Via Indieworkshop.com: Danish producer Trentemøller to release debut
http://www.indieworkshop.com/news.php?date=2006-07-25#3067

In October Poker Flat Recordings will release the debut record from Danish producer Anders Trentemøller entitled The Last Resort. On the album he plays such instruments as guitars, bass, celesta, glockenspiel, melodica and musicbox.

Trentemøller started releasing 12 inches on such labels as Audiomatique ("Physical Fraction"), Out Of Orbit, 3rd Floor and Tic Tac Toe in 2004/2005 before signing to Poker Flat and releasing three singles ("Polar Shift", "Sunstroke" and the "Nam Nam EP"). He has recently remixed tracks for Røyksopp and Pet Shop Boys.

Guest vocalists on the album include Danish singer Ane Trolle as well as Richard Davis, who previously lent vocals to Swayzak‘s "Speak Easy" on K7 and has released albums on Punkt and Kitty-Yo. Guest musicians include Henrik Vibskov (accoustic drums), Mikael Simpson (distorted bass, guitar), Arnaud Donez (guitar, bass) and Thomas "DJ T.O.M." Bertelsen (Scratching).

Preceding the album's release will be the 12" single "Always Something Better" which will be out in September. It will include the original vocal version featuring Richard Davis and remixes by Matthew Herbert and Trentemøller (dub & club mix).

Trentemøller will continue his world tour until the end of the year and US dates are being scheduled.

Hey Boys and Girls! My name is Anders Trentemoller, and I live in Copenhagen, Denmark. I am composing, producing and remixing, most of the time, under my last name Trentemoller. I have just finished my debut album, and it will hit the streets in september 2006! It's called The Last Resort. The album will show a new side of me for most of you. It's a very personal album, made not for the dancefloor but for all you dreamers, lovers and spacers out there. I'm so proud and happy about it, and I hope you will like it too. On the CD you can also find a bonus- CD with nearly all my singles released on Pokerflat and Audiomatique. PLUS there will be a vinyl editon with most of the tracks from the album for the vinyl junkies too! Recently: check out my remix of The Knife 'We share our mother's health'! It's out now!

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 19:09 (eighteen years ago)

Fuckin' A! Ooh, melodica!

yer mam! (yer mam!), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 19:12 (eighteen years ago)

On the CD you can also find a bonus- CD with nearly all my singles released on Pokerflat and Audiomatique

fandango (fandango), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 19:27 (eighteen years ago)

Interesting to hear how Herbert will tackle the mighty 'Møller.

yer mam! (yer mam!), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 19:33 (eighteen years ago)

i just shat my pants

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 19:37 (eighteen years ago)

Here's hoping he'll show the same lack of respect towards guest vocalists and Real Instruments as he shows in his remixes.

The track 'Missing You' on his Myspace is very atmospheric and beautiful but I can't help but the rest of that profile makes me suspect the album in general is going to go all Tiefschwarz/Nathan Fake. In other words, hamfisted attempt at making 'proper music' while deliberately avoiding what he's actually good at, ie whacking out amazing chunky slabs of dirty house music.

I don't have a good feeling about this.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 21:39 (eighteen years ago)

Argh, I mean The track 'Missing You' on his Myspace is very atmospheric and beautiful but the rest of that profile makes me suspect that...

I should really learn to proofread first.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 21:40 (eighteen years ago)

What kind of voice does Ane Trolle have? Sweet and indie?

jergins (jergins), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 21:48 (eighteen years ago)

yeah this --

The album will show a new side of me for most of you.

-- is like "electronic artist album kiss of death," isn't it?

bonus disc will still probably be worth it ....

dmr (Renard), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 21:48 (eighteen years ago)

Richard Davis' voice could work well

jergins (jergins), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 21:50 (eighteen years ago)

"Hi, my name's Axl and I'm in a band called Guns'n'Roses. You might already know us from our infamously debauched behaviour and blistering live shows that have made us a global rock phenomenon before even releasing an album. Well, it's recorded and I'm very proud of it. It's it's not really one for rocking out to. My friend Slash plays glockenspiel and mellotron on it, and I got my Scandinavian friend Lene to do some ethereal duetting with me. It's a much more personal album for me. PS - do we sound like the Cocteau Twins yet?"

