Just curious. A bit out there, but Antony has quite a delivery.

mxyzptlk, Saturday, 23 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i think, "david tibet has finally lost his fucking mind." as i thought when i discovered he liked klaus nomi AND when he decided to put out a double cd by baby dee.

your null fame, Saturday, 23 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, please can we all get a little more out there. Saw him maybe a year ago with Genesis P-Orridge and Marianne Nowottny at Knitting Factory NYC. Fine masterful performance and delivery. A great show by all!

Bob Fey, Sunday, 24 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i believe them/him to be great. really enjoy his delivery as well and makes for a nice change of pace whenever i throw either release (ep & album)on .actually hoping to hear something new from him soon .

william harris, Sunday, 24 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

friends of mine saw him/them play in NY and were bowled over by him. i heard his CD and thought it was (lazy comparison coming up) very nice in a dramatic scott walker-y kind of way.

rener, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i bought the "fell in love with a dead boy" for my radio station. at first people hated it, but eventually it won over almost every dj. "crippled and starfish" is one of the best songs i've heard in a while.

Otis, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

four years pass...
This video is great. Watch..

Jesse, Friday, 2 March 2007 07:41 (eighteen years ago)

I don't get it. In fact, I cannot listen to it.
But then again, I'm not a big fan of the back-of-the-hand-stapled-to-the-forehead bit.
But I can imagine some sorts liking it.

peepee, Friday, 2 March 2007 13:12 (eighteen years ago)

total shite

electricsound, Friday, 2 March 2007 13:15 (eighteen years ago)

Mr. Muscle forcing bursting
Stingy thingy into little me, me, me
But just "ripple" said the cripple
As my jaw dropped to the ground
Smile smile

Terrible. Jesus Christ.

nb I think I'd like that song WITHOUT Antony's shite singing and lyrics, but the cringes he induces put me uncomfortably close to having an aneurysm.

Curt1s Stephens, Friday, 2 March 2007 16:21 (eighteen years ago)

Being forced to cringe and choosing not to turn away is a big part of the appeal (it's what the song's about, of course, but it applies to Antony's music in general). If there is any appeal, I mean. I like it, but I can understand why a lot of folks wouldn't. Video has a similar car-crash magnetism.

Pye Poudre, Friday, 2 March 2007 17:08 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I like a lot of cringe-inducing music, but I just don't like Antony. If his voice were just 1% different I'd probably love it, but somehow he hits the EXACT spot that I don't want to hear (which I admit is really really impressive!!)

Curt1s Stephens, Friday, 2 March 2007 17:19 (eighteen years ago)

See, here's the thing... I listen to the song, thinking, "Gah! These lyrics are terrible and obvious. We all know the cliches, Antony, tell us something new. Or at least say the same old shit well."

And I watch the video, thinking, "Jesus Christ, is he really gonna contrast the Matthew Sheppard thing with fucking cheeseball ballet dancers? REALLY really?" And it looks so cheap, and the string-tugs are all so garishly telegraphed.

But the chorus just slays me. And I get a little teary by the end, in spite of my resistance. And the whole thing sticks with me afterwards. Sure, it's "back-of-the-hand-stapled-to-the-forehead" as peepee, said, but it's also much more confrontational than that. It's a very self-aware celebration of the most awful (transcendent) excesses. Like Antony's daring you to back down, saying, "Yes, as a matter of fact the back of my hand IS stapled to my forehead. What, can't you take it?" You know? An apocalyptically exaggerated, exploded version of drag show tragedy aesthetics. It somehow seems very knowing to me. Maybe I'm reading too much into it...

