myspace keeps me celibate

ever since i discovered the browse feature on myspace, my dating game has gone into terminal decline. i can set a mileage and age and relationship status range and trawl through profiles just like a dating site.

so what's the problem? well, it's just my rampant snobbery. i can't get motivated to send a message to someone whose musical tastes run to coldplay, james blunt and k.t. tunstall -ie. most fanciable women within 50 mile radius of me. if we'd met on a night out, gone back to hers, fucked, slept, got up the next morning and i'd discovered all of the above in her cd collection it wouldn't be a dealbreaker - it's just knowing it at the outset makes me hit the 'back' button on the browser and move on.

now i'm left pondering compromise in relationships - will i ever relate to someone whose appreciation of art is spoonfed by commercial radio?

the scene is better off without me. i shall stay in my hermit cave and wank myself into a coma.

Or do a Henry Miller and wank yourself into a comma.

Nothing born in the 70s or the 90s, those are the rules man.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 8 July 2006 00:12 (nineteen years ago)

on at least one occasion, i viewed someone's myspace after the fact, and totally regretted doing so. didn't regret the encounter though

meeting people is random and fun. prescreening lovers through myspace . . . doesn't sound like that much fun.

besides, myspace isn't a dating site. it's for bands. and . . . for people who sleep with people who play in bands. heh.

don't be jealous Tantrum. one day you'll find yourself a nice girl who'll agree to kiss you and maybe you'll even get to third base and everything! in the meantime, whenever you feel sexually frustrated and shouty just remember this: out with the anger, in with the love. we all know about your smutty little habit with the Matalan catalogue lingerie section - that's ok - you're among friends here!

I like how beeble has probably fucked some Coldplay fans, he's just cool with it because he didn't know. Maybe it's one of those things you should ask about, like wondering if she has herpes.

I was back at this girl's place once and was trying really hard to hit the back button but it turns out real world is not a web browser :(

Whazza diff between a light bulb and a pregnant chick?

You can unscrew a light bulb.

Lets face it, if you're into girls you're going to have to deal with Madona or Dave Mathews at some point.

Learn to like it or learn to like cock.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 10 July 2006 17:39 (nineteen years ago)

if you can bite down hard and feign the love for coldplay, james blunt & kt tunstall you've just supersized your potential demographic reach to a whole world of hott chicks! it's got to be the way forward for the serious playa - all the top cats know it's a volume game out there!

That would have been a better concept for that Adam Sandler movie (and would have been very "1996," which at least is better than "1988" with the universal remote). They could even have still called it "Click." Or, even better, "IRL."

morris pavilion (samjeff), Monday, 10 July 2006 18:34 (nineteen years ago)

I guess that I was asking to be flamed back, but here's a tip: if you're going to crack a lame masturbation gag, pick a publication that people will likely have heard of outside the U.K. Maxim could've worked, ditto FHM. We don't really do Matalan here in the Bland White North.

But in all seriousness, Beebs, IT'S ONLY MUSIC. If you're a) using MySpace to date and b) using expressions like "spoonfed by commercial radio" in all earnestness, then there's a great chance that I've got anywhere from 5 years to a decade on you. In other words, I'm old enough (and have dated enough) to remember a time when I turned down some potential naughtiness based on a young lady's musical taste, and I lived to regret it.

DO NOT WALK THIS PATH.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Monday, 10 July 2006 19:13 (nineteen years ago)

Wait, I just had a movie idea: a guy discovers that, when he deletes friends from his MySpace profile, they disappear IN REAL LIFE. So he has to rebuild them, by creating new profiles... he redesigns people to be more interesting, more exciting, more compatible with himself... he pulls images of hot chicks off other sites, builds profiles for them, and these dream girls show up at his door... he creates bands with the perfect mix of "influences," and magically books them in his garage, by posting blog entries... but then things start breaking down.......

"TOP 8" -- coming this fall, from 20th Century Fox.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Monday, 10 July 2006 19:24 (nineteen years ago)

On DVD.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 10 July 2006 19:29 (nineteen years ago)

Ha, I'd totally see that.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 10 July 2006 19:34 (nineteen years ago)

dude, don't waste your money. The execs will just hire rewriters to nix original ideas in exchange for cliches, turning the narritive into a "lesson learned" romantic comedy.

