"Run For Your Life": the shitty Beatles compilation experiment

Message Bookmarked

1.Assess every studio album by the Beatles

2.Pick what you feel is the worst song on each album

3.Put these songs onto one compilation.. whether it's 1 or 2 CD(r)s. Order them however you want (although chronological is as good a criterium as any, I guess.)

4.Assess the songs from listening to this compilation, as opposed to listening to them in the context of their respective studio album

5.Do you feel differently about the songs now?

San Diva Gyna (and a Masala DOsaNUT on the side) (donut), Friday, 7 July 2006 16:08 (nineteen years ago)

So it's not just a clever name?

magnagardner (New Media Intern), Friday, 7 July 2006 16:10 (nineteen years ago)

Here's mine, not counting "Yellow Submarine":

"P.S. I Love You"
"Hold Me Tight"
"Can't Buy Me Love"
"Mr. Moonlight"
"Another Girl"
"Michelle"
"Love You To"
"She's Leaving Home"
"Your Mother Should Know"
"Revolution 9"
"Maxwell's Silver Hammer"
"For You Blue"

Doesn't make me feel differently about the songs, but makes me realize that the Beatles didn't record many outright duds.

Jim M (jmcgaw), Friday, 7 July 2006 17:34 (nineteen years ago)

who are these bettles?

Rev. PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie 2), Friday, 7 July 2006 17:36 (nineteen years ago)

"For You Blue"
"Your Mother Should Know"

Two of my all-time Beatle faves!

Mine:

P.S. I Love You
Devil In Her Heart
Tell Me Why
Mr. Moonlight
Tell Me What You See
What Goes On
Love You To
A Day in the Life
Revolution 9 (Bonus track: Don't Pass Me By)
Her Majesty
Dig A Pony

Slightly (hah) uneven album. Some of the songs I put on here I still enjoy when I hear them, like Love You To and Devil in her Heart. For some reason I've never worshipped A Day in the Life like other people do, but I suppose listening to it in this context would fix that.

musically (musically), Friday, 7 July 2006 18:21 (nineteen years ago)

Omg, dude, "Dig a Pony" is the best thing on that album.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 7 July 2006 18:42 (nineteen years ago)

i have nothing to contribute, really, except that reading this thread title put Iron Maiden in my head for the first time in a while.

thanks, guys!

gbx (skowly), Friday, 7 July 2006 18:46 (nineteen years ago)

Omg, dude, "Dig a Pony" is the best thing on that album.

It's true.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Friday, 7 July 2006 18:48 (nineteen years ago)

Oh lord no.

musically (musically), Friday, 7 July 2006 19:09 (nineteen years ago)

Nabisco is making me question the existence of god here. (In otherwards, I'm wondering if I'm actually alive.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 7 July 2006 19:28 (nineteen years ago)

In order of best to worst, I'm pretty sure that record runs something like:

Dig a Pony
Across the Universe
Two of Us
Maggie Mae
I Me Mine
One after 909
Get Back
I've Got a Feeling
Dig It
Let it Be
The Long and Winding Road

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 7 July 2006 19:48 (nineteen years ago)

Actually, depending on the day, I might put "The Long and Winding Road" up around "I Me Mine," especially if you could somehow get like Glen Campbell to sing it or something.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 7 July 2006 19:50 (nineteen years ago)

The version on Let It Be...Naked is nice.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 7 July 2006 20:07 (nineteen years ago)

(version of "Long and Winding Road," that is)

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 7 July 2006 20:07 (nineteen years ago)

I just love "I've Got a Feeling". Macca's rock scream sounds so good on that jam.

QuantumNoise (Justin Farrar), Friday, 7 July 2006 20:11 (nineteen years ago)

Tiny: Wanye! How you doin'?
Wayne Campbell: Hey Tiny, who's playing today?
Tiny: Jolly Green Giants and the Shitty Beatles.
Wayne Campbell: Shitty Beatles? Are they any good?
Tiny: They suck!
Wayne Campbell: Then it's not just a clever name.

autovac (autovac), Friday, 7 July 2006 20:13 (nineteen years ago)

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 7 July 2006 20:14 (nineteen years ago)

"Michelle"

Michelle?! For serious?

