Out in sptember. Relapse have a 7" single with 2 new songs on order now(Album is on Warners i think)

You can listen to the single here http://streamos.wbr.com/wmedia/wbr/mastodon/audio/mastodon_002_crystal-skull_128.wax

So who is excited?

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Friday, 7 July 2006 15:32 (nineteen years ago)

And no, i didnt call them "the mastodon" before anyone says it.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Friday, 7 July 2006 15:41 (nineteen years ago)

Hokay. That rules. I was kinda worried that they were gonna go all soft on us. Love the war metal bullshit. Most hirsute. And how many times can you say "blood" in one song? Solo shreds + no fear of the butt = proper attitude. Fuck jazz.

Noteworthy passages:

"Into the black hole
Searching for crystal
Making the blades bleed"

"Ride through the guantlet
Covered in blood-sucking flies"

fuckfuckingfuckedfucker (fuckfuckingfuckedfucker), Friday, 7 July 2006 15:51 (nineteen years ago)

Listened to that three times in quick succession, by the way. Dug it on the first pass, and it got better every time.

Color me anticipatory. (Aniticipatorily?)

fuckfuckingfuckedfucker (fuckfuckingfuckedfucker), Friday, 7 July 2006 15:53 (nineteen years ago)

Gods, of course. This should be great.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 7 July 2006 16:09 (nineteen years ago)

I am anticipatory as well

Bill Magill (Bill Magill), Friday, 7 July 2006 17:24 (nineteen years ago)

I'm sure they played a new song when i saw them last year with High On Fire. Dunno if it was this though.

I envy you people who will get promos.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Friday, 7 July 2006 17:50 (nineteen years ago)

This song is growing on me.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 8 July 2006 18:36 (nineteen years ago)

starts off kind like a late-max sepultura song (the drums). sounds like mastodon. i hope there's more killer and less filler on the next album.

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Saturday, 8 July 2006 23:03 (nineteen years ago)

New song = flawless, as always.

Does anyone know what became of the Mastodon DVD? It got reviewed everywhere, but then would seem to have been pulled off the release schedules for no apparent reason.

M Carty (mj_c), Sunday, 9 July 2006 05:50 (nineteen years ago)

Ned got a promo and its still up for sale on the relapse site. I didn't buy it as I'm not much of a dvd/video fan myself.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Sunday, 9 July 2006 13:45 (nineteen years ago)

The Mastodon DVD was released and is available straight from Relapse Records (www.relapse.com). I've got it, and it is sweet.

I'm looking forward to this album a lot. I don't think Leviathan had any filler on it, despite what the person a few people up said.

MASTODON FAN SINCE 2001 WOOOO

digestion (digestion), Sunday, 9 July 2006 15:40 (nineteen years ago)

Wow, I had no idea they had a new album coming out so soon. The single is simply fantastic.

Harpal (harpal), Sunday, 9 July 2006 16:12 (nineteen years ago)

Thanks, I'll go and check out the Relapse site then! I thought the UK release at least had been pulled as I had it ordered from amazon.co.uk and all mention of it just completely disappeared from the site. Hopefully I can get hold of it at last, so cheers!

M Carty (mj_c), Sunday, 9 July 2006 16:33 (nineteen years ago)

Let me know if its worth buying.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Sunday, 9 July 2006 17:16 (nineteen years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 17 July 2006 14:00 (nineteen years ago)

converge and the bronx? guess i'll sit this round out.

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Monday, 17 July 2006 14:48 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, the opening bands weren't totally setting my world on fire there...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 17 July 2006 15:05 (nineteen years ago)

That's an ass line-up. Mastodon should tour with Neurosis.

ng-unit (ng-unit), Monday, 17 July 2006 15:53 (nineteen years ago)

Blood Mountain...the awesomest Disneyland ride ever!

the power of latebloomer compels you (latebloomer), Monday, 17 July 2006 17:28 (nineteen years ago)

Whats wrong with Converge?

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Monday, 17 July 2006 18:27 (nineteen years ago)

Their vocalist sounds like he's saying "wahh" every other line. Also, most of their songs are boring.

lrsn (larssen), Monday, 17 July 2006 18:56 (nineteen years ago)

And promo kicks even more into overdrive -- the making of the album!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 14:50 (nineteen years ago)

Hey!!

world's loneliest converge fan (scott seward), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 15:55 (nineteen years ago)

two weeks pass...
I've heard bits of other tracks and it sounds really good.
Anyone heard the whole thing?

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Sunday, 6 August 2006 15:45 (nineteen years ago)

saw a free mastodon/slayer show a couple weeks ago - mastodon blew slayer off the stage IMO. the new songs sound great

6335 (6335), Sunday, 6 August 2006 16:38 (nineteen years ago)

having heard three tracks from this now i just think i'm not really into the new (post-remission) mastodon sound. "capillarian crest" was alright, though.