Pye Poudre, Friday, 2 March 2007 17:38 (eighteen years ago)

antony's lyrics can be intentionally artsy-cutsey, but he can also drop the metaphors and speak directly and that's when he's most effective. "cripple and the starfish" also includes these lines, effective + chilling evocation of masochism:

It's true I always wanted love to be
Hurtful
And it's true I always wanted love to be
Filled with pain and bruises

I am very happy
So please hit me
I am very very happy
So come on hurt me

and these are tops as great opening lines on albums:

Hope there's someone
Who'll take care of me
When I die, when I go

Hope there's someone
Who'll set my heart free
Nice to hold when I'm tired

and yeah, the voice is dealbreaker for a lot of people

Edward III, Friday, 2 March 2007 17:53 (eighteen years ago)

I read about him during the big album of the year hype he had a couple years back.Everyone was gushing about how special and wonderful his voice was. Album of the year...

This is the first time I have heard his voice.

It is like internet dating, people are never as attractive as you imagine.

Display Name, Friday, 2 March 2007 21:22 (eighteen years ago)

first time I heard him I thought, this guy's been listening to too much devendra banhart. chill out with the trill already! but "the lake" really hooked me. it's hard to be gothic without being goth these days, and he pulled it off.

tbh hearing him for the first time over shitty super-compresed 96kbs isn't the best format, either.

Edward III, Friday, 2 March 2007 22:05 (eighteen years ago)

The most affecting/least affected Antony: on Lou Reed's live Animal Serenade

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 2 March 2007 23:59 (eighteen years ago)

i remember interviewing antony and he was like fuck these current 93 goth bitches. but they pay my bills.

after signing a shitload of autographs for them

rizzx, Saturday, 3 March 2007 00:13 (eighteen years ago)

whoa, just saw that video posted upthread for the first time. seriously creepy, but very good. that's what the scott walker video from the drift should have been like.

modestmickey, Saturday, 3 March 2007 03:22 (eighteen years ago)

It's true I always wanted Love to be
Hurtful
It's true I always wanned Love to be
Filled with pain

It'll grow back like a starfish

I'm full of the need for the love for this.
Like a windfall.
I'm very happy.

My school has gone away:
They hated me anyway,
I was such a idiot.

I'll grow back like a starfish.
I sold my love down the wizened river,
Down the muddy never,

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 4 March 2007 02:39 (eighteen years ago)

Here is the oblivious, obvious,
Moaningness.
My infant spirit would awake
To the terror
Of the lake.

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 4 March 2007 02:41 (eighteen years ago)

video = really, really awful.
song is slightly better
I love I Am A Bird Now
that album has 2 songs that really move me: the first one, and Fistful of Love (which absolutely kills).
took me 3 or 4 listens to get into his voice but with good material it's spectacular
too much of his material is average, but when he hits it - wow.

davelus, Sunday, 4 March 2007 03:14 (eighteen years ago)

Well done for yr appropriation of the quotidian.

Kudos.

RJG, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 19:24 (eighteen years ago)

A good friend of mine works with Antony.
I don't have the heart to tell him the truth.

peepee, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 19:33 (eighteen years ago)

this guy is my pick for the act I pretty much like but can't actually sit through a whole album of.

I really love "The Lake" though, but then I'm always up (down?) for more Poe in music.

Roz, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 19:38 (eighteen years ago)

He was one of the standouts in that recent Leonard Cohen DVD I'm Your Man. I like him but can see why he could be offputting to some.

Lostandfound, Thursday, 3 May 2007 03:17 (eighteen years ago)

one year passes...

he is playing portland sept 5 with the oregon symphony [nico muhly conducting]. does anyone have a link to the presale password?

as for the thread title...i like him. seen him 3 x's and would really like to catch this portland show.

drone/a/sore, Monday, 7 July 2008 22:47 (seventeen years ago)

I saw him at Doug Fir in Portland. It was flawless. Would love to see this symphony show, (though I think it's up against Steel Pole Bathtub...)

Nate Carson, Monday, 7 July 2008 22:56 (seventeen years ago)

Whoa, they reunited? Didn't hear about that! Forget who I saw them open for way back when...

