I think this is incredible. Return-to-form-ville.

What you reckon?

JoseMaria (JoseMaria), Friday, 7 July 2006 16:03 (nineteen years ago)

I hoped he would return to his downtempo-fusion sound

maarten maes (dice collective), Friday, 7 July 2006 16:24 (nineteen years ago)

I like this track, but I'd want to hear more of the album. His last few albums have generally had one good track but been otherwise forgettable.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Friday, 7 July 2006 16:27 (nineteen years ago)

Wow, more Amen breaks with tweaky 8bit synths.. How is he not sick of this kind of thing yet? After all these years??

Still, an enjoyable track.

CDDB (Dan Deluca), Friday, 7 July 2006 16:37 (nineteen years ago)

Pretty cool. Funny. Hypnotic-yet-maddening. Sounds like a Squarepusher ought.

But mostly I like watching the Warp logo-bot make and unmake itself. Makes me with I had certain mushrooms. Which, come to think of it, would go down nice with the musique, too...

fuckfuckingfuckedfucker (fuckfuckingfuckedfucker), Friday, 7 July 2006 16:41 (nineteen years ago)

I like!

Andie B (andie b), Friday, 7 July 2006 19:13 (nineteen years ago)

wow. sitting here at the cubicle of my internet based job listening to this song on headphone wiles staring at the warp logo. that's a trip in and of itself. is a good song, but i wont be able to listen to it more than two or three times. without any real emotion beying conveyed there's no attachment. plus finding new little bits and pieces i didnt know where there before is no longer that much fun once youve listened to enough of this kind of music.

jodawo (jodawo), Friday, 7 July 2006 22:10 (nineteen years ago)

Do You Know Squarepusher?

Then you'll know his singles sound fuck all like their accompanying ablums.

It's still good though.

Toad Roundgrin (noodle vague), Friday, 7 July 2006 22:15 (nineteen years ago)

Never has so much effort gone into something so unbelievably lazy.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 7 July 2006 22:23 (nineteen years ago)

Squarepusher is the shit. About friggin' time he put out a new record.

This song is awesome, of course.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Saturday, 8 July 2006 01:18 (nineteen years ago)

lots of effort = lazy..... does not compute. please explain

XD (eman), Saturday, 8 July 2006 01:38 (nineteen years ago)

i like!!

Cor-Ray (chaki), Saturday, 8 July 2006 01:47 (nineteen years ago)

it's good, but the days where i've expected to be blown away by new squarepusher material are long gone.

dog latin (dog latin), Saturday, 8 July 2006 10:15 (nineteen years ago)

I think he meant that a lot of technical effort has been expended on something which is creatively lazy, ie- hyper-edited silly drill and bass... this tune strikes me as incredibly duff... and for Squarepusher an utter cliche...

gekoppel (Gekoppel), Saturday, 8 July 2006 10:43 (nineteen years ago)

It may be a bit cliched, but I think it is, for want of a better term, absolutely lovely. In my world that's what we call perfect summer pop music.

emil.y (emil.y), Saturday, 8 July 2006 12:07 (nineteen years ago)

It's the most squarepushery thing I've ever heard. Pretty good.

chap who would dare to start Raaatpackin (chap), Saturday, 8 July 2006 12:40 (nineteen years ago)

Gekoppel - that's exactly what I meant.

Some of my first ILM posts involve me defending Go Plastic five years ago against similar criticisms but after all this time he's still ploughing exactly the same furrow. Considering he's clearly talented enough to do other things it annoys me that he continues to return to the same formula.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 8 July 2006 12:56 (nineteen years ago)

This rounds really good. Fuck "progression".

Toad Roundgrin (noodle vague), Saturday, 8 July 2006 13:06 (nineteen years ago)

no shit. why shouldnt he stick to his trademark sound if hes so good at it?

fez (fez), Saturday, 8 July 2006 13:11 (nineteen years ago)

Oh come on this is an utterly naff piece of tossed off old tosh! Tired breaks and dire 8bit manglings to no real avail. It just sounds tired...

gekoppel (Gekoppel), Saturday, 8 July 2006 13:16 (nineteen years ago)

Toad Roundgrin (noodle vague), Saturday, 8 July 2006 13:19 (nineteen years ago)

and so the long slow march of Warp electronica towards obsolescence continues unabated...

Toad Roundgrin (noodle vague), Saturday, 8 July 2006 13:35 (nineteen years ago)

I like it. The beat and tempo is fast but it's got that good half-time bounce.

Jordan (Jordan), Saturday, 8 July 2006 13:45 (nineteen years ago)

Nice. It sounds like an extended remix of 'Anstrom-Feck 4" from the Do You Know Squarepusher LP. On the subject of progression, I agree with Toad.

quinten (quinten), Saturday, 8 July 2006 14:00 (nineteen years ago)

considering the whole warp roster has been handed over to indie dreck, i kind of respect that squarepusher is the anachronism of the bunch.

XD (eman), Saturday, 8 July 2006 14:55 (nineteen years ago)

Tired guitars and dire vocal manglings to no real avail. It just sounds tired...

