RHINO DISINTERS GOTH CLASSICS

A Life Less Lived: The Gothic Box Features 53 Influential Tracks On Three CDs And 12 Music Videos on DVD
Boxed Set Is Available September 19 from Rhino

With 53 songs and 12 videos originally released between 1978 and 1998, this boxed set provides a uniquely comprehensive listen into the largest underground scene in the world. Or as the collection's producer, Liz Goodman, explains in the extensive liner notes, the box showcases "the essential hit bands from a scene that arguably never had hits."

The deluxe packaging features a track-by-track listing penned by Dave Thompson, author of the Goth history The Dark Reign Of Gothic Rock, as well as humorous how-to essays about dancing and clubbing Goth. The liner notes also contain an enlightening exploration of the word Goth by members of Bauhaus, The Damned, Love And Rockets, The Mission (U.K.) and Ogre of Skinny Puppy, who says, "I've always found the term to be much more of a 'label' to categorize, instead of remaining true to its origin or more romantic, historical relevance. Seemingly lost in the mists of time, the forever shape-shifting meanings of certain words give little to the authenticity or spirit."

disc 3 is a winner!

celebrity mole: hawaii (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 15:44 (nineteen years ago)

And it ISN'T on Cleopatra?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 15:46 (nineteen years ago)

I won't be needing this, but it does seem pretty good and representative, as you'd expect from Rhino. There are some awful filler-laden Goth comps out there.

Soukesian (Soukesian), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 15:47 (nineteen years ago)

11. "Kiss" - London After Midnight

Speaking of filler-laden...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 15:48 (nineteen years ago)

I won't be needing this

ooh, get her

celebrity mole: hawaii (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 15:48 (nineteen years ago)

Out of 53 songs I don't own 8 already. I can't say I'm surprised.

BTW:

8. "Melody Lee" - The Damned

While a great song this is a RIDICULOUS choice when the obvious candidate is 1982's "The Dog," which is a slow gloomy epic about Claudia from Interview with the Vampire. How much more freakin' goth can you GET?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 15:52 (nineteen years ago)

(And if they wanted something from Machine Gun Etiquette, then "Plan 9 Channel 7," about Vampira and James Dean, of course.

"Step into the niiiiiiiiiiiiiight!")

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 15:54 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, "melody lee" is an odd choice for a goth comp.

celebrity mole: hawaii (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 15:56 (nineteen years ago)

This looks great but they could've picked something better by this band:

"I Go Crazy" - Flesh For Lulu

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 16:35 (nineteen years ago)

if you absolutely have to put a flesh for lulu track on there at least you could go w/"subterraneans," jeez. also jamc?!? afi?!? pretty good lookin but sticks a little too closely to the obvious choices when shit, you've got uk decay and bone orchard and ritual and seventy billion others that were made for this sorta thing.

FAN DEATH (teenagequiet), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 16:37 (nineteen years ago)

Way to go, guys. Nitpicking fans of goth bands on goth comp thread shocker. (I love you guys, but seriously...)

Maybe there's just been so many BAAAAD BAAAAD goth compilations that anything that's released that isn't bad seems like gold, but as a goth primer, this is the best job I've seen done with it.. even if it means the likes of London After Midnight go on it. Then again, you kinda need that amateur aspect of it to fill that angle. (Please tell me the liner notes tell the story of the L.A.M. guy being chased into the second floor of Music Plus, please please please!)

And oh the shocker.. a decent goth comp that's NOT on Cleopatra. Who would have fucking thought?

*puts back of hand on my forehead in a forlorn fashion*

San Diva Gyna (and a Masala DOsaNUT on the side) (donut), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 16:39 (nineteen years ago)

"And it ISN'T on Cleopatra?"

that's the biggest irony...

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 16:40 (nineteen years ago)

This looks great but they could've picked something better by this band:
"I Go Crazy" - Flesh For Lulu

nonsense! total nonsense!

