as for the song itself, yeah, i don't find it very good. i love the intro but that's about it (i even feel like b is a bit out of tune near the end, when she screams like hell. which is pretty cool in a way !).

Part of what I like is the way that bass line just walks up and down the progression but really what's awesome is the way it slams into that chord in the chorus with the added ninth in the vocal line.

Very OTM. There was a precedent of sorts with the execrable Baby Boy video, in which Beyonce's dance routine seemed designed to resemble an areobics video watched on fast forward. The Deja Vu video ups the ridiculous pace ante even further.
It reminds me of some shitty Geri Halliwell promo video I had the misfortune to see, in which Geri could be seen in the background sprinting through the desert with a look of perhaps chemically-altered determination, while in the foreground some record company stooge was saying words to the effect of 'no, you shouldn't worry about her diet, many celebrities who are just too busy for meals replace them with "vitamin shots", they're perfectly safe'.

yeah, the image Beyonce puts forth in a lot of her videos has always kind of confounded and repulsed me, staring all wide-eyed at the camera all sweaty with weird arm movements, I guess to convey the same over-the-top emotion as all those terrible "your sexiness is so appealing" lyrics.

i think the vid does work well and all - jay as the static pivot and everything else sorta like a scatterbrained fever dream, crazy aneurysm editing and senseless location switches and mental hott costume changes even in the same locations and yeah all kinds of oneirofucking. no?

I keep listening to it... and keep thinking it's not a great track. I've tried to listen carefully to that pre-hook part but I still don't really see what's so special harmonically. the main problem is there is no good hook or melody, I guess.

it's called CROSS PROMOTION, kids.

the pre-bridge is pretty harmonically simple innit? just two chords, a tritone sub for the five and then the tonic? for me, it's the way the bass and vocal lines spell it out that make it sound so freaky.

personally i would love this if the chorus didn't kind of put me off. i don't know if i really wanted Beyonce to start jamming with what sounds like Tower of Power or something. but it's not bad.

yeah, when i was only a hip hop head, and listened ONLY to rap, i loved stuff like ghost and raekwon on jodeci tracks, or akinyele, pretty boy floyd etc on i wanna go down, etc etc, and those tracks are still great, but enough already. half the time, the verses have nothing to do with the song either. and as an
R&B fan, im sick of it. sorry to sound so curmudgeonly, but most of the time, its just the most unimaginative way of pairing the genres.

xxpost - re: jay-z/rap guest spots on R&B records, it was great on the VMAs when slim thug went on stage with beyonce to collect the award for check on it and she looked at him like she barely knew who he was or just plain didnt want him there. it was even better when he said 'thanks to whoever asked me to get on this record'. you could just tell beyonce wouldnt have picked any other rapper to be on there.