Steve Go1dberg (Steve Schneeberg), Friday, 7 July 2006 20:33 (nineteen years ago)

P.S. I Love You
Devil In Her Heart
Tell Me Why
Mr. Moonlight
Tell Me What You See
What Goes On
Love You To
A Day in the Life
Revolution 9 (Bonus track: Don't Pass Me By)
Her Majesty
Dig A Pony

I think "Her Majesty" is my favorite Beatles song.

picking a 'worst' form with the beatles and a hard day's night was hard tim! (narrowing it down to just one for the white album and abbey road was nearly as hard)(where's yr list btw?)(xpost)

OK. Just ends up being like half a Ringo album, though.

McCartney's spirit and aloofness from the subject matter are why I don't hear things like "Yesterday" and "Fool on the Hill" as maudlin but as a part of the Beatles' Surrealism instead.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 7 July 2006 21:57 (nineteen years ago)

Or if they are maudlin than it is an objectified "maudlin" in the service of their Surrealist aesthetic.

Thanks - I have a whole unpublished book on the subject of psychedelic music and Surrealism. Main premise of the thing is that Surrealism is about the OBJECT, so it not only deals with objects in psychedelic music but objectified situations, objectified people, etc. (x-posts to Rickey)

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 7 July 2006 22:46 (nineteen years ago)

This exercise has made me re-evaluate what I think is the best Beatles LP. For example, I tend to think Rubber Soul, "the White Album" , or Revolver is the best. However, I don't have a problem picking the worse song off each album. But so far, I have had issues with every one's pick for the worse song off of A Hard Day's Night. That album is near flawless, and I can't pick a worse song off it.

QuantumNoise (Justin Farrar), Friday, 7 July 2006 22:46 (nineteen years ago)

Blount's choice of "You Won't See Me" as best on Rubber Soul is interesting. I can almost see it. There really isn't a standout track on there, is there?

picking I'm Only Sleeping as a worst is mentalism to the fuck degree. (of course, i generally don't care for teh beatles, but that is a great song, but maybe it's ok if you think all the songs from revolver are 10s except that song is a 9 or something........)

timmy tannin (pompous), Saturday, 8 July 2006 03:14 (nineteen years ago)

I guess I think it's like a 7 or so. Is that still mentalism to the fuck degree?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Saturday, 8 July 2006 03:16 (nineteen years ago)

I'm So Tired is way better.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Saturday, 8 July 2006 03:17 (nineteen years ago)

no, just diffrent strokes

timmy tannin (pompous), Saturday, 8 July 2006 03:19 (nineteen years ago)

The Beatles, for me, sometimes just had this BRILLIANCE about them - I don't mean intellectual brilliance, but musical brilliance - and there's no song on Rubber Soul that does that for me.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Saturday, 8 July 2006 03:59 (nineteen years ago)

why do you morans think Revolution 9 is bad?

Savoy Truffle is the worst song on the White Album? Everyone hates on it, but I don't get the hate. It's in my list of top 5 Beatles tracks. You get points for putting "The Night Before" on your shiny list though.

DADDINO BE TRIPPIN'!!!

Look, even if the rumor that they're singing "baby, you're a rich fag jew" in the fade-out has no truth to it, I still have to contend with the laaaame too/zoo rhyme. "Come Together," like "Get Back," just plods, ugh.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 9 July 2006 13:16 (nineteen years ago)

I love this exercise, since now matter what songs we pick we compile something that would still be one of the great pop albums of all time ...

yeah wtf, that's like one of the best of the pre-65 songs, and one of their best ever. But I'm glad to see no-one is defending Mr. Moonlight. What a piece of crap! also, Bad Boy (if covers count). Yuck.

Steve Go1dberg (Steve Schneeberg), Sunday, 9 July 2006 17:59 (nineteen years ago)

I love this exercise, since now matter what songs we pick we compile something that would still be one of the great pop albums of all time ...

Even truer than you think. Any band that put out an album like THIS one would be assured of becoming a lost, beloved classic, frequently name-dropped by critics but bought by next to nobody until the namechecking critical mass peaks....