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 16:41 (nineteen years ago)

you kinda need that amateur aspect of it to fill that angle

That line of logic means that an eighties metal band comp should include RYL. (Which, I admit, it should.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 16:42 (nineteen years ago)

I always thought the goth comps on Cleopatra were fairly terrible?

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 16:43 (nineteen years ago)

My point.

San Diva Gyna (and a Masala DOsaNUT on the side) (donut), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 16:44 (nineteen years ago)

They were fun to see what bands on their current roster they were pushing at the time. (Compare the original The Whip with the rerelease...)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 16:44 (nineteen years ago)

they didn't ask me to pose for the artwork? A TRAVESTY!

latebloomer (latebloomer), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 16:44 (nineteen years ago)

It's really sad that the one label where goth is their bread and butter had no influence on the only comprehensive, decent goth compilation that's come out to date.

San Diva Gyna (and a Masala DOsaNUT on the side) (donut), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 16:45 (nineteen years ago)

actually the gothic rock comps (which were not even really cleopatra, just licensed from jungle) were all pretty good, as long as they stuck to stuff from the 80's

FAN DEATH (teenagequiet), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 16:46 (nineteen years ago)

As for London After Midnight, I assume someone slept with the right person, and I'll leave it at that.

The rest of the track listing is pretty solid, even if not the best choices for certain bands. As a whole, I can see this work.

San Diva Gyna (and a Masala DOsaNUT on the side) (donut), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 16:46 (nineteen years ago)

Wouldn't royalties and label contracts and stuff be tied into Cleopatra's ability to put out a compilation? I mean I always assumed their "definitive goth compilations" were full of their latest signings just because they were pushing their bands in the hackiest way possible, but maybe they could only really afford to put out comps with their own bands on them.

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 16:47 (nineteen years ago)

(Please tell me the liner notes tell the story of the L.A.M. guy being chased into the second floor of Music Plus, please please please!)

My subtle hint to a certain ilxor to cough up a K-classic U+K story is being ignored, apparently.

San Diva Gyna (and a Masala DOsaNUT on the side) (donut), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 16:49 (nineteen years ago)

It's really sad that the one label where goth is their bread and butter had no influence on the only comprehensive, decent goth compilation that's come out to date.

Actually I think it kinda did with the inclusion of the Chameleons there.

Anyway, comparison point -- Cleopatra's own Goth Box from some years back (ignore the cut/pasted 'listen' bits from Amazon):

That would be part of it. I need to get friend Christofu to tell the story of Penal Colony sometime...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 16:51 (nineteen years ago)

lauren, there is no way I'm wrong on this. May God take my Baby Hurricane 12-inch if I lie.

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 16:51 (nineteen years ago)

That Cleo goth box is probably great for people already in the scene... not necessarily a good "Goth For Dummies" set, like the above.

San Diva Gyna (and a Masala DOsaNUT on the side) (donut), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 16:53 (nineteen years ago)

ANYWAY, the London After Midnight story.

Back in 1992, I was seeing Peter Murphy with Machines of Loving Grace opening (and doesn't THAT take you back) at the Greek Theater. While waiting for the show to start, friend Steve and I ended up chatting with the friendly fellers sitting behind us who, unlike us, were clearly 'in the scene' in terms of dressing the part, which they did well. (Plenty of black clothes, makeup, leather, etc.) But like I said, very friendly and just as cynical as us, so we passed the time chatting.

Turns out these two were sick of the posturing idiocy of the lead dude in London After Midnight, who had already made a name for themselves in LA goth circles as being, well, lame. Which they were (and I suppose still are, I haven't paid attention, I don't WANT to), especially the lead guy, who apparently went around trying to convince people he really really REALLY was a vampire. You know, never out in the sunlight, pass the blood, the whole bit.

So these two guys we were talking to didn't think much of all this, and therefore were utterly delighted to discover that in fact dude's regular job on those sunny LA weekdays was to work at a Music Plus or a Wherehouse somewhere in the Valley. Armed with this knowledge, they found the store and went in one day, asking if so-and-so (John, I think) was around. They were pointed in his direction as he stacked up the latest copies of Nevermind or whatever and approached him.