XD (eman), Saturday, 8 July 2006 14:57 (nineteen years ago)

After the UTTER BEAUTY of Tetra-sync (and a handful of other tracks) on Ultravisitor, this feels like an enormous leap backwards, to me. It just sounds like a half-arsed remix of Come On My Selector. Not good enough.

But yeah, noodle's right that Squarepusher lead tracks are rarely representative of their parent albums, so fingers crossed, there could be better to come. I think the fact that the promo pic on the warp site shows him actually playing his bass is pretty reassuring.

JimD (JimD), Sunday, 9 July 2006 00:42 (nineteen years ago)

(or is that a guitar? Well, whatever)

JimD (JimD), Sunday, 9 July 2006 00:44 (nineteen years ago)

It's a bass. I really, really didn't like Ultravisitor at the time.

Jordan (Jordan), Sunday, 9 July 2006 01:04 (nineteen years ago)

two months pass...
I've listened to about 5 tracks from the new album, and I have to say its some of his best stuff yet.

Some tracks are standard Jenkins stylee, while others, like 'bubble life' sound like Jenkins trying his hand a straight up pop--with lots of fusion bass. Suprisingly unabraisive.

Grell (Grell), Saturday, 30 September 2006 01:56 (eighteen years ago)

thx but no thx

HUNTA-V (vahid), Saturday, 30 September 2006 02:35 (eighteen years ago)

i listen to real jazz

HUNTA-V (vahid), Saturday, 30 September 2006 02:35 (eighteen years ago)

ha.

Grell (Grell), Saturday, 30 September 2006 04:28 (eighteen years ago)

one year passes...

This is easily his best since Go Plastic.

chap, Saturday, 19 April 2008 20:37 (seventeen years ago)

"Bubble Life" is the shiznit.

Mr. Snrub, Saturday, 19 April 2008 21:30 (seventeen years ago)

(´・ω・)つ(・(・ (am0n), Tuesday, 16 September 2008 23:29 (sixteen years ago)

It is very wtf lol. I like it tho. I will put my neck on the line and say that it will not be voted number one in ILM's end of year album poll

The Slash My Father Wrote (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 17 September 2008 09:00 (sixteen years ago)

why? Is it streaming somewhere?

baaderonixx, Tuesday, 23 September 2008 14:08 (sixteen years ago)

ok found it - wtf indeed

baaderonixx, Tuesday, 23 September 2008 15:28 (sixteen years ago)

I like it

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 23 September 2008 15:30 (sixteen years ago)

sounds like the pusher

cutty, Tuesday, 23 September 2008 15:43 (sixteen years ago)

Ha, this is great. It's got a lot of Yellow Magic Orchestra about it.

JimD, Wednesday, 1 October 2008 20:16 (sixteen years ago)

Yuk, not into the bits and pieces of this I've heard at all. A disappointment after the very enjoyable Hello Everything.

apparently dude has a ponytail now.

what U cry 4 (jim), Thursday, 11 December 2008 22:34 (sixteen years ago)

hasn't he always, at least metaphorically?

Tracy Michael Jordan Catalano (Jordan), Thursday, 11 December 2008 22:36 (sixteen years ago)

i like this new record, and really wish I could have seen him live w/the band

Dominique, Thursday, 11 December 2008 22:42 (sixteen years ago)

i've tried and failed to get into these last three ... i want to believe, but the weird bits aren't quite weird enough and the familiar bits are a bit too familiar ... AMAZING packaging on all three, though

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 12 December 2008 00:39 (sixteen years ago)

Agreed on the packaging. Must be nice knowing that you could always have a career as a kickass graphic designer if all else fails.

Z S, Friday, 12 December 2008 00:44 (sixteen years ago)

it sounds like Minutemen meets Devo meets Jaco Pastorius. I can fuck with it.

uәʇɹɐƃu!әʍ ˙ƃ ʎәu!Ⴁʍ (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 12 December 2008 02:42 (sixteen years ago)

that description makes it sound 100x better than it is.

what U cry 4 (jim), Friday, 12 December 2008 02:44 (sixteen years ago)

Compare "Delta V" with "Vietnam" by the Minutemen for reals.

uәʇɹɐƃu!әʍ ˙ƃ ʎәu!Ⴁʍ (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 12 December 2008 02:50 (sixteen years ago)

I think this album is fucking great, I've listened to this one a lot, and when people are told who it is they often double-take. It's a great lateral move for him.

Neotropical pygmy squirrel, Friday, 12 December 2008 03:03 (sixteen years ago)

HOOS wearing bitchmade sweaters and steendriving (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Friday, 12 December 2008 05:07 (sixteen years ago)

you know how people talk about 'being in a league of their own', well i think this is definately true in regards to squarepusher. This isnt to suggest any kind sense of sitting 'pon a marble mountain waiting for the canon to say hi or anything, but there is literally nobody that makes these kind of records imo. I cant really get on with some of the major scale widdles he rocks recently, but fuck if the quality of sound isnt glistening.
Also at the helm of a unique phenomenon where crowds yell 'FUUUUCKK OFF YA CUNT' appreciatively at his shows. Everytime i have seen him, there always been a resounding number of people just, like, swearing at him and having a mad good time.

siskin/skulls, Friday, 12 December 2008 21:12 (sixteen years ago)

sounds primus-esque (which he really is, isn't he?)
