I think I've read this, but I can't recall how it compares with Nicholas Schaffner's "The Beatles Forever," which has lots of "then I saw the White Album in Korvettes at Xmas '68"-style stuff . . .

Way more personal than the Schaffner book.

I think it was the first rock book I read, out of the library in the late '70s, and it was really interesting to me then. (I was in grade school at the time.) I loved how he admitted hating the Beatles for "growing up" and getting "serious," how he stopped being a fan for a little while when Rubber Soul came out, on the basis of the album cover alone. That stuck with me more than anything, that highly personal and admittedly flawed response a popular music phenomenon: He later became a fan again, once he'd done some growing up himself.

Yeah I echo Pete's thoughts.. read it in grade school when my uncle gave me his stack of Beatles books. It does get a little too autobiographical at times... when he's talking about prom night or whatever it's like "who cares, buddy?"

Hmmm... is there a Beatles book s/d thread?