Rev. PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie 2), Monday, 10 July 2006 19:38 (nineteen years ago)

I will see THAT.

choinklate (nickalicious), Monday, 10 July 2006 19:50 (nineteen years ago)

in all earnestness

oh come now. i said i was going to hide in my cave and wank myself into a coma. of course we're down to lame crack-off gags here, that was apparent from the off. this is a matter of snobbery and apathy. snobbery is relative - i look down on some easy-target mainstream artistes, shit, LOADS of folks here could come round my house and savage my record collection and blinkered cultural reference points. bring me my soulmate. she can play David Gray on heavy rotation. if she's The One i swear i'll suffer anything.

your smug sense of superiority might actually help you get even more MOR tail

in Real Life *genuine* humility and a measure of self-effacement are attractive qualities for sure, but this isn't RL, this is ilxor - this is showbiz. we're typeface on a pixellated screen and dammit, i feel i have a have a duty to entertain.

beeble (beeble), Monday, 10 July 2006 20:26 (nineteen years ago)

ten months pass...

i think i am in (fake) love (ie i just fancy them a lot) with someone on myspace. although im not actually ON myspace. i just look at their profile. anyone else do this? im worried if i post their link now everyone reading this will be her friend and i wont. so im not going to.

titchyschneiderMk2, Thursday, 31 May 2007 14:21 (eighteen years ago)

i thought this post was in ILE. never mind.

anyway, as someone else says, most (attractive?) girls have appalling taste in music. its just an unfortunate vindictive trick god has pulled.

titchyschneiderMk2, Thursday, 31 May 2007 14:25 (eighteen years ago)

If you're game is tight you can get them to feign interest in whatever bullshit you're into. How many bored girlfriends have you seen at gigs? A bajillion.

jim, Thursday, 31 May 2007 14:32 (eighteen years ago)

your even. ;/

Oh and that myspace stalkery is quite crepey.

jim, Thursday, 31 May 2007 14:32 (eighteen years ago)

dom is crazy, nobody from the '70s???

deej, Thursday, 31 May 2007 14:32 (eighteen years ago)

some of us prefer the grace and class of a woman as old as 28

deej, Thursday, 31 May 2007 14:33 (eighteen years ago)

Dom is actually so otm there it hurts.

jim, Thursday, 31 May 2007 14:34 (eighteen years ago)

xp- well yeah, but feigning isnt the same as them actually knowing it already and being into it.

titchyschneiderMk2, Thursday, 31 May 2007 14:34 (eighteen years ago)

obv you have to de-music-nerd yourself sometimes in front of normal people though and find a bit of common ground.

titchyschneiderMk2, Thursday, 31 May 2007 14:36 (eighteen years ago)

dom has not discounted the 60's, do i smell a milf-chaser

bell_labs, Thursday, 31 May 2007 14:39 (eighteen years ago)

I always hoped to meet my wife at a gig. Never happened, I just had to resign myself to a partner with more mainstream taste. Fortunately, my wife is not particularly passionate about music so I control what we listen to for the most part. It only really becomes an issue on long car rides so I created a huge 400 song 80s set with stuff I can tolerate and nothing I hate. Plus I've been able to introduce her to the soft side of the underground - Lloyd Cole, Robyn Hitchcock, Go-Betweens, XTC, Innocence Mission, Chills, etc.

Mr. Odd, Thursday, 31 May 2007 14:42 (eighteen years ago)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v236/njsouthall/batgirl.jpg

We're currently arguing over custody of the Bjork album and the politics of small differences that means she likes Of Montreal more than I do, and I like Two Lone Swordsmen more than she does. We both adore Patrick Wolf and Guillemots. She dragged me to Regina Spektor live and it was amazing. She hates Embrace. We've seen Four Tet together even when we were separated temporarily. She likes the music with Talk Talk but can't get past the 80s connotations of Hollis' voice. We both hate James Blunt and like Sugababes. 6 years now. People are people and generalising does both them and you a disservice.

Scik Mouthy, Thursday, 31 May 2007 14:48 (eighteen years ago)

Dom also didn't discount the 00s, 10s, 20s, 30s, 40s or 50s, so, you know, octagenarian pussy ahoy, or something.

Scik Mouthy, Thursday, 31 May 2007 14:49 (eighteen years ago)

xpost are people just submitting opening paragraphs to their novels now?

DJ Mencap, Thursday, 31 May 2007 14:50 (eighteen years ago)

No, my novel starts with a para about beaming lasers into peoples eyes.

Scik Mouthy, Thursday, 31 May 2007 14:53 (eighteen years ago)

nick mentioned his novel to 65DOS in the first draft of that famous interview, but he had the decency to elide this mention from the final cut :-P

Just got offed, Thursday, 31 May 2007 14:57 (eighteen years ago)

i am honestly very, very sorry that you guys can't find internet hoes who are into the same shitty indie that you are. that must be terrible. hugs all around.