Ned Raggett, Monday, 7 July 2008 22:56 (seventeen years ago)

x-post nate carson::

i see that this http://www.musicfestnw.com/performers.html is happening in september. do you have a link to a better schedule? i would like to catch the nightmarchers and a few other bands but the website schedule is not complete.

drone/a/sore, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 01:56 (seventeen years ago)

I don't have a link yet, but I should soon as I'm writing previews on like 15 bands for this thing. It's sponsored and curated by a weekly I freelance for...

Nate Carson, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 10:08 (seventeen years ago)

I'm sure this has been discussed elsewhere, but why does this guy sound exactly like Nina Simone? Is it a coincidence, or is it deliberate?

Tuomas, Wednesday, 9 July 2008 20:37 (seventeen years ago)

What does a Ned Raggett think of Hercules & Love Affair, then...?

A vast improvement.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 9 July 2008 20:42 (seventeen years ago)

I love Antony, but he doesn't sound "exactly like Nina Simone."

Tape Store, Wednesday, 9 July 2008 20:45 (seventeen years ago)

Well maybe not exactly, but very much like her. The first time I heard a song by this guy, for a few moments I thought it was her, and I'm a Nina Simone fan.

Tuomas, Thursday, 10 July 2008 06:41 (seventeen years ago)

Isn't that a good thing?

Nate Carson, Thursday, 10 July 2008 07:38 (seventeen years ago)

there's a major comparison there but i don't know how anyone could honestly mistake them, let alone a fan.

i did a 180 on this record. i love Antony now. I LOVE YOU ANTONY!!! xoxo

jed_, Thursday, 10 July 2008 08:44 (seventeen years ago)

Ned doens't like flashy male singers.

Scik Mouthy, Thursday, 10 July 2008 12:31 (seventeen years ago)

Yes, this is why I utterly loathe Marc Almond and Billy Mackenzie, for instance. I only have all their albums and side projects and rarities around just to be annoyed at them, and listen to them regularly to buttress my hate.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 10 July 2008 12:40 (seventeen years ago)

Now thine enemy!

Scik Mouthy, Thursday, 10 July 2008 12:45 (seventeen years ago)

Know, even.

Scik Mouthy, Thursday, 10 July 2008 12:46 (seventeen years ago)

I think I need to go back and give I Am a Bird Now another chance. I strongly disliked it when it first came out, despite giving it multiple chances to charm me. I wrote Antony off as someone I just wasn't going to get. The weird thing is, though, I've gone on to love almost everything I've heard featuring him since that album. I loved both his songs on the Bjork album, adored his turn on the I'm Not There soundtrack, and can't get enough of his songs on Hercules & Love Affair.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Thursday, 10 July 2008 12:58 (seventeen years ago)

He also does a great guest turn on Joan As Police Woman's "I Defy".

mike t-diva, Thursday, 10 July 2008 13:29 (seventeen years ago)

I find him a bit much on his own albums, song after song of him, but I think he's a fantastic guest singer. Like Ludacris.

i have to say it was pretty impressive being at the portland concert. the oregon symphony was amazing and the bew songs that were played sounded pretty good. the beyonce cover of "crazy in love" actually rocked and was very reminiscent of "blind" off of the hercules& love affair album

batwing, Thursday, 11 September 2008 21:44 (seventeen years ago)

setlist::

mysteries of love_done in total darkness. very interesting, although i really go to see live performance to see it.
new song don't know the title.....pretty mellow though.
cripple and the starfish
for today i am a boy
fell in love with a dead boy longest pause ever....at least 45 seconds of total silence. not something i am accustomed to when i attend concerts.
kiss my name i think that is what he kept repeating, although i have seen it listed as "give my name"
new song this was interesting for its use of the cellos as percussion. my fave of the new material.
rapture
ghost (?) also fairly mellow....i liked it as well.
crazy in love (beyonce) the highlight for me! antony rteally cut loose with this one and it actually rocked. he seemed to really enjoy singing it.
dust & water this changes each time he does it i think. i saw him play this at "on the boards" in seattle back in april '06 and i thing i liked that version more for the audience participation.
everything is new (moondog)
new song sadly i don't really remember much from this one.
encore-river of sorrow i have now seen him perform 4 times and each time has been special. antony did not address the audience other than to softly say "thank you". he also did not play piano (thomas bartlet did),which left me with the impression that he was not always comfortable with what his hands were doing.