Baby, It's You
All I've Got To Do
When I Get Home
Rock n Roll Music
I Need You
Girl
Here, There And Everywhere
She's Leaving Home
All You Need Is Love
Piggies
All Together Now
Oh! Darling
Dig A Pony
Yes It Is
Lady Madonna

A Hard Day's Night is indeed the tough one to sort out, since it's so consistent in sound and energy - there's no listless tracks, no Ringo tracks, no "this sounds like we're still rehearsing" tracks (see: "I Need You"). Beatles For Sale is also tough, though - while it's not the total crapfest it's sometimes made out to be, it does have more duds per platter than any other Beatle album - "Honey Don't" and "Kansas City" are just plain terrible, the best evidence ever against claims that even the Beatles at their worst were better than most other bands. I almost selected "Eight Days A Week," which I've always hated, but at least it has a little more vim to it than the endless and irritating assault on Chuck Berry.

"Mister Moonlight" is CW bad but I love it and I know a lot of other people do too. What's to hate? Great opening yell by Lennon, fun organ goofyness (unique texture among their recordings), and those sweet, rich harmonies backing up Lennon's very nice rendition of the song. "Cause we love you... (WHAM! WHAM!) Mister Moonlight!" It's great!

Doctor Casino (Doctor Casino), Sunday, 9 July 2006 18:13 (nineteen years ago)

"All I've Got to Do" is a totally unfathomable pick there, Doctor! U R OTM, though, about "Mr. Moonlight" - one of my fave raves.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 9 July 2006 18:25 (nineteen years ago)

Hey, everything's relative: I love the Beatles and like "Oh Darling" just fine - only not as much as the rest of the album. (Including "Maxwell" and "Octopus".) forgetting Macca's Little Richard histrionics are fine but the song itself's unremarkable. And lacking any dazzling production or instrumental touches, the kind that made previous such songs worthwhile and saved them from making the list. ("Blue Jay Way", "Yellow Submarine", etc.)

Monty Von Byonga (Monty Von Byonga), Sunday, 9 July 2006 18:52 (nineteen years ago)

Fair enough. But I can't say I can fathom preferring Octopus's Garden to Oh Darling. And I think it has some great instrumental touches - particularly the jaunty lead guitar during the bridge and the perfectly placed buildup into the stop/start.

Steve Go1dberg (Steve Schneeberg), Sunday, 9 July 2006 19:03 (nineteen years ago)

Octopus's Garden has wonderful, playful backing vocals and bubbles!

Bubbles>Whiney Ass Titty Baby McCartney vocals on Oh Darling.

EZ Snappin (EZSnappin), Sunday, 9 July 2006 20:30 (nineteen years ago)

I think McCartney's vocals on Oh! Darling are great, but I also think it's a fairly aimless song and a big sufferer from his later tendency to not really write enough lyrics for the song. Maybe that's because it's a genre exercise or maybe it's just half-baked. As with "My Love" or "Hello Goodbye" I find myself wishing he wouldn't waste this solid performance and decent tune on such a generic, sketchy plot.

Doctor Casino (Doctor Casino), Sunday, 9 July 2006 20:42 (nineteen years ago)

My favorite part of this thread is how only one person has actually selected "Run For Your Life." Which is as it should be - it's a creepy, half-baked lyric that as a feminist I'm moved to oppose, but it's also a kick-ass rock performance (one of the quintessential George solos). They balance and the simply boring songs ("Girl," "Nowhere Man") come into focus.

Doctor Casino (Doctor Casino), Sunday, 9 July 2006 20:59 (nineteen years ago)

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 9 July 2006 21:36 (nineteen years ago)

My favorite part of this thread is how only one person has actually selected "Run For Your Life."

I didn't make a worst list, but if I had I would've included Run For Your Life. Although I think it's kind of neck and neck with The Word.

Steve Go1dberg (Steve Schneeberg), Sunday, 9 July 2006 21:41 (nineteen years ago)

Since I was willing to criticize others, here's my list:

P.S. I Love You
Roll Over Beethoven
I'll Be Back
Kansas City
Yesterday
Michelle
Love You To
Good Morning Good Morning
Your Mother Should Know
Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da
Maxwell's Silver Hammer

Listening to it, there are some decent tunes on that list. I just have a McCartney schmaltz limit.

