hi, music obsessive just like the rest of you, 19, going into second year of university studying English Lit, love cricket, footie (soccer), reading music reviews, writing poetry, being darkly amusing, the completed works of legendary satirist Chris Morris, favourite music includes both Blur AND Mogwai, neither of whom are shite, Mansun, The The, The Beta Band, Yes, early Rev, late Talk Talk, The Electric Soft Parade (all-too easily dismissed, actually. I have more to say about them at some point), The Secret Machines, Ride, Spiritualized, XTC, early Roxy, late Pulp...etc etc etc...

above all, however, i'm one crazy customer :D :D :D :D so get ready for some madnessssss!!!!! ;-)

(that last sentence was parody)

Louis Jagger (Haberdager), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 21:20 (eighteen years ago)

Indeed. And please never write like that sentence again. (Otherwise, HI DERE welcome to us etc. etc. But the Electric Soft Parade are not all that, at all.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 21:22 (eighteen years ago)

OK, you've just lit my touchpaper, opened my bullpen, yanked my bellrope, whatever you wanna call it, I'm off. The Electric Soft Parade's genius can be discovered by appreciating the quite staggering gamble they took with their first single, Silent To The Dark. An extremely catchy, singalong, chordtastic 3-minute pop song. Which somehow ends up nine minutes long. Now, notwithstanding that I am a sucker for length, the manner in which this song breaks down into a piano-led sound-collage (backed up by a drum-machine sound any NME hack worth his salt would describe as 'trip-hop') before reprising the chorus amidst a sea of synth five minutes later and then ending with more 'trip-hop', this time over what sounds like Pachabel's Canon played on a distant church-organ, and lastly a bombastic BR-style gong...the manner in which such a routine song has been wrenched into something infinitely more majestic quite enthralled me the first time I heard it and it remains a favourite to this day.

Even if they then released the opening 3-minute bit on its own as 'Silent To The Dark II'. Cowards. ;-)

Plus, their second album, The American Adventure, is one of the best albums of the 00's and beats Dark Side Of The Moon comprehensively at its own game, hands down, so there. :P

Louis Jagger (Haberdager), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 21:32 (eighteen years ago)

oh ur gonna be a treat

david allen grier (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 21:46 (eighteen years ago)

Hey, I don't want to gain notoriety by slaying sacred cows. I'll slay 'em if they deserve slaying. For instance, Bob Dylan is neither the greatest artist ever nor a talentless charlatan, but a fantastic lyricist and songwriter with musical limitations whom I alas rarely listen to on account on it not really being my kinda thing.

Radiohead, depressingly, are just as good as everyone says they are. That kinda pisses me off, but I'm not going to savage them just for the sake of it.

Sigur Ros mostly bore me but the post is ending NOW-

darkly amusing..

like guinness shits? I find that they're darkly amusing. But that's enough scatology.

What uni has the pleasure of your top-up fees Mr Jagger?

Major Alfonso (Major Alfonso), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 23:39 (eighteen years ago)

erm, Cambridge uni. Our music scene, by the way, is almost irredeemable, which is why I'm joining the radio station next year in a futile push to get people listening to stuff that isn't Matchbox 20 or The Kaiser Chiefs. I'll fail. The moment I'll fail is the moment I put Wilco's 'Less Than You Think' on because the last 12 minutes feature some "awesome" feedback manipulation.

Oh, and the amount of complacent egotism here is quite staggering to behold...

...but once you meet the right people, it becomes sort of worth it...

Louis Jagger (Haberdager), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 23:46 (eighteen years ago)

I'm playing it down of course. I'm actually as chuffed as Kate Winslet's dildo to be here...

Shall I compare thee

To a dying powerchord

You’re in tune apparently

But your sound is being ignored

You won’t be extinguished

Like an answered cellphone

Always intended to disperse

Not cut off like a dialtone

Is this you?

My mama always taught me not to give out too much info on the internet

Also I can't believe you used a mini-vacuum cleaner as a "soulsucker"

...

no mockery on the internet is genuine.

But there is a newby thread where you say hello, posting a new thread on anything invites challenge, nevermind introducing yourself.

well some constructive advice: google indexes this board, therefore it can be data mined by spammers, so you ought to google-proof that e-mail address on your posts unless you want e-mails extolling the virtues of RAIPSEHX and erectile dysfunction cures.

I forgot, you Americans don't have an equivalent phrase for our own 'taking the piss'. It's something I do quite a lot, so I'm steeling myself for a whole lotta misunderstandin'...

And cheers for the advice, MA...

April is the cruelest month, breeding
Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing
Memory and desire, stirring
Dull roots with spring rain.
Winter kept us warm, covering
Earth in forgetful snow, feeding
A little life with dried tubers.
Summer surprised us, coming over the Starnbergersee
With a shower of rain; we stopped in the colonnade,
And went on in sunlight, into the Hofgarten,
And drank coffee, and talked for an hour.
Bin gar keine Russin, stamm' aus Litauen, echt deutsch.
And when we were children, staying at the arch-duke's,
My cousin's, he took me out on a sled,
And I was frightened. He said, Marie,
Marie, hold on tight. And down we went.
In the mountains, there you feel free.
Cellphone cellphone cellphone cellphone cellphone

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 27 July 2006 00:46 (eighteen years ago)

but nobody is speaking.
Am I a loser?

Louis Jagger (Haberdager), Thursday, 27 July 2006 00:49 (eighteen years ago)

"Taking the piss" roughly equivilant to the American "I'm just fuckin' with you, man", no?