Dude saw them and apparently freaked and tried to escape to protect his image. But they cornered him, saying something along the lines of, "Oh my god, it's a vampire! Quick! Exorcise him!" Then they held out crucifixes and sprayed him with holy water.

Much hilarity was had upon hearing this story, as you might guess.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 17:00 (nineteen years ago)

(This ultimately fed into the portrayal of a figure called Dorian that was part of the Donut-led-but-we-all-helped never-quite-finished goth radio drama comedy for KUCI Can't Stop the Goths, featuring the misadventures of Fountain Valley-based band Maybelline Messiah. Dorian was the ultragoth of the band, someone so into it they couldn't ever emerge into the sunlight, and therefore was reduced to being a home telemarketer for Time-Life Books during the day. Regrettably, every time he tried to sell books about medieval history he would start ranting in a strained voice about 'the PLEASURES of the TORTURE CHAMBER!' and would wonder why his customers hung up on him.

We did actually RECORD a Maybelline Messiah song, I should note, with lyrics from Donut. Chorus:

"And the dead will rise
And the blood will call
A million faces from the screaming wall
Brings disease, doom, despair
AND DEATH.")

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 17:04 (nineteen years ago)

The paren totally makes the chorus.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 17:20 (nineteen years ago)

it feels off to me because it largely sidesteps drum machines

putting london after midnight on there is cute and stuff but are you really going to tell me that that nick cave/kylie minogue duet is more goth than "enjoy the silence"

james brooks (j_brooks), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 18:49 (nineteen years ago)

"the blood will crawl"

San Diva Gyna (and a Masala DOsaNUT on the side) (donut), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 18:54 (nineteen years ago)

Even better, then.

I'm gonna buy the shit outta this thing, I used to have all those records on vinyl but any goth worth his salt had sold his vinyl collection for dope before the nineties got started

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 00:19 (nineteen years ago)

ned's story has had me giggling all night thinking about it

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 01:38 (nineteen years ago)

they should've put a Samhain track instead of the Misfits song

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 01:40 (nineteen years ago)

8. "Melody Lee" - The Damned

While a great song this is a RIDICULOUS choice when the obvious candidate is 1982's "The Dog," which is a slow gloomy epic about Claudia from Interview with the Vampire. How much more freakin' goth can you GET?

OTM, though I'd have gone for Anything, a song made for goths to flail to if ever there was one.

Ben Dot (1977), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 02:23 (nineteen years ago)

That's a great tracklist.
Actual important bands for the most part, as opposed to a couple important bands and a pile of scenestery junk.

And on The Damned song Choice, my vote is for 'Plan 9 Channel Seven' with a secondary choice of 'Nasty.'
What album is The Dog off of?
I'm sure I have it, but I rarely pay attention to individual songs unless they're really important(like I know the entire tracklist for Machinegun Ettequite.

The GZeus (The GZeus), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 15:18 (nineteen years ago)

What album is The Dog off of?

Strawberries

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 15:20 (nineteen years ago)

AFI sticks out a bit at the end of disc 3. I probably won't be getting this as I already have most of the songs I know on it.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 15:24 (nineteen years ago)

Anyway, I was thinking this morning that instead of a DVD it would have been interesting to have a fourth CD of goth fallout in acts after the eighties -- like a Children of Nuggets deal but not so limited and self-conscious, and with an ear to things that were actually hits for the most part, somewhere. Random ideas for inclusion:

Something from RZA/Wu-Tang, easily. Actually, something from Gravediggaz would be even more obvious.

NIN, no brainer. "Hurt" is the kinda obvious choice but it works.

Whichever song on Hole's debut album is the one cloning "Dark Entries" by Bauhaus

Mylene Farmer (Ally or Spencer to thread)

Portishead, "All Mine"

Smashing Pumpkins, probably "Disarm" or "Zero"

Something from La Britney. I keep thinking "I'm a Slave 4 U" just because of the goth fascination with Prince.

