Man, it's just a bad day. Dude wrote "Machine Gun" = for that alone he deserves praise.

Oh granted. ;-) But I'll put "Machine Gun" next to "Lucifer Sam" any day of the week, they both rule.

Just read this on the BBC site.
RIP. 1st Commodores album rules and Machine Gun in particular is an absolute classic track.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Tuesday, 11 July 2006 21:34 (nineteen years ago)

Shit, another good man gone. Nothing against Lionel Richie, but those instrumentals from the first coupla Commodores were unbeatable and unbeaten and Williams wrote 'em. I had occasion to shower "Machine Gun" with unnecessary praise in some random forgotten thread or another just 4-5 days ago. RIP

The Commodores weren't a bad band before Lionel and the ballads took over.

For a real trip, you should hear their earliest material from 1969, produced by Jerry "Swamp Dogg" Williams. These sides have been reissued over and over on different labels with different album titles, but suffice to say if you see a Commodores CD with "Rise Up," "Sing A Simple Song," "Keep On Dancing," etc., buy it. It's surprisingly primal houseparty funk like you'd expect from any self-contained black band playing the southern frat-party circuit in the late sixties.
