Slayer have set "Christ Illusion" as the title of their new album, due on August 8, 2006 via American Recordings/Warner Bros. Records.

"Christ Illusion" is Slayer's first new studio album since 2001, and the first recorded by the band's original line-up — Kerry King (guitars); Tom Araya (bass, vocals); Jeff Hanneman (guitars); Dave Lombardo (drums) — since 1990's "Seasons In The Abyss". "Christ Illusion" was produced by Josh Abraham and executive produced by Rick Rubin.

Don't see a thread yet. I'm looking forward to this.

I think they should change their name to The Christ-Punchers.

Cult's good.

Bill Magill (Bill Magill), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 14:26 (nineteen years ago)

The whole goddamn album is good. "Jihad" especially. Lyrically, it reminds me of Laibach's "God Is God." My super-watermarked copy can't be imported into my iPod, which pisses me off, but it's a really, really good album.

there's a band called the Christ Punchers in Mpls.

I'm excited for this.

A couple of weeks after 9/11 (the release date of "God Hates Us All," if you recall) I asked Kerry King if they had any regrets about the title, in light of events, and King laughed and quickly said "No. I mean, turn on the news, man. God does hate us all!"

This is after the poster campaign with the bloody "God Hates Us All" scrawled on it, up all around New York at the time.

Gotta love Slayer (and I'm going to hell for it).

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 15:08 (nineteen years ago)

Some more tidbits:
"Christ Illusion" deals with familiar Slayer themes — god, religion, hate, and war. Says Araya, "No one is going to be disappointed, it's going to blow everybody away. It's fast, heavy, and maybe faster than anything we've done before."

"It's a good mix of fast, brutal music and slower moodier stuff, it's pretty intense," added King. "It sounds like a damn Slayer record."

A core player in Slayer's history has also rejoined the team for the "Christ Illusion" project. Larry Carroll, who did the cover artwork for "Reign in Blood", "South of Heaven", and "Seasons In the Abyss", has painted an original piece for the "Christ Illusion" cover. Working only from the song titles and early lyrics, Carroll has produced a classic Slayer masterpiece — a portrait of the Christ whose forearms have been chopped off — standing in an ocean of blood surrounded by floating, decapitated heads. Carroll created the painting on a 4-by-4-foot slab of wood using a combination of mediums. King already has placed dibs on ownership of the original wooden canvas.

What are you guys talking about, this album is great. Really liking "Supremist" and "Jihad" the most out of the bunch. Nice to have the speed back to the band's sound.

a. begrand (a begrand), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 08:39 (nineteen years ago)

Might sound like a strange criticism of Slayer, but... where are the hooks? Supremist is the only song that stood out to me at all. I'll keep listening, though. Doesn't seem nearly as angry and balls-out as God Hates Us All did.

josh in sf (stfu kthx), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 19:21 (nineteen years ago)

The closest there are to real hooks is on "Jihad", "Supermist", "Cult", and "Flesh Storm", but yeah, there's nothing on the same kind of level of catchiness as "Bloodline". I still think the album's very strong.

a. begrand (a begrand), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 20:30 (nineteen years ago)

Slayer on The Henry Rollins Show tonight.

They played "Cult". Dave and Jeff were ruling it. There's another song on IFC.com, but I haven't watched it yet.

They weren't that bad on Rollins, but the lyrics sounded a bit preachy. I hate that preachy shit in my Rock & Roll.

Marmot 4-Tay: I'll sip from his well without hesitation. (marmotwolof), Sunday, 30 July 2006 06:26 (nineteen years ago)

haven't Slayer always been a little preachy though? unless it has gotten way over the top. I haven't heard the new one. eh, don't really care if Tom sings a bunch of stupid crap as long as King and Hanneman continue to play Ornette-style harmolodics at 156 rpm on every tune -- the main reason that Slayer rules. But yeah, Lombardo back is the real key -- is his presence felt? those that have heard the alb --- does it sound like Dave is IMPROVING the recent Slayer??

Stormy Davis (diamond), Sunday, 30 July 2006 06:32 (nineteen years ago)

Here's the lyrics to "Cult" Stormy, judge for yourself.

