I don't check out official websites too often, but I might start if there are a lot more doing stuff like this.
Whether it's a web exclusive, an OOP gem or the entire backcatalog (in BJM's case) tell me some more artists offering full albums for free download on their website.

Marmot 4-Tay: You are beautiful, and you are alone. (marmotwolof), Tuesday, 11 July 2006 03:56 (nineteen years ago)

I remember Luomo/Vladislav Delay use to have most of his catalog up on his website.

dolly mixture didn't put that stuff up themselves.

The Luomo/Vladislav stuff is only available on a huume page that is no longer linked to on the main site. The URL is this: http://www.huumeclothing.com/nohuume

There are some other more noisy bands that do this sort of thing too-- Music Fellowship used to just give it all away, as I remember.

Finally, today I heard a Butthole Surfers song from 1996? The "I don't mind the sun sometimes..." track. And it was coming from a radio! I had to stop walking and make sure I wasn't hallucinating.

Team Love's website offers their albums to download for free. I know Joe's website also offers complete downloads of her albums, too.

x-post
That's "Pepper"! It was their "She Don't Use Jelly" if you know what I mean. Radio/MTV played the hell out of it when it came out.

Marmot 4-Tay: You are beautiful, and you are alone. (marmotwolof), Tuesday, 11 July 2006 04:35 (nineteen years ago)

That song is really good, Marmot...it's what got me into the Butthole Surfers way back.

trees (treesessplode), Tuesday, 11 July 2006 04:45 (nineteen years ago)

The Liars did this for their second album... much to Mute's displeasure.

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Tuesday, 11 July 2006 04:45 (nineteen years ago)

I didn't say it wasn't! I like "She Don't Use Jelly"! :-D
I just meant it was their "surprise minor hit after years of 'underground squalor'", though MTV played "Who Was In My Room Last Night" a fair bit as well.

Marmot 4-Tay: You are beautiful, and you are alone. (marmotwolof), Tuesday, 11 July 2006 05:04 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, download those Butthole mp3s while you still can. I imagine that stuff will be pretty hard to get once they finally pull the plug. That Double Live is the best thing they ever did, as far as I'm concerned.

John W. Smoke (Uri Frendimein), Tuesday, 11 July 2006 05:06 (nineteen years ago)

Is that Liars album still online? I've only heard the first one.

Any specific reason why LBV didn't reissue Double Live Bootleg, Uri? Or Pioughd and Widowermaker, for that matter? You seem to know a lot about the Buttholes.

chris j (chris j), Tuesday, 11 July 2006 16:11 (nineteen years ago)

That Luomo stuff is all 404ed.

Harvey Danger made a big thing out of doing this, as have several smaller bands. Animal, a band from Acme Michigan, did this but not all of it is still up. Sounds like Decayes only goofier.

There was a noise label from Providence who had done this that I just saw on ILM, though I can't remember their names...

(AND I'VE BEEN POXY FULED TWICE TRYING TO POST THIS COMMENT...)

js (honestengine), Tuesday, 11 July 2006 17:15 (nineteen years ago)

What, are you broke?

Yeah, but that's because I drop around $500 on records every month or two. If someone is offering free music on their own website, I refuse to feel guilty about downloading it.
Lots of bands offer stray tracks here and there, but "full albums" seems to be worth drawing attention to, hence the thread.

Marmot 4-Tay: You are beautiful, and you are alone. (marmotwolof), Tuesday, 11 July 2006 19:15 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, Marmot, nobody should feel guilty downloading tracks for free if the artist makes them available in that form.

Saxophonist/composer Steve Coleman has several album's worth of free downloads on his site: http://www.m-base.com/

Any specific reason why LBV didn't reissue Double Live Bootleg, Uri? Or Pioughd and Widowermaker, for that matter? You seem to know a lot about the Buttholes.

They're still selling the vinyl versions of Double Live they found over 2 years ago! The fact that it's a super-limited supply of the slightly better fidelity vinyl version and they haven't sold them ALL yet, leads me to believe that there is a lack of interest. They don't sell that many records these days to new fans, I think. Of course, the vinyl version doesn't have as many songs as the cassette version. Before they discovered the vinyl, they were already giving away the Double Live mp3s for free on their site, possibly to generate interest or thank their fans who stuck with them throught the T&G controversy, etc.

But, Pioughd, specifically, is still owned by Capitol, I think. I got it new on CD when it was reissued a couple years ago, but if it's currently out of print, I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for them to reissue it again. As for Widowermaker, I own that on cassette, and I'm glad they invested their money in releasing Humpty Dumpty LSD instead. I doubt they would convert any new fans with Widowermaker and they probably realize that, too.
