Help me plan my festival viewing (or berate me for my ignorance of these bands)

Myself and Mrs C are taking in the Frequency Festival in Salzburg as part of our holiday this year. Which of these bands should we be seeing and which should we run screaming from?

Morningwood
Blumfeld
Kaizers Orchestra
Mando Diao
Cursive
Coheed & Cambria
3 Feet Smaller
Wir Sind Helden
Calexico
Paolo Nutini
The Paddingtons
Mohair

Morningwood are fantastic. Mando Diao are passable. Paolo Nuttini is absolutely fucking abysmal.

I've never seen Calexico, but I hear they are very good live...Coheed & Cambria scare me, they seem like a combo of the worst excesses of Rush, Yes and Mars Volta...

I really liked Blumfeld around 7-8 years ago. Didn't know they were still going

Wir Sind Helden are Deutsche indie popster, caught them on MTV in Germany, really like them in a guiltless indie pop way.
D/L: Nur Ein Wort

The song 'Kill A Fashion Killer' by The Paddingtons is one of the most extraordinarily awful, inept things I've ever heard from a band with an alleged national profile. So they might be funny to watch

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 21:33 (nineteen years ago)

I couldn't find that song, but I did listen to the stuff on their website and have no problem in believing you on that score.

I've been having a listen to some of the others and am liking Calexico and Morningwood, whilst Coheed and Cambria are quite staggeringly scarily bad. Thanks to everyone so far!

Indeed - I was just listing the bands I didn't know (and that I didn't think were pretty unknown outside Continental Europe)

Ha, I've just noticed Morningwood and the Paddingtons play at the same time, so that's one easy decision.

Other clashes for your consideration;

The Prodigy vs Belle And Sebastian
Editors vs Art Brut
Cursive vs We Are Scientists
Morrissey vs Soulwax
Nada Surf vs LostProphets
Futureheads vs Eagles Of Death Metal

Si.C@rter (SiC@rter), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 21:55 (nineteen years ago)

calexico's the one to see of that list. better live than on record.

jergins (jergins), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 21:55 (nineteen years ago)

Prodigy, Art Brut, bathroom break, Mirrissey, Nada Surf, toss-up.

Calexico are great, seconded. I've been spinning their latest disc in the past couple weeks. They're a kind of alt-Americana-ish, indie rock group. Think: Iron and Wine (but more rockin'), My Morning Jacket, etc.

I figured someone else would have warned you, but since nobody has: run from Cursive. Really bland emo-rock. For a while they tried to add an organ player to get a slightly more interesting sound, but ended up dropping that, so now they're back to another boring 4 piece rock group with a terrible singer and lyrics that a 15 year old should be embarrassed by, and the 30+ year old singing it utterly ashamed.

Although, as I implied, WAS is not really a viable alternative either. Seriously, go have sex in a portapotty or something.

Eppy (Eppy), Thursday, 3 August 2006 02:11 (nineteen years ago)

Wir Sind Helden are good pretty much only for the cuteness of the singer. The first album is an awful pixies derivative (does that make it doubly awful?). The current songs are much better but still pretty much MTV fodder. (I don't think it would be fair to use the word "indie" to describe them at all.) "Nur Ein Wort" is catchy, but the video is a stupid Dylan homage.

They would be near the top of the least-offensive cropping of your list. And again, the lead singer is pretty cute, especially when holding a guitar.