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Sunday, 6 August 2006 16:43 (nineteen years ago)

Bladecatcher is excellent. Apparently theres no long tracks this time.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Sunday, 6 August 2006 16:53 (nineteen years ago)

is the new mastodon album as good as the new ahab album? the new ahab album has a painting on the cover of a monstrous white whale just like mastodon's last album, except ahab's whale is capsizing FOUR longboats and it hasn't even gotten to the ship yet! that's how heavy they are! and i think i already like them more than mastodon. but i like mastodon. ahab feeds my craving for massive funeral doom drumbeats. like swans rekkerds, they make me fear for my speaker's lives.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 6 August 2006 16:59 (nineteen years ago)

I have a bad feeling that Blood Mountain is going to make me pine for the days of Leviathan. "Capillarian Crest", streaming off their MySpace page, is still boring to me after repeated listens. I hope the rest of the record takes off after a slow start, but I'm not holding my breath.

nancyboy (nancyboy), Sunday, 6 August 2006 20:12 (nineteen years ago)

I have this album. It's excellent. It may not quite match Leviathan, but it makes a damn good crack at it. Bladecatcher is, indeed, a f'kin stormer. This'll probably be in my top 10 come the end of the year

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Sunday, 6 August 2006 20:46 (nineteen years ago)

Album is definitely a grower. Needs several plays to just start to sink in. They wont top Remission so its probably not even worth trying to make it again. This definitely isn't Leviathan part 2 either. Lack of long songs for a start.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Sunday, 6 August 2006 20:49 (nineteen years ago)

Quite a few stand out songs are sinking in now. I think i'm gonna really like this album. It really does get better with each listen.
Quite a lot of people who didn't like Leviathan seem to like this album.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Monday, 7 August 2006 14:22 (nineteen years ago)

I can't understand anyone not liking Leviathan. On the other hand, Remission did nothing for me; it seemed like mere punish-the-listener heavy-for-the-sake-of-being-heavy, and I don't need that in my life.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Monday, 7 August 2006 19:30 (nineteen years ago)

it seemed like mere punish-the-listener heavy-for-the-sake-of-being-heavy, and I don't need that in my life.

I DO!!!

yours fondly, harshaw. (mrgn), Monday, 7 August 2006 20:06 (nineteen years ago)

SECONDED!!!!

i don't know, man, people who act like leviathan was this huge revelation - they tuned up (i think), tightened up their songwriting and probably spent more money on production. the material isn't that different.

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Monday, 7 August 2006 20:24 (nineteen years ago)

Both really great albums but on 1st couple of listens this might be up there with them.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Monday, 7 August 2006 20:31 (nineteen years ago)

First impression: still not a huge fan of the clean vox, but this rules anyway!

Shame about the lame cover:

Alan N (Alan N), Monday, 7 August 2006 22:20 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, looks like a sketch for an unused bad guy from big trouble in little china.

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Tuesday, 8 August 2006 00:12 (nineteen years ago)

This is a bad thing?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 8 August 2006 00:31 (nineteen years ago)

And I honestly believed the dude who did Mastodon's art could actually not make a mistake...

Sean Braud1s (Sean Braudis), Tuesday, 8 August 2006 00:34 (nineteen years ago)

i listened to this today. it was pretty mediocre.

chaki (chaki), Tuesday, 8 August 2006 00:36 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think this is anything mind-blowing or surprising from what I can tell (leak is terrible quality), but I've liked everything Mastodon has released so far and this fits with all of that. Holding off on a third listen until I can get the CD.

"punish-the-listener heavy-for-the-sake-of-being-heavy"

Remission is all about catchy songs. Don't you like Eyehategod??

lrsn (larssen), Tuesday, 8 August 2006 17:02 (nineteen years ago)

I pre-ordered my vinyl. The vinyl is being released by Relapse.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 15:46 (nineteen years ago)

they've done a good job of not letting this leak yet

pinder (pinder), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 16:03 (nineteen years ago)

lol

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 16:29 (nineteen years ago)

So awesome. Thank you for leaking it, British guy.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 16:40 (nineteen years ago)

I wonder if he will get prosecuted?

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 16:56 (nineteen years ago)

four weeks pass...
I'm about five songs in, and it pains me to say that this doesn't seem very good. The various attempts at less-metal singing fucking blow.

Sean Braud1s (Sean Braudis), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 14:59 (eighteen years ago)

Not my usual scene but this rocks and gets better each time.
Only the occasional duff 'metal' puts me off- those lazy harmonised guitars/vox - but on the whole this is great refreshing music.

Jessie the Drunk Dutch Mountain Dog (Jessie the Drunk Dutch Mountai), Saturday, 23 September 2006 21:58 (eighteen years ago)

I wonder how much this sold in its 1st week.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 23 September 2006 22:07 (eighteen years ago)

one year passes...

So this was bad, huh?

Jordan, Friday, 5 October 2007 21:31 (seventeen years ago)

No, it was fucking great!!!
