There is some discussion here:
Electro-house bobbins 2006

and perhaps some other places, but I think the guy needs his own thread, since he is not electro-house bobbins by any means. Pom Pom 26 is, per usual, noisy and drugged. Quite astounding. The B-Side is a bit less 'dark' than the A with some high watery flourishes here and there, but I like them both. So: what's good what's not?
Anyone know if this guy is seriously into noise music? Sounds like it.

Pom Pom 19 is incredible - super creeped-out circus music. I think they're pretty much all great, and as much as i love the anonymity of it all, i wanna know more...
Is it one person, or like a collective type thing? Am i right in thinking it's from Berlin?

I guess THAT was only a matter of time.

3, 5, 8, 24 are the best Pom Poms imo, and 14 has the sleaziest Windowlicker re-edit ever.

all pom pom from this year = yay

Roughage Crew (Enrique), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 13:21 (eighteen years ago)

He is an anonymous one-guy operation from Kreuzberg-- never released anything on an 'official label.'

I, personally, am a fan of 10, 16, 19, and 22-26. 10 and 24 get a lot of play in particular.

Jergins, try 24 if you can get it. Even better than 23.

(Also, Miki, what are we going to do without you as electronic director? God, back into the primordial ooze of breakbeat and drum & bass.)

trees (treesessplode), Saturday, 22 July 2006 17:52 (eighteen years ago)

thx trees

jergins (jergins), Saturday, 22 July 2006 17:54 (eighteen years ago)

Trees,
I would've stayed on as director, but there was some miscommunication between me and AC, so I ended up loosing my job. Besides, I never did much anyway.

Hi Leo.

Miki (Miki), Sunday, 23 July 2006 06:44 (eighteen years ago)

the earlier crazy distorted 4/4 stuff like on 3 and 5 is all completely essential to me

the trip-hoppy direction they went off in afterwards is less so

the pom pom stuff from this year and last is great, though, on 24 especially they really nail the new aesthetic

pom pom 18 b2 is really the watershed to me for their current sound

james brooks (j_brooks), Monday, 24 July 2006 13:52 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, 18 and 19 are the turning point it seems. I guess I do like 16, though.

(Miki, it's cool. I just hate the Fauss's taste, yknow?)

trees (treesessplode), Monday, 24 July 2006 14:03 (eighteen years ago)

Where can I find more about this? Googling isn't turning anything up.

like murderinging (modestmickey), Monday, 24 July 2006 14:08 (eighteen years ago)

And is this on vinyl only? No CD release yet?

like murderinging (modestmickey), Monday, 24 July 2006 14:09 (eighteen years ago)

not so much yet as never I'd imagine.

ordinarily I'd suggest downloading them and making your own CD but... :/ (really sorry)

fandango (fandango), Monday, 24 July 2006 14:13 (eighteen years ago)

hey murdering, googling 'pom pom' is absurd. try putting a number (b/w 1 & 26) after it-- sometimes this can get more results.

also, if you want, i can send you some tracks.

trees (treesessplode), Monday, 24 July 2006 14:49 (eighteen years ago)

pom pom 10 otm. and even tho I feel guilty for saying it, this is like some lost ground between Can and Cluster

Dominique (dleone), Monday, 24 July 2006 20:03 (eighteen years ago)

I was listening to 24 today and it reminded me of early Orbital. Then suddenly, the clouds in the sky parted, the trees swayed in time with the beat, and a guy with blonde dreads tried to sell me some bad MDMA.

I'd like to meet the disgruntled staffer(s) who wrote those blurbs for FE.

Miki (Miki), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 10:25 (eighteen years ago)

Me too, Miki.

I am glad the drugginess of it came through. Also, drug dealers with blond dreads must be stopped.

he ain't sellin any longer! (i am DJing an afterparty tonight at 100see's old apartment, which has been renamed 'white magic.' i need a mixer.)

also, should have qualified that statement with: drug dealers who sell bad drugs that happen to have blonde dreads must be stopped. this is a significant population as well. (plus j p34k is a sweetheart)

Unless there's some kind of confusion in translation (which is very possible), cisco records keeps saying that justus kohncke is behing pom pom...
wtf?

