akuma No Uta. I will leave the best 3 Absolutego,Flood and Amplifier Worship til the end.

VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Thursday, 6 September 2012 22:11 (twelve years ago)

Oh yeah, its a great starting point for sure. I'd just say there are lots of directions to branch off in. I think he might also really like the collab with Michio Kurihara that has one of my favorite guitar solos ever on it.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 6 September 2012 22:16 (twelve years ago)

suspect i'm more about the pop/noise aspect .. though the 20 minute closer is the track that pleases me the most.

mark e, Thursday, 6 September 2012 22:16 (twelve years ago)

speaking of boris and their wacky ways, has anyone heard the two long bonus tracks on the LP version of Rainbow? are they rockin'? i really like that album, but haven't heard those.

yeah, "just abandoned myself" kicks ass, but it's pretty unique in their catalog

phew : 'woman on the screen'

now that i could have a lot more of.

suspect they dont do the uptempo garage thing too often then ?

mark e, Thursday, 6 September 2012 22:25 (twelve years ago)

has anyone heard the two long bonus tracks on the LP version of Rainbow?

i've only got the standard LP, so no, but i'm downloading them as we speak. thanks for the reminder!

not really, no. the best albums for that are pink and akuma no uta. and maybe the original heavy rocks, though that's more medium tempo 70s metal.

somebody got em on slsk, alls i know. will leonardo if they're decent.

i know your nuts hurt! who's laughing? (contenderizer), Thursday, 6 September 2012 22:49 (twelve years ago)

okay, y'all. turns out that the "bonus tracks" are two 20-minute low-intensity drones. no beats, peaks, kurihara solos or nothing. just 40 minutes worth of new age vacuum cleaner tones. worse, they're very poorly ripped from vinyl, quiet but w/ lots of surface noise. if anyone still wants them, i'll post dropbox links to leonardo, but i won't be listening to them again.