I forgot about it in most of my year-end lists, but "Another World" is so fucking incredible. My favorite of his. Really haunting and depressing. Video is incredible, too. Caused me to bawl when i first watched it.

Someone Still Loves You Evan and Jaron (Tape Store), Tuesday, 27 January 2009 06:49 (sixteen years ago)

The new album is great. "Aeon" should convert even those who've held back up to now; it just builds and builds and his vocal phrasing has some very unexpected twists. The arrangements are amazing- he gets the most out of everything that's there, and when a new instrument enters it has maximum impact.

Neotropical pygmy squirrel, Tuesday, 27 January 2009 14:24 (sixteen years ago)

yeah i'm prety amazed that there's been so little metion of this album on here. i was a late convert (post H&LA) but i love him unreservedly now. "One Dove" is incredibly beautiful and "Aeon" into "Dust and Water" knocks the wind out of you (in the best possible way). My favourite record for a long time.

jed_, Tuesday, 27 January 2009 14:30 (sixteen years ago)

Jed mostly OTM. I never got into the last album, but I fell for Antony somewhere between his cover of "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" (never thought anyone could make me want to hear that song again) and "Blind". I'm still not 100% sold on The Crying Light yet, but "Aeon" and "Dust and Water" are sublime.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Tuesday, 27 January 2009 14:48 (sixteen years ago)

I liked his last two albums as well as H&LA a good bit, loved the Another World EP, but haven't spent enough time with the new album yet. Listened once on headphones at work, but that's not the right environment for what is, I suspect, quite an intimate album.

ilxor, Wednesday, 28 January 2009 04:20 (sixteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

Saw last night's show in Chicago. First time seeing Antony live, and it definitely did not disappoint. Played most of the Crying Light, a few from I am a Bird, Crazy in Love, Shake That Devil. His 6-piece band was super, especially the older gentleman who played oboe, sax, and rocked the electric guitar. Antony also made some funny comments, asking the crowd what's going on and encouraging people to divulge some personal stories. Besides playing the piano, he also did some really nice finger-snapping (seriously!). If anyone else was there, what was the first song they played? It was the only one I didn't recognize and I don't really remember the words now either, unfortunately.

stingy, Friday, 13 February 2009 17:28 (sixteen years ago)

I will not read the rest of this thread for fear that it will sully my pure childlike state of mind, so I'll just hop in and say that I looooove Antony.

Ok now I can read the rest of this thread.

Bad Banana On Broadway (kenan), Friday, 13 February 2009 17:39 (sixteen years ago)

adored his turn on the I'm Not There soundtrack, and can't get enough of his songs on Hercules & Love Affair

This is not a bad way into Antony (if you'll pardon the disgusting imagery).

Bad Banana On Broadway (kenan), Friday, 13 February 2009 17:45 (sixteen years ago)

They were really great last weekend in Knoxville.

Damn good album, isn't it?

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Saturday, 5 September 2009 10:44 (sixteen years ago)

YES.

I've been a fan of the self-titled release for a while and hadn't heard anything else, so I was quite shocked when I listened to the Crying Light. very very sparse compared to that first record, but it works out gorgeously. I see myself OD'ing on "Another World" in time, without the OD part

So has anyone else heard the new album out this week? It really has had very little fanfare at all.

I could not get into The Crying Light at all, it was actually one of the biggest disappointments of recent years but Swanlights is a massive return to form for me. I saw him do the song Ghosts six years ago and it's as great as I'd remembered. The song with Bjork is predictably my favourite track. Thank You For Your Love kind of reminds me of Dexys Midnight Runners, obviously no bad thing.

I wasn't expecting to enjoy it so much but it's great all the way through and has the warmth of I am a Bird Now.