Geoffrey Priory (big peach), Friday, 8 September 2006 00:16 (eighteen years ago)

seems like a reach, at least as far as the difference in sound between pom pom and kohncke, though it would make me smile

Dominique (dleone), Friday, 8 September 2006 00:43 (eighteen years ago)

ps, the pom pom 27 samples = awesome rad

Dominique (dleone), Friday, 8 September 2006 00:44 (eighteen years ago)

i don't know about that dominique. i've only heard a few pom pom records but they don't seem beyond kohncke, just different enough that they warrant different pseudonym.

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Friday, 8 September 2006 01:28 (eighteen years ago)

well, if it's kohncke, he's apparently using one set of drum sounds for pom pom and one for jk -- so i guess I have to hand it to him for thoroughness. also, hypothetical note to jk: forget your real name, do pom pom full time

Dominique (dleone), Friday, 8 September 2006 02:56 (eighteen years ago)

let's start a rumor that it's jk to force the real pp out of hiding!

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Friday, 8 September 2006 03:07 (eighteen years ago)

I like Pom Pom's sound better than Kohncke's...or shall I say I like that pseudonym better? Anyway, I think PP stuff is a bit more unexpectedly wild.

trees (treesessplode), Friday, 8 September 2006 04:07 (eighteen years ago)

No way it's Justus.

jergins (jergins), Friday, 8 September 2006 06:25 (eighteen years ago)

Pom Pom is probably a TokTok side project. both are pretty similar in their love of brutalism and outlandish samples, also TokTok were charting in 2001 and needed an outlet for their more 'underground' stuff. maybe some techie can tell if theyre using the same gear?

Python... No Bite :B (flezaffe), Friday, 8 September 2006 11:59 (eighteen years ago)

how's # 30?

jergïns, Thursday, 12 July 2007 02:50 (seventeen years ago)

First off, I've been thinking about why I like Pom Pom's sound so much, and while I think Dominique is OTM in her comments, I also think that there's a primitive element to a lot of Pom Pom releases that is very attractive. The sounds aren't new sounds, and the arrangements aren't particularly breathtaking most of the time, but there's a rawness and simplicity in Pom Pom records that is...dare I say: old school? Original, old-seeming.

Info:
One may barely believe it... The bestgehütete secret of the Technogeschichte comes for the first time on CD. Nevertheless, except the cash code nothing changes and this is good in such a way as Klaus Wowereit would say. The Pom Pom sound is timeless modern and totally> out there <, it is, so to speak, the Working Class version of BASIC channel, passionate Techno with punk manner. Do advise sometimes how the Artwork looks ...? Is right: Black!

I thought the massive Prince of Denmark album from 2016 had Pom Pom vibes

Dominique, Monday, 5 March 2018 19:07 (seven years ago)

oh I will check this out. I get the feeling that Pom Pom's stuff is great but prob not like incredibly unique or groundbreaking and there's prob tons more more-common acts that sound like this but I just don't know them bcz most of my knowledge of 00's electronic music is outside the realm of German techno

should I just listen to a bunch of Kompact Total comps or???

the masseduction of lauryn hill (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 5 March 2018 19:42 (seven years ago)

yes

the late great, Monday, 5 March 2018 19:49 (seven years ago)

ultimately i don't fuck with these because they are a bit dry for my taste but respect for managing 30-odd releases over 17 (?) years

the late great, Monday, 5 March 2018 19:51 (seven years ago)

Pom Pom are darker, and with a hint of industrial texture than I've never heard on anything from Kompakt. Beyond the record I mentioned above, you might fare better checking out stuff like Pan Sonic, Ø, Felix Kubin, and all the old techno dudes like Robert Hood, Basic Channel, Porter Ricks. Pom Pom is (seemingly?) a lot more lo-fi and homemade sounding than that, but seems to come from the same broken-mechanics-of-grey-urban life place.

Dominique, Monday, 5 March 2018 20:42 (seven years ago)

yeah maybe the kompakt extra / speicher releases would be closer to pom pom

the late great, Monday, 5 March 2018 20:44 (seven years ago)

guess kompakt has a pop element that is missing from pom pom

the late great, Monday, 5 March 2018 20:44 (seven years ago)

oh yeah Basic Channel is close! That's the road I need to go down
