― acrobat, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 09:27 (eighteen years ago)

― That one guy that hit it and quit it, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 09:33 (eighteen years ago)
mike skinner is the great "what were we thinking?" story of the decade.
― That one guy that hit it and quit it, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 09:34 (eighteen years ago)
I tried telling you all that at the time, but would you listen?

― acrobat, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 09:41 (eighteen years ago)
Sterling Clover RIP, heaven needed some herb to claim that Kardinal Offishal was one of the greatest lyricists of all time.
― Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 09:43 (eighteen years ago)
Who's that other guy? Just Jack!
― Tom D., Tuesday, 4 September 2007 09:44 (eighteen years ago)
I'm not sure what those two have in common. Just Jack is kind of inoffensive. Jamie T is very offensive.
― acrobat, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 10:13 (eighteen years ago)

other than this, everyone OTM. the streets' first two album ratings on metacritic = HOW COULD SO MUCH WOOL BE PULLED OVER SO MANY EYES????
i guess the answer is that all the critics are sheep who can't be seen dead hating on this hip new act. tossers.
― Just got offed, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 10:40 (eighteen years ago)
I'm not sure you are right.

Please don't
― Tom D., Tuesday, 4 September 2007 10:53 (eighteen years ago)
Music criticism really sucked before I came along.
― Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 10:55 (eighteen years ago)
The Streets - Original Pirate Material E+
The Streets are rubbish. "Walking down the street, eating some chips, saw myself a bird, fancied giving her one" etc etc Utter toss. JJ72, on the other hand, produced such incredible bursts of pop perfection as "Snow" and "Oxygen".
They win hands down.

"She's a perfect 10, but she wears a 12"
easily a Skinner line
― blueski, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 12:15 (eighteen years ago)
Just Jack is kind of inoffensive.
I seriously (as opposed to funnily) have convulsions when his songs come on the radio.
― nathalie, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 12:20 (eighteen years ago)
When i read stevem repping for OPM i imediately thought of Heaven is a Half Pipe...

there is not one thing to be said in his defence, LOCK DTI FOREVER
― Just got offed, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 19:35 (eighteen years ago)
"Stella" really is a remarkably dreadful song. He raps like some sort of German novelty pop song circa 1995.
― Dom Passantino, Saturday, 3 November 2007 16:01 (seventeen years ago)
"Jamie T is a storyteller, a raconteur. His songs carry all the clutter and dust, the rattle and roll and restlessness of real life"
Erm....

Clearly, setting myself up for taking a lot of shit for this, but I thought Panic Prevention had some really strong moments...Never quite saw it as a Mike Skinner thing, so much as urban sonic pastiche pop. His voice is a bit much at times but still...Calm Down Dearest/So Lonely Was the Ballad/Sheila/If You've Got the Money are far more interesting than he's made out to be here. And the vocal tics strike me as palatable in the same way Shakira's are...you can almost hear him relishing the sound and taste of the words as he twists his mouth around them.
Anyway, the new one - Kings and Queens - tones down the vocal histrionics and makes it more 'palatable' if that's what you're after. More tunes, less rapping, and a strange sort of folk-turn in the middle of the album that he pulls off better than I would have expected. I don't remember much after 'Spider's Web' but that could honestly be because I've been spending so much time with the first half - 368, Hocus Pocus, Sticks 'n' Stones, and Chaka Demus are a perfect run of potential singles...alternatingly raucous, rough, ramshackle and polished but all earworms in their own ways. Chaka Demus especially, these days.
Also, Sticks 'n' Stones B-side "Dance of the Young Professionals" jacks the same Brahms piece as 'Upper Clapton Dance' and acquits itself quite well.

I saw him on Jonathan Ross, miraculously I'd managed to not hear him before. Unfathomably bad, Ross was justifying him like "this is what the kids like now" To boot he came over as smug and pretentious. The single Chaka Demus, can't make out if it's about racism (or racist) or unrequited love. His voice is better recorded live for sure. He's postponed his tour due to laryngitis.
