The perfect listener has no familiarity with music and no cultural or personal experiences of any kind to prejudice him/her in any way with regard to anything he/she might hear. The perfect listener has a perfect but completely untrained musical ear. The perfect listener is fluent in all languages but at home in none.

Given that that's impossible, the perfect listener is someone who really, really likes your material and would like to get to know you better. Maybe later? Over drinks?

Nothing wrong with prejudice, Nap. But it is a little bit prejudicial, doncha know...

The qualities that might allow one to listen to Enya with delight are different from the qualities that might allow one to love and pay proper respect to Whitehouse. Or the Gravediggaz. Or Benjamin Britten. Or Liberace. Or Ricardo Villalobos. Or Zakk Wylde's Black Label Society. Or Andrew Lloyd Webber Soundtracks. Or Shirley Temple. Or Jandek.

All have appealing qualities. But there are VERY few people on this earth that would be able to listen to all of the above openly, and judge each soley according to its own merits and ambitions. People's tastes close them off to things that they find distasteful.