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 21:52 (eighteen years ago)

is this album Trentemøller goes Max Tundra? I predict a 9.3 Pitchfork rating

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 22:21 (eighteen years ago)

Hopefully the "this is for the dreamers and lovers out there" warning means it'll be like "The Forest" and not a major shark-jumping exercise.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 23:18 (eighteen years ago)

have same ambivalence as most to this project. on the one hand, SQUEEE! think how good it could be!!! on the other, well, think how not-good it could be, hello tiefschwarz.

maybe there should be a rule along the lines of "house and techno artists only allowed to make albums which are compilations of their singles, unless they are called ellen allien"

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 07:19 (eighteen years ago)

electrohouse artists should only be allowed to remix major label coffeedance

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 07:42 (eighteen years ago)

at least that's what the last 6 months have taught us!

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 07:43 (eighteen years ago)

Ronan OTM.

When I interviewed Trentemoller by e-mail (he was very snooty actually, worse than Superpitcher b/c at least Superpitcher's schtick was novel) he said he was using a lot of live instruments on the album. THE FEAR!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 21:56 (eighteen years ago)

Funny you should mention Superpitcher on this thread because he's the one house producer I'd *like* to see produce a downtempo wistful shoegazey album with guest vocalists and live instruments. Because he'd be really fucking good at it.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 27 July 2006 07:55 (eighteen years ago)

anyone have a tracklist for this?

Good Dog (Good Dog), Thursday, 27 July 2006 07:57 (eighteen years ago)

btw, there *is* a new bootleg singles comp floating around slsk right now (vol 3)

Dominique (dleone), Thursday, 27 July 2006 12:12 (eighteen years ago)

interested to see how this pony goes with other tricks.

Cam B (Cam_B), Thursday, 27 July 2006 13:36 (eighteen years ago)

this album is, surprisingly, really very good indeed (on one listen to three-quarters of it). it's a bit dubsteppy (some incredible rumbling, evil bass in there); it's also a bit trip-hop. it reminds me of TRICKY! it's not wistful or twee like the nathan fake album - it's dark and menacing.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 4 August 2006 11:03 (eighteen years ago)

tracklist -

01 take me into your skin
02 vamp
03 evil dub
04 always something better

07 like two strangers
08 the very last resort
09 snowflake
10 chameleon
11 into the trees (serenetti part 3)
12 moan
13 miss you

the bonus cd:

01 always something better (vocal version ft richard davis)
02 moan (vocal version ft ane trolle)
03 physical fraction
04 polar shift
05 chameleon
06 sunstroke

10 rykketid
11 prana

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 4 August 2006 11:06 (eighteen years ago)

Ooh! Excited now.

lexurian (lexurian), Friday, 4 August 2006 11:13 (eighteen years ago)

Excellent idea to include a bonus disc. Of the Poker Flat/Audiomatique singles it would appear the only track missing is "Minimal Fox".

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 5 August 2006 12:14 (eighteen years ago)

'vamp' is dubstep schaffel!

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 6 August 2006 14:08 (eighteen years ago)

why does the lex have this and not me

cutty (mcutt), Sunday, 6 August 2006 15:18 (eighteen years ago)

also since when does the lex like indietronica

ferzaffe (flezaffe), Sunday, 6 August 2006 18:06 (eighteen years ago)

since "Orchestra Of Bubbles" fez!