Any number of possible nineties-and-after metal selections but for now Metallica's "The Unforgiven"

Suede, probably something from Dog Man Star

Prodigy, "Breathe" (maybe "Voodoo People" instead)

Something by DMX, probably. (Assuming, as Dan has suggested, that DMX is the hip-hop KMFDM.)

An Antony and the Johnsons track, I'd guess. (In fact anything feeding into the line of descent among psych/freak via the Marc Almond/Coil/Current 93 axis.)

Linkin Park, "In the End" (goth-via-Depeche)

Etc. etc. Any other/better choices?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 15:28 (nineteen years ago)

Well, except for the rights issues.... and everyone definingly goth differently.

(Sorry. Killjoy here. Ignore. Move along!)

CONTRIBUTE SOMETHING, PUNK.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 15:43 (nineteen years ago)

I've got most of these on vinyl but it looks as good as goth compilations get and I might be tempted. Maybe the "right band wrong song" thing (e.g. Damned, Siouxsie) is a licensing issue?

Some of the bands on the Cleopatra box suit having "listen" appended to their names.

Here's picture of a lad with stupid hair:

I never found anything at all off of Strawberries got in the least. Sounds like a Beatles or XTC album. I like it, but it's happy.

The GZeus (The GZeus), Thursday, 20 July 2006 16:08 (nineteen years ago)

Executive Slacks!
"I'm coming after you with a KNIFE I'm gonna put it in you! It's Gonna hurt!"

The GZeus (The GZeus), Thursday, 20 July 2006 16:09 (nineteen years ago)

Needs more Christian Death.
Everything needs more Christian Death.
But I think they wanted to put up something off their most important album, and once you get into the next two albums things get all Dadaist or Noisey as hell, and after that we have to choose between Christian Deaths...

Proof they were more about Important bands/albums: no Shadow Project.
Love that band, but not very influential. I hear echos of them in Deadsy, but I think that's coincidence.

The GZeus (The GZeus), Thursday, 20 July 2006 16:16 (nineteen years ago)

I like it, but it's happy.

You seriously think "The Dog" is happy?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 July 2006 16:33 (nineteen years ago)

That's why you need to read my story. ;-)

*reads story*

...oh my.

Telephonething (Telephonething), Friday, 21 July 2006 01:20 (nineteen years ago)

Everything on Strawberries has a glassy happiness save Ignite, which I suspect has different production credits.
I never really payed attention to the lyrics on Strawberries because I never really wanted to sing along ot anything but Ignite(I like XTC, but they did that sound better).
I place the blame on the producer.
Too clean and shiny. Too slow on most songs, and the rest lack any edge or groove. It sounds more like an attempt to sell alot of records than Phantasmagira was. And I like Phantasmagoria ALOT.
Again, I blame the producer.
I've heard live recordings of songs off that album and they rip, rock, and rule.

The GZeus (The GZeus), Friday, 21 July 2006 21:31 (nineteen years ago)

I think you made up the "goth fascination with Prince" just because you want it to be true.

Actually it's very true. I DJed a goth night for three years and we played "When Doves Cry" almost every single week. It always filled the floor.

Mallory L . O'Donnell (That Bitch Camille), Saturday, 22 July 2006 16:51 (nineteen years ago)

I don't like Prince.

What country/city were you in?
What years were these?

These could all factor into hat.
Hell, it's a good song at it was VERY popular and it's dancable.
I odn't think that alone can constitute a "goth fascination with Prince"

The GZeus (The GZeus), Sunday, 23 July 2006 14:36 (nineteen years ago)

Makes sense. There's far less distance, production and vocal-wise, between "When Doves Cry" and, say, "Fascination Street" than one would think..

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Sunday, 23 July 2006 14:56 (nineteen years ago)

GZeus, trust me, you're wrong. ;-)

Also, roots in glam. The band photo poster from Purple Rain, I ask you. (Then there's folks like Trent and Mr. Corgan and many others who are admitted Prince freaks...)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 23 July 2006 15:16 (nineteen years ago)

I don't like Prince.

