Minute songs

I'd like to make a tape of about a 100 songs with less than a minute playing time. I have got

- Sonic Youth: Nic Fit
- Calexico: Inch by Inch
- one or two songs by the Minutemen

Any suggestions for the remaining 96 songs/tracks?

Fat Day, "This"; Descendents, "All"; Go!, "Pizza Boy"; Velvet Cactus Society, "Child Hugging Himself in an Empty Room where the Electricity Doesn't Work Too Well"; Napalm Death, "You Suffer"; Inca Eyeball, “Satan Comes To Earth And Gets A Job At H.M.V.--A Rock Opera”; the Yummy Fur, "Fiery Jack"; Negative Approach, "Pressure"; Naked City, "Speedball"; the Residents, "Easter Woman"; Lesley Gore, "Little Sister/Things Go Better With Coke"; Quentin Crisp, "Stop The Music For A Minute."

Also, everything on the Destroy 2 record--48 songs, 10 minutes!

RAIN TREE CROW - boat's for burning

brian, Saturday, 23 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Most of Naked City by John Zorn. And Torture Garden by Naked City (I'm so fucking clever). Euclid's Nightmare by Bobby Previte and John Zorn. Most of the works of Anal Cunt. Son of Bleeargh 7" (60+ artists). A lot of Pink Flag by Wire.

It's easy to name stuff, but I have no idea if you have access to any of it for actual taping purposes.

69 Love Songs: "How Fucking Romantic", "Boa Constrictor", "Punk Love", "Roses", and "Experimental Music Love" are all under 60 seconds.

Keiko, Saturday, 23 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

...but are, unfortunately, some of the least interesting bits of 69..

I'd suggest adding Pavement's 'Here' and the Beach Boys' 'Still Believe in Me' and just stopping them when they reach their titles, but that's probably cheating.

most of let the snakes crinkle their heads to death by felt, instrumental b by my bloody valentine, on your own again by scott walker, fearless vampire killers by bad brains. by songs i suppose you dont mean instrumentals...

The Lucksmiths' "Birthday Present for Katrina." It's good fun.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 23 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Everything on the "Miniatures" comp - that it's concept. There's also a Residents album that does the same. Slightly more interesting would be Moby Grape's marvellous "Naked, If I Want To".

philT, Saturday, 23 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

guided by voices; awful bliss

pretty sure some heavy vegetable and thingy stuff is less then a minit too.

and Serge Regiani; ce n'est pas moi qui chante (his only decent track b.t.w.)

Douglas wrote: Quentin Crisp, "Stop The Music For A Minute."

Ending the tape with this track is KEY! Most of mine do, you know, and they don't even have a one-minute theme.

'Field Day For The Sundays' - Wire; 'ST 100/6' - Big Star.

Andrew L, Sunday, 24 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Others from Pink Flag: "Brazil", "It's So Obvious", "The Commercial", "Straight Line" & "Different to Me".
HollAnd, "On Cassette"
Dymaxion, "Gebrauchmusik"
Mars' "Puerto Rican Ghost" from No New York is exactly 1:00
Most of the 99 tracks on Lull's Moments are under 1:00

Curt, Sunday, 24 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"She Can Only Say No" by the Undertones "TV Stars" by the Skids (the one with the chorus 'Albert Tatlock !')

And can I stretch the boundaries to eighty seconds please, just so that you can include two perfect pop symphonies: McCarthy's "Charles Windsor" and best of all, Primal Scream's "Velocity Girl" of course. (both of which were covered by the Manics, I think).

Darren, Sunday, 24 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Perfect Love, Moisture, The Act of Being Polite all by The Residents from The Commercial Album (and there are about another 37 of them there, all under 1 minute). -jeff

My Locust CD fits 20 songs into 16 minutes.

sundar subramanian, Sunday, 24 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Urinals used to do a few short songs - "Ack Ack Ack" was one though I don't actually know if it was that short.

Some other ideas

N., Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Claudia (Part III)", Die Ärzte.

Colin Meeder, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Correction: It's actually Part 95.

Colin Meeder, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

many of the "phils" from the first black dog album .. (bytes) come in at a minute or so. or some music from http://www.floppyswop.co.uk

jk, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Is classical music "allowed"? If so, Satie's got a bunch of candidates -- two of the best of which are "Son binocle" and "Ses jambes", numbers 2 and 3 from Les Trois Valses distinguées du précieux dégouté. One's slow and beautiful, the other kinetic and full of unexpected harmonies.

Lots of Conet Project tracks are under a minute. There are also a couple Little Marcy songs that clock in under a minute -- "It's Bubbling" comes to mind.

Also Datacide's "Ondas" (six seconds or so!), and the American Analog Set's "Dr. Pepper". The "Entrance" and "Exit" of "The Grand Vizier's Garden Party" from Pink Floyd's Ummagumma. The Beastie Boys' "Tough Guy". "Ping Pong With Hong Kong King Kong (A Sing Song)" by Momus. And a bunch of tracks off Atom Heart's Masters of Psychedelic Ambience - Mu, including the opener.

Phil, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Rocket From The Crypt's "Middle" clocks in under a minute. I must have kajillions of records that have weird 30 second interludes that aren't very interesting.

Violent Femmes, "Old Mother Reagan"

Prude, Sunday, 28 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Lifter Puller, "Plymouth Rock." So, so great. Tried writing about it tonight and it completely ruined everything else I was trying to do with the piece I was writing. Holy Christ but I love Lifter Puller.

John Darnielle, Sunday, 28 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

John's love of Lifter Puller makes me so happy. They were one of the best bands I've ever seen live, so good that the next day I ordered all of their recorded output (well, all I could get my hands on) and treasured it until my (ex)roommate stole it. Grr. I was very distraught when they broke up.

Anyway, um, minute songs...

adam, Sunday, 28 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

PhilT: Weirdly enough, the Residents did have a track on the Minitures comp.

Christine "Green Leafy Dragon" Indigo, Sunday, 28 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ramones - Warthog
Red Hot Chillipeppers - You Always Sing the Same
Beatles - Her Majesty's a Pretty Nice Girl (or whatever - end of Abbey Road)
Big Boys - Brick Wall

I'll bet you don't own everything that's been suggested. Maybe everyone should post MP3s of whatever they suggest - 100 of 'em from all over the place...