I'm keeping an open mind about this, but half-expecting another "Movements" let-down too.

fandango (fandango), Sunday, 6 August 2006 18:13 (eighteen years ago)

there is no movements let-down!

i hate the concept of indietronica, i don't want to like it, but i cannot gwet around the fact that my top 3 albums of 2006 so far are ellen allien & apparat, the knife and junior boys.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 7 August 2006 09:57 (eighteen years ago)

am I "wrong" because I didn't like it??

fandango (fandango), Monday, 7 August 2006 10:02 (eighteen years ago)

don't ever let yourself believe that fandango.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 7 August 2006 10:06 (eighteen years ago)

haha I don't =)

I'm not sure if Ellen Allien & Apparat will even make my top ten Lex! I do like it heaps but I'm pretty much with Susan (I think) that it still feels more like an amazing side-project than a 'real' EA album much of the time. But then there's a thread for this ... and this isn't it. fin.

fandango (fandango), Monday, 7 August 2006 10:16 (eighteen years ago)

i haven't been keeping up with albums this year!

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 7 August 2006 10:22 (eighteen years ago)

I now can't help but see Fandango, Susan, lf and trees as a faction these days! What do you guys disagree on again?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 7 August 2006 10:23 (eighteen years ago)

Jamie Lidell? :/

fandango (fandango), Monday, 7 August 2006 11:18 (eighteen years ago)

There is a distinct lack of Beta Boy on that bonus disc.

Lex is there any way you can get a copy of this to me if I promise to give you Body Language 2 back?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 7 August 2006 11:27 (eighteen years ago)

you have to give me body language back ANYWAY.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 7 August 2006 11:51 (eighteen years ago)

I am kind of unpsyched about this.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 7 August 2006 14:14 (eighteen years ago)

I mean about bothering to hear it.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 7 August 2006 14:14 (eighteen years ago)

what i said on my shortlived thread:
Listening now for the first few times to the new album, The Last Resort, and I gotta say - it's the best new Radiohead album that isn't a Radiohead album. Someone should hire this dude to do the beats for Thom Yorke's next solo joint...

note to admins: search function can't seem to handle special characters, as it turns up nothing for "trentemøller" (which is why i titled my aborted thread w/ multiple spellings, might wanna add "trentemoller" and "trentemoeller" into this thread title....)

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Tuesday, 8 August 2006 10:54 (eighteen years ago)

i hear far more dub than dubstep proper, but i definitely hear an overlap with burial, at least in the grit and the murk.

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Tuesday, 8 August 2006 10:55 (eighteen years ago)

Search is bollocksed. I just tried a Question title search for 'trente' and it brought up two other threads with 'Trentemøller' in the title (but not beginning with) but not this one.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Tuesday, 8 August 2006 10:58 (eighteen years ago)

i think search doesn't work for anything in the most recent three weeks or so, Konal

my favorite TMOEUILLR track is still "minimal fox"

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Tuesday, 8 August 2006 11:38 (eighteen years ago)

ugh, this is total indietronica, and not in a good way, i fear :-(

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 08:47 (eighteen years ago)

no "minimal fox", no credibility

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 13:06 (eighteen years ago)

i dunno toby, i always think of indietronica as mimsy, flimsy, polite - nathan fake, four tet et al - rather than dark and menacing like the last resort. indietronica doesn't have bass like this!

it's by no means a dancefloor album, and my praise is less "best thing evah" than "thank god it's not as soul-crushingly awful as the tiefschwarz album", but still, it really is very good!

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 13:11 (eighteen years ago)

"no "minimal fox", no credibility"

I agree, "Minimal Fox" is really good! It should be on the bonus.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 13:15 (eighteen years ago)

Fashion victims like myself (or wannabe fashion victims, given the state of my savings) may be interested to note that a contributing percussionist on the album if Henrik Vibskov. Copenhagen seems like an interesting place right now.

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 14:23 (eighteen years ago)

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 14:24 (eighteen years ago)

I'm pretty sure this guy did the Run Jeremy's Window Licker 12", no? What's the general consensus on that? I find it delightful. And the clear vinyl sho'is priiiidddddy.

this album is not dark and menacing, to me, and its definitely indietronic.

i like it though! reminds me of Calla and Senking and there are good dub techno bits in it

i predict an 8.7 Pitchfork rating

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 16:28 (eighteen years ago)

i have no patience for all-growed-up electronic snoozerwonks from erstwhile floor-movers, but i have to say, on my first handful of listens, it's pretty righteous.