Opression is the holy law,
In God I distrust,
Italic monuments will fall,
Like ashes to dust,
It's war and creed the master plan,
The battle's where it all began,
It's propaganda shouts despair,
And sends this virus everywhere,
Religion is hate,
Religion is fear,
Religion is war.
Religion is rape,
Religion's obscene,
Religion's a whore.
The pestilence of Jesus Christ,
There never was a sacrifice,
No man who hung the crucifix,
Beware the call for purity,
Infections their facility,
I've made my choice,
666!
Carussa Green's a paedophile,
No praying for the priest,
Confession finds a lonely child,
Now preys on the weak,
You think your soul can still be saved,
I think you're fucking miles away
Scream out loud, heres where you begin,
Forgive me Father for I have sinned!
Religion is hate,
Religion is fear,
Religion is war.
Religion is rape,
Religion's obscene,
Religion's a whore.
The target's fucking Jesus Christ,
The one I'd love to sacrifice,
I'd nail him to the crucifix,
Beware the call for purity,
Infections their facility,
I've made my choice,
666!
Jesus is pain,
Jesus is gore,
Jesus is the blood that's spilled in war,
He's everything,
He's all things dead,
He's pulling down the trigger pointed at your head!
The fear your *something* to the front,
Revelation, Revolution, I see through your cracked illusion!
The war on terror just drags along,
My holy god it's growing strong,
It's propaganda shouts despair,
And sends this virus everywhere,
Religion is hate,
Religion is fear,
Religion is war.
Religion is rape,
Religion's obscene,
Religion's a whore.
There is no fucking Jesus Christ,
There never was a sacrifice,
No man upon the crucifix,
Beware the call for purity,
Infections their facility,
I've made my choice,
666!

Marmot 4-Tay: I'll sip from his well without hesitation. (marmotwolof), Sunday, 30 July 2006 06:36 (nineteen years ago)

You go to the church, you kiss the cross
You will be saved at any cost
You have your own reality
Christianity
You spend your life just kissing ass
A trait that's grown as time has passed
You think the world will end today
You praise the Lord, it's all you say

Jesus saves, listen to you pray
You think you'll see the pearly gates
When death takes you away

For all respect you cannot lust
In an invisible man you place your trust
Indirect dependency
Eternal attempt at amnesty
He will decide who lives and dies
Depopulate Satanas rise
You will be an accessory
Irreverence and blasphemy

Jesus saves, no need to pray
The gates of pearl have turned to gold
It seems you've lost your way

Stormy Davis (diamond), Sunday, 30 July 2006 06:41 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, pretty much.

Marmot 4-Tay: I'll sip from his well without hesitation. (marmotwolof), Sunday, 30 July 2006 06:52 (nineteen years ago)

Still, this album tops most of their post-1990 stuff. "Jihad" is a great tune. Love the intro. Lombardo exudes a certain sub-surface funk rhythm and he brings it out in the rest of the band. King's lyrics are lame, but who listens to any of the words, aside from screaming along to the occasional "Hail Sataaaaaaan!" as King starts dangling from his whammy bar?

Mr Deeds (Mr Deeds), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 01:43 (nineteen years ago)

Slayer is fun.

Simon H. (Simon H.), Monday, 21 August 2006 14:41 (nineteen years ago)

three years pass...

I never did much like this album - to me, Slayer didn't seem to commit to which direction it wanted to move. It had some "retroactive" thrash (more retro to 1994 than 1986), but then still had some of the "nu-metal"ist trappings from God Hates Us All. While this wouldn't be a problem to some, I'm in the minority that thought GHUA was an awful abortion of an album - even after I got used to the fact that Slayer was playing that style, I couldn't help notice the songwriting just wasn't there anymore, and that the music was forgettable, other than "God Send Death" and "New Faith".

I really liked what they did on World Painted Blood, which is restoring some of their crossover 'hardcore' tendencies (thinking more of tracks 6-8 of Reign in Blood, which are the more 'restrained' songs on that album), and playing simple yet effective thrash. I think this improved greatly on Christ Illusion, which was ok but not great.