Have you checked your pulse lately?

Perhaps you truly are one of the Undead.

Mallory L . O'Donnell (That Bitch Camille), Sunday, 23 July 2006 15:21 (nineteen years ago)

I didn't realise most of that stuff was considered "Goth".

I.M. (I.M.), Sunday, 23 July 2006 15:57 (nineteen years ago)

thinking of "when doves cry" as goth makes so much unexpected sense it is breaking my head.

Baaderonixx: the lost ILX years (baaderonixx), Monday, 25 September 2006 13:51 (nineteen years ago)

The lack of 'x-post' concerns me.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 25 September 2006 13:56 (nineteen years ago)

Half of these songs are in the box of tapes, covered in dust, mildew and cobwebs, skulking in the corner of my basement like an unwholesome artifact from dark pre-modern times.

Perfect!

17. "The Hanging Garden" - AFI

^ can you do that? Are they trying to make it seem like there's only one Cure song in this set?

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 25 September 2006 15:31 (nineteen years ago)

That's a cover.

I have to say, I kind of want to kick Christian Death in the nuts right now.

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Monday, 25 September 2006 18:32 (nineteen years ago)

As well you should.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 25 September 2006 18:40 (nineteen years ago)

That's a cover.

I know, that's why I said "Are they trying to make it seem like there's only one Cure song in this set?"

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 25 September 2006 18:42 (nineteen years ago)

I totally just ordered this. I hate you guys.

adam (adam), Monday, 25 September 2006 20:16 (nineteen years ago)

Because my girlfriend is going to see 3 goth cds bound in lace up pleather and die laughing.

adam (adam), Monday, 25 September 2006 20:17 (nineteen years ago)

I warned my wife by saying "I just bought the most ludicrous thing ever" and then showed her the corset.

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Monday, 25 September 2006 20:23 (nineteen years ago)

Some pretty weird choices for certain artists. They'd have licensed more representative tracks from the same record labels, so the logic escapes me. At least they got "Now I'm Feeling Zombiefied" right.

Time to dust off that Wax Trax! Black Box for companion listening...

Myke. (Myke Weiskopf), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 00:11 (nineteen years ago)

No one has mentioned yet that this thing comes wrapped in a corset!

see, my promo did not come in an actual box - just slipsleeves, xeroxed liner notes, no corset

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 00:35 (nineteen years ago)

What is the "superior dance" emoticon? Because I need one right now.

ok wtf are those things

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 20:07 (nineteen years ago)

Agnatha - Ichthyomyzon unicuspis - The picture is of the northern hemisphere parasitic species Ichthyomyzon unicuspis. The individual on the left is a male who was very near to spawning. The individual on the right is a female that was spawning when caught. Their total body lengths are approximately 18cm for the female and slightly larger for the male as he isn't spawning yet, around 22 cm. The length bar isn't on this picture but the oral disc of the female is approximately 1cm cross just to give you an idea of the size of their head region.

Myke. (Myke Weiskopf), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 21:52 (nineteen years ago)

In other words, it's a silver lamprey.

Myke. (Myke Weiskopf), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 21:54 (nineteen years ago)

I warned my wife by saying "I just bought the most ludicrous thing ever" and then showed her the corset.

hahahaha ... there should be more stories that end with the punchline, "and then I showed her the corset."

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 22:35 (nineteen years ago)

What's with the whole goth dead/not dead stuff lately? Even the Guardian has a piece today: http://arts.guardian.co.uk/features/story/0,,1883051,00.html

Baaderonixx in the year of the locusts (baaderonixx), Friday, 29 September 2006 07:23 (nineteen years ago)

"In fact, even the goth look was partly happenstance: wearing nothing but black meant the band could put all their washing in one load."

Now picturing a disastrous pre-all-black load of laundry where the Sisters Of Mercy's cotton Y-fronts are tuned grey by indiscriminate sorting.

bendy (bendy), Friday, 29 September 2006 08:47 (nineteen years ago)
