Songs *about* Laika

Was listening to the Divine Comedy's last this morning, and noticed that Hannon references Laika not only in "Laika's Theme", but in the titular "Absent Friends". Coincidentally, had an Aluminum Group album in today's listening pile, and remembered that "Oxygen" references Laika, too. ("There's a spacecraft full of dog orbiting both of us / and the oxygen has left its ship long ago").

Any other songs? Enough to make a compilation? Assuming Laika, the band, has to have one song in honor of the dog.

would suggest there were a few space dogs.

a quick google turns up 'Space Dog' by tori amos but, to be honest, that could be about anything judging by the lyrics.

I checked AllMusic and found a handful of tracks w/ Laika in the title.

Max Richter - Laika's Journey (Yahoo! ILM turned me on to Max's _The Blue Notebooks_, which I love, so now I have another reason to hunt down his _Memoryhouse_ cd.)

Cardigans, Damon & Naomi, Ghost 7, Moxy Fruvous, Mecano, Ira Stein, Those Norweigans, Walnut Grove Band all have songs titled "Laika".

El Nino has a track called "Dog, Laika" and Laika & the Cosmonauts have "C'mon, Do the Laika".

So it's songs like the first suggestion (thanks!) that don't reference Laika by name that will fill out a mix disc.

And now I've got cover art. Thanks, Mark.

Ah, Arcade Fire! I knew there was another song I had that referenced Laika. Excellent!

Moxy Fruvous?

http://www.fruvous.com/barglyr.html#laika

"When I was 3, my mother said to me
Eat up your greens and say your grace
While on TV they put a dog in space
And left her there... you shoulda seen her face"

that's disturbing. the whole thing is tbh.

Assuming Laika, the band, has to have one song in honor of the dog.

yes: there was a little song at the end of their first album about her. very touching, IIRC.

one of my iPods is called laika. why? i can't remember. other than the fact that all three of my iPods have had russian names.

there's a huge list of songs here on wikipedia ... i'm sure there's another that i really like, but i can't for the life of me recall what it is. fuck, that's going to bug me now.

Looper has "Dave the Moon Man", which might come in handy if I need to cheat to a 'space' theme to fill out a disc.

Awesome. Just searched the local library database and put Cracker on hold. No Damon & Naomi, though - odd for a Seattle library not to have all the SubPop discs.

Howbout that fictional "Dogs In Space" band and their song of the same namee: Was that on topic? (Never heard/seen it myself.)

Er, can't remember one, but at the end of the Sounds of the Satellites CD there's a "hidden track" with about a minute's worth of an old news report about the dog.

yes, we've done that one :)

based, so my mate david says, on him. he is actually sadly mistaken, but we let him think it.

L. Kage's album Brazilliant has a heart-rending song called "Space Dog" which is about Laika ... fantastic tune. Don't have it with me but if you need an mp3 just e-mail.

-"Moxy Fruvous?"

Aye, Canadian band circa 1990ish-1999 (dates could be wrong?) they do sort of folky canadian/vocal harmonies. Check them out, the album to get is "Bargainville" - usually find it on eBay for $10-15 (£7-10).

And yes, a song called Laika...