EZ Snappin (EZSnappin), Sunday, 9 July 2006 21:59 (nineteen years ago)

Daddino's list looks a lot like mien, 'cept I would replace his last two with "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" and "The Long & Winding Road."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Sunday, 9 July 2006 22:05 (nineteen years ago)

"Got to Get You into My Life" is surprising, Geir."

later covered by popular r&b group with too much love for percussion.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 9 July 2006 22:09 (nineteen years ago)

Dude you gotta explain "There's a Place" worst on Please Please Me.

Part of me wanted to pick an unexpected track for at least one record. But I also think "There's a Place" is a well written tune (a precursor to "It Won't be Long"), but the band was quite prepared to record it in '63. Their voices sound a bit flat and fairly nervous to me; it doesn't have that tight, killer punch. Whereas, tunes like "A Taste of Honey", "Boys", and "Baby, It's You" aren't the best covers, but the band sounds more confident as they'd been doing those in their live sets for a long time.

QuantumNoise (Justin Farrar), Monday, 10 July 2006 00:54 (nineteen years ago)

Alfred, I'm talking about music just sounding brilliant - like how you would refer to a brilliant light. And, of course, that doesn't always come about through intellectual processes.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 10 July 2006 01:40 (nineteen years ago)

So you mean it sounds bright? As in, strong in high frequencies?

Steve Go1dberg (Steve Schneeberg), Monday, 10 July 2006 01:56 (nineteen years ago)

No, I mean music that is inspired by the muse!

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 10 July 2006 02:18 (nineteen years ago)

the "Mr. Moonlight" hatred on this thread sucks. you all suck.

holy crap i can't even remember how Another Girl *or* Tell Me What You See go, and I can't find my copy of Help. so I guess I suck. I pick whichever of those is worse.
Wait

She's Leaving Home
Hello Goodbye
Savoy Truffle
Octopus's Garden
For You Blue

damn, that is one hard exercise tho

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 10 July 2006 02:44 (nineteen years ago)

I love "Another Girl" mainly because I remember the scene where they sing it in the movie "Help!"...they're all just being total wackos but Paul has this girl and is strumming her like a guitar while lipsynching and accidently cops a feel, and he doesn't stop lipsynching but he looks as if he's going to crack up. Seriously, if you haven't seen the movie, you should.

musically (musically), Monday, 10 July 2006 02:54 (nineteen years ago)

I haven't seen the movie! and actually I do remember how it goes now ... it's kind of like maybe the song the Knickerbockers were ripping off on "Lies". i guess I'll pick "Tell Me What You See" then.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 10 July 2006 03:15 (nineteen years ago)

Hey, "Mr. Moonlight" would make my list of "Favourite Beatles Jams That Everyone Else Seems To Hate"! Assuming I were anal enough to compile such a list. (I am.)

Monty Von Byonga (Monty Von Byonga), Monday, 10 July 2006 03:17 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think "Lies" comes from that one, Stormy. Can't place it.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 10 July 2006 03:24 (nineteen years ago)

i dunno, i just hear "for I have GOT" -- guitar lick -- "Another girl!" and "Lies!" -- guitar lick -- "Lies!"

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 10 July 2006 03:30 (nineteen years ago)

I agree w/ Tim about the awesomeness of "Til There Was You" though .. the definitive version!

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 10 July 2006 03:31 (nineteen years ago)

Hell, I want to cover it. And yeah, "Til There Was You" is also great, I think I rambled about that on some other thread (possibly Geir-themed) about the melodic smoothness and perfection of Paul McCartney's voice...

"Got to Get You into My Life" is surprising, Geir.

There are no bad tracks on "Revolver" although on second thought I will probably swap it for "Yellow Submarine".

I think "Lies" was probably inspired by "Help!", "I'm a Loser", and a few other Lennon songs from 64-65.

"mr moonlight" is hilarious, no way is it hateable.

Alltime histrionic-babbling Lennon vocal
+ way-lugubrous roller-rink organ
+ perfunctory, lifeless cardboard-drum thuds ever
= pretty hilarious indeed!