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 17:39 (eighteen years ago)

"Miss You" is the favorite so far -- Closer Musik's "Maria" made more graceful and weepy.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 20:29 (eighteen years ago)

And some other parts are reminding me of, er, David Holmes.

*ducks*

Luis Skank Bloc Polonia (Andy_K), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 20:54 (eighteen years ago)

i haven't heard this but seriously people.. "techno albums"? come on now.

"i don't know what we agree on except that we didn't end up liking movements very much. oh and i like vapaa muurari live better than tulenkantaja but trees disagrees although he may have changed his mind now, i'm not sure. "

It's not being anti-movements actually, it's the nature of your enjoyment of villalobos and related stuff. I'm not being critical!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 22:03 (eighteen years ago)

"techno albums"? come on now.

"okay tim...i came here just to say "let go tim" but then you made the implicit explicit and everything worked out!"

? Do you mean explaining my comment w/r/t Villalobos?

To further elaborate: I get the sense that all of you like minimalism most when it's bypassed electro-house entirely - more of an unbroken line from the older microhouse.

You and Trees both like Animal Collective too, yeah? Which makes sense. Villalobos = freaky folk music, kinda.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 11 August 2006 01:16 (eighteen years ago)

I get the sense that all of you like minimalism most when it's bypassed electro-house entirely - more of an unbroken line from the older microhouse.

This is reasonably true! I have issues with Animal Collective tho'

I possibly even prefer many of the tracks (big, fun, hooky!) mentioned on that Haircut House thread to a lot of Electrohouse that seems to wash over me somehow. But it's not at all easy to navigate through the cheese (everyone has their limit!) in that area either...

I still haven't got round to seeking out those hookier electrohouse mixes (or trad stuff I asked about on that other thread) so not exactly laying down any permanent boundaries on my tastes here. I feel quite a n00b when it comes to "House" which isn't minimal- or late 80's-early 90's pop-rave stuff or odd tracks I've come across accidentally via techno :Z

so far this record is ok for me -- there is a side to this that's interesting, in a way totally different from most of his singles, but maybe I wish it was a more fun record

And I think I like Trentemoller's recent original (single) tracks better than his remixes right now (the Knife one never really took off for me) -- in fact Vamp on this record is one of my fave parts about it

Dominique (dleone), Friday, 11 August 2006 05:25 (eighteen years ago)

Ok the dub element being discussed is making it sound more interesting.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 11 August 2006 19:39 (eighteen years ago)

This is so post-rock. It's like if the recent Bark Psychosis comeback had been all ostentatiously futurist rather than sub-Mogwai.

I'm not sure if I like it, on the whole, yet.

Ronan the "dub element" being discussed is over-emphasised in this thread. I think you will dislike this record, at least the first disc.

Except perhaps "In The Trees (Serenetti Pt 3)" which I have in a live Trentemoller set and which sounds awesome and quite compulsive in that context. Those drums!

I'm surprised that there aren't more attempts to compromise b/w the dancefloor and the atmospherics on the first disc - a few tracks like "Prana" or "The Forest" wouldn't have gone astray surely.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 17:18 (eighteen years ago)

I've come back to this too, and it suits this time of year extremely well.

I'd say analogies with Radiohead are unfair, as the latter sound weak and reedy in comparison. The Last Resort is one of the most expansive downbeat records I've heard in a while (Lindstrøm apart) and is definitely thicker and more menacing than the Burial album (which I also like a lot).

I gave this one final listen before selling it back last week. I got it the week it came out and had great expectations and it just wasn't what I wanted or needed. Honestly, the last three tracks (on the cd) are great and for me they would've made an exceptional 12", but that's about it for me on this one. Tim F way, way OTM upthread when he said: "This is so post-rock. It's like if the recent Bark Psychosis comeback had been all ostentatiously futurist rather than sub-Mogwai."
